From IMDB Location: Glasgow Scotland Born in Glasgow, Scotland to Margaret and Edward Butler, Gerard was raised (along with his older brother and sister) in his mother's hometown of Paisley, Scotland. He also spent some of his early youth in Canada. His parents divorced when he was a small child and he and his siblings were raised primarily by their mother Margaret who later remarried. He had no contact with his father Edward till years later when he was sixteen years old, after which time they became close. His father passed away when Gerard was in his early twenties . Butler went on to attend Glasgow University where he studied to be a Lawyer/Solicitor. He was even president of the schools law society thanks to his outgoing personality and great social skills. His acting career began when he was approached in a London coffee shop by actor Steven Berkoff (who later appeared alongside Butler in Attila), who gave him a stage role in the play "Coriolanus". He decided to give up law school for acting. He was later cast as Ewan McGregor's character Renton in the stage adaptation of the movie Trainspotting (1996). His debut movie role was as Billy Connolly's younger brother in the movie Mrs. Brown (1997). While filming the movie in Scotland, he was enjoying a picnic with his mother, near the River Tay, when they heard the shouts of a young boy who had been swimming with a friend who was in some trouble. Butler jumped in and consequently saved the young boy from drowning. He received a "Certificate of Bravery" from the Royal Humane Society. He felt he only did what anyone in the situation would have done. His movie career continued with small roles in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and Russell Mulcahy's Tale of the Mummy (1998). In 2000, Butler was cast in his breakthrough roles... the first being Attila the Hun in the USA movie Attila (2001/I) (TV). Producers of the mini-series wanted a known actor to play the part but kept coming back to Gerard Butler's screen tests and decided that he was their man. He had to lose the thick Scottish accent, but managed well. Around the time Attila was being filmed, casting was in progress for Wes Craven's new take on the Dracula legacy, also wanting a known name (so Butler wasn't much of a consideration). His unending tenacity and drive drove him to hounding the producers. Eventually, he sent them a clip of his portrayal of Attila. Evidently they liked it because Dracula 2000 (2000) was cast in the form of Gerard Butler. Producers of Attila (2001/I) (TV), thinking that his big screen role might help with the Attila ratings, managed to finish up a little early so that he could get to work on Dracula 2000 (2000). Attila (2001/I) (TV) ended up being the 2nd highest rated mini-series ever. Following these 2 roles, Butler developed quite a fan base and internet sites and lists started popping up everywhere. Since then Butler has appeared in Reign of Fire (2002) as Creedy and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) as Terry Sheridan alongside Angelina Jolie. Recently the role that has garnered him much attention from both moviegoers and movie makers was that of Andre Marek in the big screen adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel Timeline (2003). Butler played an archaeologist who was sent back in time with a team of students to rescue a colleague. He will next be appearing in the adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera, portaying the title character. Upcoming projects include The Game of Their Lives, Beowulf & Grendel and Burns. From IMDB 1. He's Scottish, but most of his family is Irish. 2. On the first day of shooting his film debut in Mrs. Brown (1997) he had to bound naked into a freezing sea and as a result contracted hypothermia. 3. While filming Mrs. Brown (1997), saved a young boy from drowning in the river Tay and recieved a "Certificate Of Bravery" from The Royal Humane Society. 4. Attended Glasgow University. 5. Did not see his father from the age of 2 until he turned 16. 6. His eyes are grey/green in color but often appear blue on screen. 7. Rumored to be the next James Bond (after Pierce Brosnan). [April 2001] 8. Was confirmed for a role in Mindhunters (2004), but chose to drop out of it because of his prior commitment to Timeline (2003). The filming schedules of the two films overlapped. Jonny Lee Miller with whom Butler co-starred in )Dracula 2000 (2000)_ stepped in to take his Mindhunter role. 9. Was a presenter at the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards with fellow Scotsman Billy Boyd. 10. Was at one time the lead singer for a Scottish rock band named Speed, although music eventually became his second love after acting. 11. Has done 5 films in which his character's name is in the title: Dracula 2000, Attila, The Phantom of the Opera, Beowulf & Grendel and Burns. 12. Cried whilst talking about the Phantom's lonliness to Joel Schumacher. 13. Had the "rock and roll" voice that Andrew Lloyd Webber always wanted to play the Phantom. 14. Jokes about preferring the mask side of his face to the regular side of his face. 15. Sung in a rock band whilst training to be a lawyer. 16. But no, playing bad is fun. Being bad is fun as well, I'd just thought I'd point that out." "And this is one we rehearsed early. No, but.... I did an interview once and it was the 1000th time I think I'd been asked if I was going to be Bond. And I said, "Yeah, I'm in talks with Barbara [Brokley?] and if Anne [Whitumker?], Anne [Whitumker?].... is a, like a 80 year old, fat, balding, politician, female, I said if she can be my Bond girl, I'll do it. [] And then I said, no, the rumors are very flattering, but they're not true. And the next day it was in the Scottish press, it was "Gerard Butler is the next James Bond. He admitted it himself in a television interview yesterday. They don't realize...Then all these magazines picked it up, and started saying that I was walking about saying that I was the next James Bond. I wasn't, really. I'm not. [wink]" "Because I’m a fool. I read seven pages and it was a family moving house, a boy who was deaf who was going to buy fish n’chips and I thought ‘what is this?’ and threw it away. And then my friend, who is the casting director who I knew before either of us were in the business—he’s from Glasgow—he called me up and he’s like ‘Gerry, this is an award-winning movie man, you got to do this.’ So, he said ‘just do me a favor, just read the script.’ So I did, and for all the reasons that I threw it away, are all the things that are so charming about this movie. It sucks you in. There’s a reality and a naturalness to it. And then you get sucked in to this beautiful, moving little fairy tale which constantly surprises you and makes you think and…I’m just so glad that I went back and read it. I’ve never been more proud of a movie." "Uhm, no! Ah … actually, (Ellen: (voice over) “Oh!”) I’m … I’m from Long Beach, California. (*clamorous applause and animated screams of excitement from the audience*). (*Now speaking to the audience*) I’ve been pretending the whole time. And you guys all fell for it, you … you know. I… I … (*Turns towards Ellen again*) No, I’m from Scotland. I’m from Glasgow, yeah.” "Okay, okay, let me explain. I was standing- This huge thunderstorm came in over Bondi Beach, and I was standing in this restaurant to the side. [I] went out to watch it, because literally the forked lightning was, was right in front of us. And there was a few people on the beach, and I was looking down going, "Why are they there?" And, literally, this- the biggest piece of forked lightning I have ever seen in my life strikes the beach, and I see somebody fall over. And two minutes- two minutes later, there's ten people there, then a vehicle comes out, then there's two ambulances, and then- and four police cars, and, and um- Yeah, and then the next day it was in the paper that somebody had been struck by lightning... But I think he’s all right now." "Em, because somebody told me. (laughs) No, I…I kind of…actually this was a very strange process in getting a part because from the first time I met Joel, Joel Schumacher the director, he basically said ‘what do you think of the script?’ And I had just read it the night before—and actually not really expected to love it—but I had, and I had read it whilst listening to the music at the same time, and it blew me away. And when I told Joel what I thought of it, he said ‘well that’s great, ‘cause I want you to play the Phantom.’ But I still had to go through the process of singing for ALW, taking a bunch of singing lessons, and then they essentially said ‘we’re going to give you the role, but we just can’t announce it yet.’ So I kept training, and it was a good month—five weeks—after that that I heard. So when I heard, it wasn’t a huge shock, because I’d always kind of known, y’know, and it would have been more of a shock if I’d found out that I didn’t get it." "I didn’t come on, I did not come on talking about how Scarlett spent ten minutes talking about toilet seats [audience laughs and claps] I kid you not. So he went, he went to Togoland, right - it’s going to get worse - he went to Togoland, he bought copper, and he got malaria, and he ended up in the hospital. And I was supposed to get injections and go down. Then his French-Canadian wife, I suppose, who was my step-mother, said, [in French accent] “Nobody weel make a fool of me, I am French, and I will go and show zeez peepuhl.” So she went down, and she was on the connecting flight in Paris. She fell, she fell down the stairs - [points at Scarlett] honestly - and she broke her ankle, she broke her ankle, and they took her on to Togoland, and she ended up in hospital with my father. And I had this penthouse in Toronto. And I have to say I felt bad, but I had the time of my life [audience laughs]" "He wants to present that very kind of powerful, sexy, but ominous feel, especially in the mask. We had so much discussion about the mask—the shape, the texture, the facial expression—which for me was my favorite part of the mask. To understand how that makes people feel, is part of what he does. There’s a reason he wears that and with that facial expression. It was also, it’s a great look. I preferred the masked side to my normal side." "Yeah. Well, that's, that's what touched me when I first read the script. You know, I just so felt this man's pain. I think if anything, the, the feeling you really get from this "Phantom" is very, I mean, it's obviously sexy, it's Joel Schumacher, but it's sexy and romantic, but I really felt it was melancholy. You know, just to suddenly, to have been in that position your whole life, to know and be aware that nobody wants anything to do with you, and you can't even have that companionship or that love with just one person. 'Cause really, he only wants it with one person. Just some form of connection. And whenever I touched that, it just broke my heart. And then when you add this music, you know, this sweeping music, which really helps you climb into that emotion, you just kind of abandon yourself to that. And it does, I think it touches something really primalesque (PH) and of an (inaudible) fear or sadness that lies within all of us. And I think maybe that's why it's been so popular around the world." "Well, the mask was a different thing y’know. When you stuck it to your face sometimes you’d have to rip it off it was so tight, y’know and I’d get a lot of bruising and (making puppy dog eyes at the peeps on the floor) I really suffered. But the prosthetic was 9 hours the first 3 times I did it, and they glued my eye with a piece of silk and a string that went down the back of my face and it pulled down your eye and spent hours attaching it and painting it and y’know it’s 3 people just sitting there (makes jabbing motion at his eye) it’s like torture you know, you can’t move and people just pokin’ your eye and so it kinda drove me crazy and again, by the time I walked onto the set I had to be crazy anyway. So I was like (in very gruff voice) ‘C’mon, let’s go!’" Gerard's Kilt - ThornyRose565 Gerard's Sword - Ladola Gerard's "Big Sword" - Ladola Gerard's Phantom Mask - Lindsey Mayer Gerard Butler - - Tina - 8. Mine are Angel of Music, The Mirror, POTO, MOTN, Masquerade (movie-version after Erik has entered) and Wandering Child. I like PONR but it´s just that I hate when she rips of his mask

I absolutely LOVE how he says "I am there inside" and "Have you forgotten your angel?" I also love "No One Would Listen", sad it wasn´t in the movie since I think it´s his best song. It makes you really understand Erik and his situation.
