Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer

Kylie diagnosed with cancer, tour postponed

16:00 AEST Tue May 17 2005

AAP
Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and has postponed her Australian tour.

"Whilst at home in Melbourne with her family this week, prior to her Australian Showgirl Tour, Kylie was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer," Ms Minogue's publicist said in a statement released a short time ago.

"She will undergo immediate treatment and consequently her Australian tour will not be able to proceed as planned."

Ms Minogue said she was sorry to disappoint her fans.

“I was so looking forward to bringing the Showgirl Tour to Australian audiences," the 36-year-old said.

"Nevertheless hopefully all will work out fine and I’ll be back with you all again soon.”

Kylie’s Showgirl Tour was scheduled to tour Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth over the next month. Fans have been advised to hold onto their tickets pending the announcement of new Showgirl dates.

I was shocked when I heard about this. I've been a Kylie fan since her first songs of "Lucky". Best of luck Kyle!

I was so sad to hear this. I wish her all the best. So sweet that she was worried about cancelling the tour for her fans - I'm sure she knows we're all wishing her the best

I was lying in bed and I had my TV on and when it was announced on the news I was quite shocked.

I wish her all the best of luck, maybe she ought to get in touch with Anastacia.

Kylie's very much in my thoughts at the moment. Thank goodness she caught it in the early stages. I imagine that, together with her family, friends, fans and great attitude, will make a world of difference to her recovery. I wish her the very best of luck. She can look forward to a wonderful reception once she's well enough to begin the Australian leg of the Showgirl tour! Until that time, I hope she takes all the time out she needs to put her health first and rest.

Kylie Minogue Early Diagnoses Positive
by Paul Cashmere
19 May 2005

An early diagnosis of Kylie Minogue's cancer treatment has returned some good results so far.

Doctor's have found that the cancer appears to be confined to Kylie's breast confirming that they have caught the disease in its early stages.

Kylie is undergoing treatment in a Melbourne hospital.

From hospital, Kylie issued a statement to fans saying "My heartfelt thanks to the incredible number of people who have sent messages of love and support over the last two days. I want to reassure you that I am being well taken care of. Olivier is by my side and I have a lot of family and friends around me. I would also like to extend my best wishes to all of the other women around Australia and around the world who are dealing with the same illness".

The singer has requested if fans who wish to send flowers or cards could instead make a small donation to the Cancer Council in her name.

A website has been set up to take your donations at www.cancervic.org.au/kylie

Kylie resting after surgery success

17:53 AEST Sat May 21 2005

Pop star Kylie Minogue is resting with family and friends around her after her breast cancer was successfully removed.

"I'm very pleased to be able to confirm that the operation was successful," her surgeon Dr Jenny Senior told reporters waiting outside the St Frances Xavier Cabrini Hospital in Melbourne.

"I feel confident that we caught the cancer in time and that she is now on the road to complete recovery.

"Kylie is currently resting after the operation and her spirits are high and she is feeling fine."

Dr Senior refused to say where the pop star was recovering from the surgery, which was performed at 5pm (AEST) on Friday after she was admitted to the hospital earlier that afternoon.

But on Saturday a silver Audi was seen speeding into the family's home in the Melbourne inner-eastern suburb of Canterbury.

The surgeon also would not comment on how long Minogue's recovery would take.

Dr Senior said that, despite Minogue's illness, the star had been a model patient, and had been thinking of her millions of fans around the world who had sent her their wishes.

"Kylie has been the perfect patient and has charmed all my staff. I just wish I could have met her under happier circumstances," Dr Senior said.

"Kylie has asked me to pass on her thanks once again to all who have expressed their love and concern for her.

"Your support has certainly helped her through a tough time."

Dr Senior said the medical procedure she performed was considered "best practice around the world for a girl with an early breast cancer".

She refused to take questions after her brief statement to reporters outside the hospital.

Dr Senior thanked the medical specialists who were part of Minogue's procedure, particularly workers in the hospital's radiology and pathology departments for helping her in her pre-operative assessment of the singer's condition.

"I'd also like to take a moment to thank the nursing staff for assisting me in caring for Kylie while she recovers," she said.

"I would also like to thank Kylie, her family, and (boyfriend) Olivier (Martinez) for making my job very easy. They were so welcoming."

The news from the surgeon is the first official word on the 36-year-old's condition since the singer released a statement on May 19 - two days after the diagnosis - thanking her fans for their support.

In that statement, Minogue said: "I want to reassure you that I am being well taken care of. My heartfelt thanks to the incredible number of people who have sent messages of love and support over the last two days. I would also like to extend my best wishes to all of the other women around Australia and around the world who are dealing with the same illness."

The news vacuum since May 19 - and the star's immense international profile - has prompted up to 25 journalists and photographers to keep vigil outside her family's Melbourne home.

But their presence has infuriated some, with calls for the press pack to be disbanded.

And on Friday night, a group of up to 14 masked youths pelted news cars with eggs and ice. No one was injured but some damage was caused to camera equipment.

The Frontier Touring Company has said it hopes to reschedule the Australian and Asian legs of Minogue's Showgirl tour, which were postponed upon the cancer diagnosis.

The announcement that Minogue had early stage breast cancer prompted a flood of donations to cancer organisations, with the Cancer Council reporting an $8,000 surge in funds from the public.

That's awesome news, huh
