Thanks for the new thread And loving the banner Gah, less than a week to go yet. I'm surprised I've had the patience

And ok. I just can't seem to remember if this was posted or not. So I apologize if it's a double.

From Zap2It:

Summer Smash 'The O.C.' Returns

By John Crook

Surf's up, but winsome Marissa Cooper's spirits are still way down as "The O.C." returns to the FOX lineup in a new Wednesday time period starting Oct. 29.
As the show's addicted fans will clearly remember, the last episode ended on a dire note for Marissa (Mischa Barton) when "The O.C." took a short hiatus for baseball playoffs.

Devastated by the news that her parents (Tate Donovan, Melinda Clarke) are getting a divorce and heartbroken by her boyfriend Luke's (Chris Carmack) dalliance with another girl, Marissa found herself in a low-class Mexican gin joint where she knocked back a fistful of painkillers and washed them down with tequila. At the final fade-out, love-struck Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) was carrying her limp form from a filthy alley where she had collapsed.

Needless to say, some of the show's more diehard fans have been on the edge of their seats awaiting future developments, Barton says.

"Some of them have told me they were upset that the show was off for awhile and would ask me to tell them what was going to happen to my character," she says. "Clearly people already have gotten very attached to these characters, and I don't think that happens very often.

"I have people coming up to me daily now telling me how much they love the show and how invested they are in the characters now."

That level of celebrity is a little dizzying to the 17-year-old Barton, although she has been acting since she was discovered by an agent at summer camp when she was 8. It's just that most of her work has been in prestigious and critically acclaimed indie films and plays that a mass audience never saw. In fact, prior to "The O.C.," perhaps her most widely known work was as the young poisoning victim whose ghost threw up on little Haley Joel Osment in the box-office smash "The Sixth Sense."

"A lot of people remember that scene," Barton laughs. "Most of my career has been spent doing work that I was very proud of, even if it hasn't been seen by that many people. If nothing else, those jobs were a great experience for me.

"What is wonderful about 'The O.C.' is that it has both good writing and good acting and it also is being embraced on such a wide level by audiences. I am very ... proud to be a part of it. And it has been great to get that positive feedback so quickly. You know, when you do a film, you have to wait for months to see how it will be received."

Born in London, Barton moved to New York with her parents when she was four. Shortly after that fateful summer camp encounter with an agent, at age 9 she landed a leading role in "Slavs!" a play by Tony Kushner ("Angels in America"). Additional work followed at Lincoln Center and the New York Shakespeare Festival, among other venues, and she also spent three seasons as Lily Benton Montgomery on the ABC soap "All My Children."

Barton made her feature film debut in 1998 with the well-received Sundance Film Festival favorite "Lawn Dogs," in which she starred with another rising actor, Sam Rockwell ("Matchstick Men"). The small but loyal audience of ABC's "Once and Again" also remember Barton for her acute and very poignant portrayal of Katie Singer, the lesbian cousin of Jessie Sammler (Evan Rachel Wood, "Thirteen").

Despite the gratifying response Barton received for the latter TV gig, the actress concedes that just a few years ago she planned to give the medium a wide berth.

"For a few years I noticed that doing television was kind of frowned upon among the actors I was working with, especially in theater, because there was a sense that the quality was lacking and the overall level of work was just not very high," she says, "but the bar has really been raised in the past couple of years.

"When you have producers like Doug Liman, who directed our pilot, and McG, you get a show that is just really well crafted. They were very careful in how they cast our show, and I think it shows in the ensemble I am working with. This is just an incredible group of actors. But, of course, that means that we all have to stay on our toes with one another, because there is no room for slacking off."

While Barton's cosmopolitan, theater-trained roots might seem an odd fit to play a California golden girl like Marissa, the actress says she intuitively understands most facets of her TV character.

"It's interesting, but in many ways Marissa's personality is a lot like my own," she explains. "She's mature for her age and pretty together on a level beyond her years. I'm not from Marissa's world, but certainly I have traveled a bit and been to California before, so I can understand her on a lot of levels.

"I've had a very different upbringing in that I have had the opportunity to see a lot of different places and get a sense of what they are like. What's cool about Marissa is that she is aware of the larger world outside the O.C. and she wants to get outside of her neighborhood. As the show goes on, you'll see Marissa wanting to know more and more about this world Ryan comes from."

The show made its initial splash against a late-summer lineup of reruns and generally second-rate reality programming, but Barton says she isn't wasting any energy worrying whether the show can hold its own against more formidable competition.

"Frankly, I got the impression the network didn't originally expect us to do nearly as well as we have done," she says, "but something incredible happened with us: We started good and got better week after week in terms of our audience. I think and I hope that after a few weeks off, people will still be interested in watching us, but all I can do is stay focused on the quality of the work and let other people worry about ratings."

Hmm, if they were at the World Series, they must be in NYC for press junket's. I guess that TRL appearance is pretty soon then
