Travis Fimmel Appreciation: From jock-strap to loin cloth... and it's not over yet!#1

Australian-born Travis Fimmel, best known for his striking Calvin Klein advertising campaign, makes his acting debut as the legendary Tarzan in The WB's Tarzan, a modern-day retelling of the classic adventure story. http://img7.photobucket.com/albums/v...jungle-new.jpg Quote:

Travis was born on July 15, 1979 to parents Chris (a cattle farmer) and Jennie (a nurse), and was raised on a dairy and beef farm about 40 miles outside of Echuca in Victoria. The youngest of three brothers, Fimmel worked on the family farm, milked cows, fished, hunted, camped and rode motorcycles on their land. After an injury forced him to quit the Australian Football League, Fimmel enrolled in the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology to study commercial architecture and engineering. After one year at school, he decided to join a friend on a trip to London with the intention of returning to finish school, but ended up traveling and living in Europe for two-and-a-half years. Growing restless, and with only a small amount of money, Fimmel headed to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of acting. Within a matter of days, modeling scouts discovered him and booked him for the now world-famous Calvin Klein campaign. Fimmel, still determined to make it as an actor, continued working with an acting coach and auditioning. Fimmel was tapped for the role of Tarzan after a worldwide search over four continents to find the perfect actor. http://img7.photobucket.com/albums/v...vis-candid.jpg In his own words: "It's hard to live up to those photos," he says. "It isn't all really me. Thank God for computer editing and special camera lenses and lighting." His ideal woman: "There is nothing better than an attractive woman who doesn't act attractive," Fimmel says. He also wants someone who likes to travel and doesn't take herself too seriously, and he has devised a test for his dream date: "Maybe I'd throw a piece of food at her in a restaurant to see what she'd do. I'd love it if she threw it back." For more info (and pics ) of Travis check out the following links... What Do You Crave? Where are all the Travis fans?? Still havn't found your way over here yet I guess. Well, that's mostly my fault really . I finally put together the general Tarzan thread on the Television board yesterday though so maybe that will help. It has links to all the Tarzan-related threads around FF and should make it much easier now to keep track of them. So to anyone reading this, make sure you stop by!
I actually just posted the following info there before realizing that it technically should have gone here. However, I wanted people to see it . * * * * * * * From the theotherjane from tarzantheseries.com Project Group Hug - Memory Book for Travis from his fans I'm gathering messages from fans to put together a scrapbook to send to Travis. I'll be compiling all the messages into a binder using vinyl sheet protectors and shipping the whole thing to Travis. If you want to be included, here's what you need to know. 1. Handwritten messages are preferred but if you really feel that your writing is that bad, typed is okay also. 2. Messages should be addressed to Travis. 3. These are personal messages to Travis, not campaign messages or messages to the cast, crew or producers of the show. 4. Anything rude, crude or vulgar (ex. offers of sex) will be excluded. Seems like something I shouldn't have to say but then again, if I didn't someone might try to get cute. 5. Pics of yourself and even postcards from your home town to go with your letter are totally cool. Fan art will also be accepted but it must be no larger than a standard sheet of paper. (yes Eden your son can certainly draw Travis a picture) 6. don't write on both sides of the paper. it tends to blend. 7. I'm also in the process of trying to do mix cds of songs and audio greetings. there will be more on this later if I can get it set up. 8. Because I am flat ass broke, all donations for supplies and postage will be accepted. I'm going to send the notebook via either fedex or UPS so I can track it and that's expensive. My paypal account is under my email jaynerives@comcast.net. Or you can tuck a buck into your letter if you want. 9. Deadline for submissions is Jan 3rd. If you are not in the US or Canada and you don't think you can get a message mailed to me by then, email me and we'll see what we can arrange. 10. Also, please don't ask Travis to call, write, email you. A contact channel is being set up should Travis want to respond. He's got a lot on his mind right now and being asked by dozens of folks to send a personal message is a bit much. 11. Submissions address. Jayne Rives 6721 Leland Way 22 Los Angeles, CA 90028 Feel free to send the link to this thread to any other forums, sites or email lists that you think might be interested. Thanks. Also, any other actor fan groups can feel free to 'borrow' this idea to send to others in the cast. * * * * * * * I know, you're saying wtf?? Jan. 3rd??!! But that's today!! Read on... * * * * * * * posted by theotherjane today I have posted a list of all the folks I have received messages from. so you can check to see if something you sent has arrived. the plan is to send the book on the 7th, but for sure by the end of the week. so there is still time to get stuff to me. even if you have to email it (I prefer that you write it by hand and send me a scan, for the personal touch). as you will all be able to see, I don't have that much for the book. I'd like to triple the entries if I can. * * * * * * * I think it's a really great idea, I'm actually pondering the idea of organizing one for Sarah. Anyway, I'm going to try and come up with something for this Travis book by the end of the day, anyone else interested? |

Anyway, I thought I'd start re-posting articles, pics, links, etc. that were on the old thread just in case people missed them the first time. And, with this cancellation news, I thought this one would be a good place to start ... Return of the Native By Linda Graham, "The Daily Herald") Airport onlookers witnessed an emotional reunion Saturday night as Aussie actor/model Travis Fimmel stepped off a plane and into the arms of his waiting family. It was the end of a long road for the former Calvin Klein poster boy, whose blonde locks, piercing gaze and exotic aura drew a frenzy of attention upon his arrival in America in 2001. Days after walking into an LA modelling agency barefoot and broke, Fimmel was signed by eager Calvin Klein execs to an exclusive year-long contract and a salary reportedly in the six-figure range. Soon his likeness could be seen plastered on buildings and staring out from the pages of every major fashion magazine. And the public raved. Women everywhere went mad for Fimmel’s tousled mane, chiseled physique, and the sex appeal he so artlessly combines with an air of boyish innocence. An eighteen-meter-high billboard featuring Fimmel clad only in his Calvins had to be removed after wreaking havoc with the traffic in London’s SoHo district. His meteoric rise to fame has left Fimmel, of humble dairy farming background, both amused and bemused. "I don’t think about it, mate," became his standard reply to comments on his position as fashion’s "It" boy. "I’m not a model or a star, just a regular bloke." Such self-effacing remarks, combined with a personality described as "sweet-natured and guileless" only served to fan the flames of media obsession. Try as he might to eschew the spotlight, the public couldn’t get enough of the honey-haired heartthrob. It wasn’t long before Hollywood came knocking. Soon the former farm boy from County Victoria was being courted by such A-list film stars as Meg Ryan and Renee Zellwegger, both of whom paid tidy sums to be seated next to Fimmel at runway shows. Incidents like these convinced Warner Brothers Television Network producer Jordan Levin that Fimmel was the Next Big Thing. In early 2002 the WB crime drama The Jungle, already in the works, was sent back to the drawing board, renamed Tarzan, and tailored to showcase Fimmel’s fledgling talent. Set in the gritty streets of New York, the show presented a modern retelling of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic Tarzan lore. Unfortunately the hour-long drama, although critically acclaimed, met with a tepid response from American viewers. Unable to draw an audience, the show has been scrapped after a mere eight episodes. Where does that leave Fimmel? Two weeks after WB executives halted production of Tarzan, the Aussie actor is back on native ground for a much needed hiatus. By all accounts, Fimmel’s role as the noble savage was a grueling one. "He worked eighteen to twenty hours a day, every day," relates crew member Barry Sorringer. "Stunt work, martial arts, he did it all. [He’d] leave here absolutely wiped." During his time off, family members say, Fimmel will divide his time between acting classes and helping out on the farm. Tarzan will not air in Australia, a fact which, according to Fimmel’s mother, came as a huge disappointment. "Growing up, he was such a little grub that we nicknamed him Tarzan," she says. "That’s why it was so amazing him getting this role. He put his heart and soul into it, and he was really looking forward to us seeing his show. Of course it doesn’t matter to us; we’ll always be proud of our boy." Still, the show’s cancellation came as a blow. "The worst part for Trav," continues his mum, "after working so hard, was having to call and tell us he’d lost his job. He really felt he’d let us down. Of course it doesn’t matter to us, but for him it was very disappointing." The love didn’t come just from family. At the airport, tears turned to smiles as hundreds of fans carrying homemade banners besieged the object of their affection with hugs, kisses, and words of encouragement. But it was a subdued Fimmel who, after lingering for over an hour to sign autographs and pose for pictures, declined to be interviewed for this article. "I’m here for a rest," was his sole comment as he left in the company of his family. "We haven’t seen the last of him," predicted a gushing fan, clutching a newly-autographed Calvin Klein spread. "Travis is going to be huge." We can only hope. * * * * * * * * * * * [ 01-08-2004: Message edited ~*Ambrosia*~ ] |

I hope he is as sweet as he seems, but one never knows without a personal encounter. HMMM...personal encounter. Brain stop that. Bad Brain. |
Now you've got me daydreaming of "personal encounters" with Trav! Shame on you! ..lol..

Anyway, here's yet another fave pic of John (one that probably wouldn't work for your art though) and a quote that I love... http://img7.photobucket.com/albums/v...o/john-roe.jpg From an interview with Mitch Pileggi: "We were at a party last night, and my 5-year-old daughter fell into the hot tub fully clothed. She was so embarrassed. Travis was sitting there. I grabbed her out of the water, and I held her because she was crying. She was embarrassed, nothing other than that. She just adores Travis, has the hugest crush. Travis was like, 'Sawyer, look,' and he jumped in the thing himself, just to say, 'Look, I fell in, too,' just to make her feel better. She stopped crying and started laughing. Then she wanted to get back in the hot tub with Travis." I hear ya kid ..lol.. [ 01-11-2004: Message edited ~*Ambrosia*~ ] |
It's so hard to find a picture that represents Travis well enough to translate through the drawing process. Like I said, of the ones I've drawn, they all look human, but they don't really look like Travis. I've gotten the eyes right, and the lips right, but that nose - I just can't quite get it. I've always been good at hair, so that's a big part taken care of, but it's frustrating. I need something fully lit, preferably showing both eyes, with a closed mouth smile. I know I'm being picky, but I've gone frame by frame on every episode, and only found 5 or 6 places that work for me. This is another reason I needed more episodes!!
Ambrosia - There's nothing wrong with thinking about encounters, other than the amount of brain power it consumes. How do you think I write about the characters the way I do? You have to let them into your brain.(PS - I just tried that first picture you left the link to, it almost did it. You could figure out who I drew, but those darn fingers. Still trying...) ATTENTION!! ATTENTION!! TRAVIS GOT HIS HAIR CUT!!
Er, yeah. Quote:
Is it just me or does he look kinda sad? And uncomfortable? And (although still very hot) kinda "Why are you taking my picture? I'm such a failure. Are you just going to make fun of me and my acting ability?" :: mentally send Travis lots of warm snugglies :: Ne-fehr-ious - Hmmm... what about this pic? Or check out the caps from WI and see if anything looks like it would work . Btw, yes I have received and read your lovely pm's and, again, I am soo incredibly sorry for not getting back to you yet . I've been sick this past week and, even though I've stopped in here a few times I just havn't felt like doing anything . I am really hoping though to get a chance to read the latest installments of your fic tomorrow :: crosses fingers ::. [ 01-29-2004: Message edited ~*Ambrosia*~ ] |
Could Travis possibly have had it cut for an upcoming project???

I like his haircut, but it does totally alter his image. I'm gonna keep trying to draw him. I've taken the lip touching picture and done some brightening, so I can see details now, and I'll give that one another go. Now the short hair...find more pictures, draw more. It so changes the look of his face - he looks a little older that way. At either length, I'd love to run my fingers through. I hope you like the continuations of the story. Since I didn't want to double post, I'm slipping back in here. Since Travis has cut his hair, the similarities may not be so obvious, but I'm here to add a picture of my "Travis substitute". I had to have someone to keep my mind going, and I found myself staring at this guy on daytime who is "Fimmel-esque". Does anyone else see it? http://www.geocities.com/daxgriffin_net/justincap2.jpg [ 02-04-2004: Message edited Ne-fehr-ious ] |

Anyone got an extra $200 dollars to spend? Yes? Well why not place a bid on the new Travis inspired doll? I'm sure any Barbies you may have hanging around would be very grateful ..lol.. Quote:
Ne-fehr-ious - Aww, that sucks when bad things happen all at once like that . I really hope this week will be much better for ya . As for me, yeah, I was sick for awhile with a "flu-ish" type thing and I still havn't quite gotten my energy level back up to normal. Oh and that guy from the soap-opera definitely does look "Fimmel-esque" but, I gotta admit, personally I find him a little "Neandrathal-esque" as well . Quote:

PS - the "fimmel-esque" guy looks much better in movement. That's the best picture I could find where he has the long hair - only screen caps, and they don't do him full justice, believe me. He fills in for moments of weakness where the next best thing is needed. [ 02-11-2004: Message edited Ne-fehr-ious ] |
Hi. I'm a newbie on this board, and I have some news about Travis. A ”Banner Fling” will be held on June 7th in NYC, to promote Travis. The city's major t.v. networks will be visited during the a.m. prime-time news shows. If you want to attend, please let us know by May 10th. If you're a member of many forums, forgive the multiple requests, but we want to include everyone. And, if you can’t make it, all of you creative people out there, we would love some of your ideas for banners. Thanks a bunch. Please contact wrightlibrarian@hotmail.com.
