Reviews

"It's beautifully shot, tremendously acted (by Quaid and Efron) and honestly, very affecting."
Telluride 2012: Ramin Bahrani's Extraordinary, Affecting 'At Any Price' | FirstShowing.net

"Zac Efron’s brooding good looks work well for the role of Dean, and the moments when he and Dennis Quaid are together the film really comes to life."
At Any Price | Review | Screen

"Bahrani has improbably secured the services of matinee dreamboat Efron, who looks more like a studio raffle prize circa 1957 with each passing film."
Review: Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron defeat the dream in smart, muscular At Any Price

"The two leads are in fine form here... the callow streak that Efron has often displayed as an actor has never felt as raw, vital and emotionally explosive as it does here."
Variety Reviews - At Any Price - Film Reviews - - Review by Justin Chang

"Efron does equally strong work. Continuing to distance himself from his origins as a pretty-boy teen idol, he brings an intense, brooding stillness to the screen here, simmering with the frustrations of small-town entrapment."
At Any Price: Venice Review - The Hollywood Reporter

Potential Titles

This is a brave, layered film that challenges the wisdom of victory at any price.

From Flaunt:
  • I wasn't watching Zac Efron play Dean Whipple, rebellious would-be NASCAR driver in Iowa; I was watching me as Dean Whipple played by Zac Efron.

You'll soon learn that around here there is no such thing as warming up, we like to get straight into the good stuff

I really do think that Dean and Cadence could have been happy if only Dean had been happier with himself.

I agree, you got the sense that Dean actually liked Cadence as a person, but when his "dream" on the racetrack collapsed, being angry / frustrated he ends up verbally lashing out against the one person he knew loved him totally and who had always been in his corner and then like ramming the final nail in the coffin of what he and Cadence had together, he goes and has nothing more than drunken angry sex with the Heather Graham character .... silly boy

I can understand the anger and frustration at his dream slipping away from him but he could have definitely dealt with it in a better way, but that scene was hot

Don't get me wrong i'm not condoning his petulant behavior when things didn't go according to plan or for taking out his frustrations on those that didn't deserve it, BUT .... I still think it had a lot to do with his fathers obvious favouritism towards his big brother, and the fact that Grant never seemed to have failed at anything and then when Dean found something that HE alone was actually really good at and was heading for his own personal victory, he failed at the most crucial moment and i think it emotionally crushed him that much that all sense or feeling went out the window ..... well that's my amateur shrink take on it .... of course if I could just get Dean on the coach and get him to open up maybe .....
