the last film i saw with her in it was the mountains between us

an uneven role in an even more uneven movie

right now, shes in an age range where shes too old to play the characters she used to, and too young to play an older character (eg julia louis dreyfus, joelle carter, kim dickens)

I still haven't seen The Mountain Between Us.

Hollywood is so awful when it comes to things like a woman's age but I guess that's not only a hollywood problem. And then you have someone like Jennifer Lawrence playing characters much older than her.

she almost broke into that status of being one of the leading ladies in hollywood at one stage because of titanic, but it takes something else to be jennifer lawrence, amy adams or jessica chastain.

its hard because casting an actress at kate's stage is not all that exciting to watch in a movie, thats if they want to make them play a role which is related to that stage. the "usual role" a person at Kate's stage is "usually working" and/or "raising the children", its not very exciting to watch in a movie.
What usually makes people go to the movies is something like a rom com where 'the guy gets the girl' its predictable, but you know what? it sells.

and kate's too young to be an authority figure like judi dench

anyway, the more interesting roles for actresses at kate's stage tend to be on tv more, eg rhea seehorn plays a lawyer on better call saul is someone i can name.

I don't see why it wouldn't be exciting to see someone Kate's age in a movie. If anything that's on the producers. They are not creating movies that are exciting for women. Just looking at someone like Kate's costar Leo, who is the same age as her, he seems to not have this problem.

I don't see why it wouldn't be an interesting age for women in movie either I think at any age there are great female stories to be told!

Maybe she's done it on purpose? We don't know that so we can't judge why she's not as huge as some other stars... I think each artist has their own 'spotlight' moment.. they don't go on and on.. Even the biggest stars have projects that don't sell well..
