Sunset Strip Television & Film Collective

Sunset Strip Television & Film Collective

Welcome to the Studio 60 Television and Film collective! The actors, writers, and directors of Studio 60 have had several projects before and since our beloved TV show. Their projects have been so varied and most of their careers so long it would be difficult to see everything everyone involved with the show ever worked on. That’s where the collective comes in. Have you seen a Matthew Perry movie that no one else has seen, or how about an episode of The West Wing that was particularly wryly written by Aaron Sorkin? Here is a place to come discuss the many projects of all our S60 alum and make recommendations and reviews to the rest of us Sixers who haven’t seen what you’ve seen. Better yet, if you have seen something another member of the collective has, how about putting in your two cents. We welcome healthy debate. Welcome to the Sunset Strip!

This is a great idea, Mandy. As soon as I get home for spring break I am going to bust out my West Wing DVDs. I'll be sure to stop by here and express my squees thoughts. Maybe I'll watch one that has Matt, Tim, and Bradley in it (*tries to think if such an episode exists*) Unfortunately, the Matt ones were post-Sorkin. Ooo. Plus, in the later ones, Kristin Chenoweth is in it, and that's like having Harriet in it.

Yes, Kristen very much counts. I think I'm going to write on Charlie Wilson's War...that's fresh in my mind. I'm gonna leave Serenity for Miss Avery. And I'd love to hear about TWW, I still haven't seen any of it.

Aw, how generous, lol. Who wants A Lot Like Love? And is there really such a person out there who has not seen Fools Rush In?

I think there is such a person, and doesn't matter to me. Multiple people can take multiple things as rebuttals and such.

Title: Charlie Wilson's War
TV or Movie: Movie
Episode (if applicable): N/A
Member of the S60 Family: Aaron Sorkin
Cast List/Who Else Is In It: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams
Release Date: 2007
Review or Rebuttal: Review

Charlie Wilson’s War is one of those rare films that you hear buzz about that kind of is worth the buzz you hear. Sure, it’s political, but then again what isn’t now a days and it doesn’t hit you over the head with anything you don’t already know. The movie establishes character roles from the beginning. The title character, a senator with high ideals but with low morals (the movie opens with him in a hot tub with a playmate of the year and other naked and suitably intoxicated women). During this romp he catches a glimpse of a news story relaying the problems of the Afghan people with the Soviet Union. This might seem like familiar territory, to anyone who watches the news and sees America policing the world. It’s as true now, as it was then, and that’s the point. The movie is pertinent. Charlie Wilson, a senator who has collected a lot of favors in his tenure, manages to increase the defensive aide budget to Afghanistan to try and outfit the country with weapons that could actually do some good for people who were trying to protect their homelands. Joined by married liberal heiress Joanne, and pudgy CIA agent Gust, Charlie Wilson manages to help aid the people of Afghanistan in policing their land and taking down military threats but when time comes for rebuilding the shambled country and providing more money to build schools he hits a wall.

Charlie Wilson’s War is ably helmed by veteran film director Mike Nichols (Closer/Working Girl) the movie moves at a brisk pace. That is perhaps due as much to Aaron Sorkin’s script which bops along with classic one liners, and witty banter that we all came to love by watching Studio 60. The cast is in top form, Tom Hank’s recovering flawlessly from the disastrous casting of him in The Da Vinci Code. Also wonderful is Julia Roberts vapid cheating Joanne who plays with her money as she does with Charlie’s heart. The best part of this film for me is Phillip Seymour Hoffman in his best supporting actor performance, and Sorkin’s script. Part of the reason Hoffman is so excellent is because he, like a lot of the S60 alum know exactly how to deliver lines with both sincerity and bite. See it.

Great review, Mandy. I put a link to that post in the first post, hope you don't mind.

And, btw, do all the reviews need to be so long or are the less knowledgeable of us allowed to skimp a little?

All up to you...skimp a little, skimp alot or format it completely differently. Nah, I think that's a great idea, linking the posts.

Psst...I opened a new game thread.
