I am. I caught up about a week ago but haven't had much time to post about it.

Yvonne was stellar in the finale. And I maybe in the minority but I sort of like seeing her go full out villain.

Very early in your career you left your home town, Sydney, to “take a few meetings” in Hollywood and immediately landed the lead role on network TV series Chuck. Was it as much of a fairytale as it sounds?

It was incredible and not something I expected at all. I’ve just kept going and, 10 years later, I’m still here. I never got to use my return ticket. I wish I still had it because that would be a pretty cool thing to frame and keep.

Then you starred in Dexter, 24: Live Another Day and The Astronaut Wives Club. Which one taught you the most?

Every project holds a special place in my heart in terms of what I’ve learnt from it. But watching Michael C. Hall work on Dexter was incredibly special and now in The Handmaid’s Tale I’m surrounded by insanely talented and inspiring people like Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes and Ann Dowd.

With its totalitarian state that oppresses women, The Handmaid’s Tale has been called “TV’s most chilling Trump-era series”. Did you think it would become so political?

We started shooting in 2016 and we were still shooting into Trump’s presidency when things started coming up in the headlines to do with women’s rights and then the Women’s March happened. That’s when the fascination began about the parallels between the show and what was going on in the real world. It seems to be speaking to people’s fears.

Your character, the infertile wife of a powerful man, is one of the great anti-feminist villains. Was it difficult to get into her headspace?

It was definitely hard to relate to her, being such an unpleasant, brutal type of villain. I had to strip away all the labels and get into what made her tick. Although she is in a position of power, she feels trapped and she’s lost a lot of her rights and identity. There’s a lot of rejection and suffering in her world.

You’ve worked with Robert De Niro (in Killer Elite) and Barbra Streisand (The Guilt Trip). Who surprised you the most?

I didn’t expect to have as much interaction with Barbra Streisand on set as I did. I’ve actually run into her a couple of times since and because my hair’s brown in the movie and I had a seven-months-pregnant belly, I thought there was no way she’d remember me. But she did and she was really lovely, so that was a nice surprise.

Your parents emigrated from Poland and you speak fluent Polish. Have you ever used it in a role? In an episode of Chuck I threw in a Polish sentence. It’s on my bucket list to do a Polish film or at least a role where I get to utilise that.

What were you like as a child? I was a lanky kid with bad skin and braces, and I was pretty goofy. I was always clowning around in front of a home video camera.

Do you make a special effort to keep your private life private? I think people make a lot of effort to make their private life public! I’m not really like that. My family’s my family and it’s sacred, and my friendships are sacred and my home’s sacred. My favourite thing to share on social media is nature stuff. I’m probably a bit boring on Instagram with all the sunsets and tree photos I post.

You once co-founded your own theatre company. Would you consider generating your own work again? Absolutely. Now that the platforms, especially in TV, have opened up so much and there are so many possibilities for content, a lot of people create their own stuff. That’s definitely on the cards for me at some point — when I have the time.
