Olivia de Havilland - One of the Few Remaining Leading Ladies from Hwood's Golden Age

I'm not sure this thread is going to get many, if any responses, but I thought I would try! This is the place to talk about Olivia de Havilland, the actress who starred in several memorable motion pictures during Hollywood's Golden Era. Her most famous role is probably as Melanie Hamilton in "Gone with the Wind", and she is the last remaining principal cast member of this film (Leslie Howard, Clark Gable, and Vivien Leigh sadly past on decades ago). This is ironic considering the faith of all four characters in the film!

She was born Olivia Mary de Havilland on July 1, 1916, and at the age of 92, is one of the last leading ladies from Hollywood's Golden Age. In addition to Leigh, Howard and Gable, she has worked with many stars from this era including Bette Davis, James Cagney, Lana Turner, Ronald Reagan, and Rita Hayworth. She dated James Stewart and Howard Hughes.

She starred in eight films with Australian swashbuckler Errol Flynn. The most famous of these would probably be Robin Hood and Captain Blood. Though there onscreen chemistry was electrifying, they never dated offscreen.

Her sister is actress Joan Fontaine. The two haven't spoken in decades.

Pictures of her with Errol Flynn:

From "The Charge of the Light Brigade"

From "Captain Blood" (this is one of my favourite films of all time and a must for de Havilland, Flynn, and de Havilland/Flynn fans!)

In "Gone with the Wind"

At the age of 86 at the 2003 Academy Awards

I agree ... one of the biggest actress of the golden age of Hollywood alive (with her sister ...). Such a waste they didn't talk to each other for so long a movie in which they could have been together should have been something great !
Her starring with Errol Flynn was very chemestrial (if I may say) one of the most believable couple on screen, and a very successful one !

That woudl have been really cool to see Joan and Olivia in a film together, but sadly sibling rivarly wouldn't have it.

She and Flynn had amazing chemistry together. I've seen most of there films together: Captain Blood, the Adventures of Robin Hood, The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Dodge City and Santa Fe Trail. I haven't seen They Died with There Boots on or Four's a Crowd, but I would love to!

They were a very believable couple on screen and I'm glad they had so much success so they could make several movies together!

I love Captain Blood! What a fantastic movie! I really want to see "Four's A Crowd". I hope it's released on DVD one of these days. Does she and Flynn play a couple in that film?

Have you seen "Gone with the Wind"? In the four disc special release she talks about being cast as Melanie, Clark Gable, the firing of first director George Cukor, and other things. It's really interesting!

It was playing in the threatre four years ago? was this a re-release? I would love to see it in the theatre! It's a great movie!

I would recommend watching "Melanie Remembers", its really awesome to see Olivia talking about the movie. It's a shame none of the other principal cast members are around to talk about it, though Leslie Howard and Clark Gable would be over 100 if they were still around!

Have you seen "The Heiress" or "To Each There Own"? She won Best Actress Oscars for both those films!

According to wikipedia, she is going to be in a movie being released in 2009 called "I-59 South". If she is going to be in it, it will be her first film since 1979!

Yay other Olivia fans! I feel like not enough people know about her - she really is a living legend. One of the last "Golden Age of Hollywood" people left, and she is the last remaining principle cast member of Gone With the Wind - a movie that will turn 70 next year!

I love her chemistry with Flynn to! Have you seen all her films with him? I haven't sen "They Died with There Boots On" or "Four's a Crowd" I have seen the others though and my favourite one so far is "Captain Blood"! I love Errol Flynn as well!

She did have a crush on him: from wikipedia

Quote:
De Havilland and Errol Flynn were known as one of Hollywood's most exciting on-screen couples, appearing in eight films together, but never had a romantic life off-screen. In an interview with Gregory Speck, de Havilland stated, "He never guessed I had a crush on him. And it didn't get better either. In fact, I read in something that he wrote that he was in love with me when we made The Charge of the Light Brigade the next year, in 1936. I was amazed to read that, for it never occurred to me that he was smitten with me, too, even though we did all those pictures together."
Thank you for the pic skanwabbit!
