Jonathan Brandis Memorial and Appreciation Thread

I just read this:
Quote:
'Trembled' actor dies

Actor Jonathan Brandis, 27, who starred in the movie "The Year That Trembled," which was filmed in Ohio, was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment Wednesday. Brandis, 27, was found by friends and pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the Los Angeles coroner's office. There were no signs of violence. An autopsy was due to be performed yesterday, an investigator said. "The Year That Trembled," produced by Tyler Davidson and Scott Lax, who were living in the Cleveland area at the time, was filmed in Ohio and premiered at the Cleveland International Film Festival in 2002. Brandis played Casey Pedersen, a young man who is caught up in the turmoil of the Vietnam War. "It's a terrific tragedy, and our hearts go out to the family," said Davidson, who now lives in Los Angeles.
This is so sad. I used to love him when I was younger. There is speculation that he was taking medicine that has side effects including making one depressed and suicidal so his death might not have been intentional, but more or less a result of the drugs.

'seaQuest' Star Brandis Dies
(Thursday, November 20 11:27 AM)
By Daniel Fienberg

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Jonathan Brandis, who gained popularity as the young
adult star of "seaQuest DSV" and "Ladybugs," died last week at the age of 27.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's office confirms to Zap2it.com that Jonathan
Gregory Brandis died on Wednesday, Nov. 12. It was reported as a possible
suicide and while an autopsy has been completed, official information has been
deferred pending results of tests ordered at the time of examination.

Brandis was born in Danbury, Connecticut in 1976. He made appearances on "L.A.
Law," "Full House" and "Who's the Boss" before getting his big breaks with "The
NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter" and the telefilm "Stephen King's It."

"He was the kind of actor that I love to work with, a smart actor," recalls
"seaQuest" creator Rockne S. O'Bannon. "He was someone you could talk to. I
remember sitting with him and examining scenes. He understood the scenes from a
structural point of view. He wasn't coming at it just from an actor's point of
view, just a really bright guy." As Lucas Wolenczek on "seaQuest," Brandis
developed a large fan base and was a prominent figure in teen magazines. That
acclaim has spread onto the Internet, where word of the actor's death has
prompted a torrent of tributes from fans, even as the mainstream media has
failed to cover it. The Coroner's office has faced extensive public interest in
the case.

"I'm shocked," O'Bannon adds. "It's a shame."

One of the actor's last projects was the independent film "The Year that
Trembled," co-starring Fred Willard, Martin Mull and Henry Gibson. The film's
producers, Novel City Pictures, issued a statement regarding Brandis' death.

"We recently learned of the untimely death of Jonathan Brandis," the statement
reads. "We at Novel City Pictures are deeply saddened and stunned by this, and
like many people, we grieve for his loss. Jonathan was a great actor, and our
friend. We send our deepest sympathies to his family, his friends, and his
fans. We all miss him very much."

Other recent credits for Brandis included "Ride with the Devil" and "Hart's
War."
I was such a huge fan of his back in the seaQuest days, and had the biggest crush ever on the guy. I had a whole folder full of articles on him that I'd collected from mags. Wish I'd kept them now so I could go back and read through them again.

This is just so sad.

I agree. It just makes me angry. Angry and... well, I'm not sure what else. I mean, this man was my first celebrity crush! The sick thing is, I was hit with a SeaQuest craving just recently. Maybe my gut was trying to tell me something.

And, of course, at this time no Connecticut newspaper has reported his death. Wake up, people!

Sometimes my home state makes me so very angry.

I saw "Ladybugs" so many times I could pretty much recite the entire movie word for word, (sad but true) same with "Sidekicks".

I'm gonna hafta find all my old seaQuest tapes and watch them again.

He was only 27 years old.

Jonathan Brandis' Apparent Suicide

by Sarah Hall
Nov 21, 2003, 12:50 AM PT

Actor Jonathan Brandis, who began his television and film career as a child, died November 12, the victim of an apparent suicide. He was 27.

Brandis was best known for his portrayal of crewmember Lucas Wolenczek on two seasons of Steven Spielberg's underwater sci-fi series, SeaQuest DSV, for which he won a 1993 Young Artists Award, catapulting him to teen idol status.

The actor got his start at age six, when he landed a recurring role on the soap One Life to Live and appeared in numerous commercials. He moved to Los Angeles with his family at age nine, and made guest appearances on shows such as Murder She Wrote and Who's the Boss?

Brandis earned his first starring film role in 1990's The Neverending Story II: The Next Chapter. He went on to appear in 1992's Ladybugs with Rodney Dangerfield and more recently in the Farrelly Brother's Outside Providence in 1999.

Police said a friend of Brandis' called 911 from his apartment just before midnight on November 11 to report that the actor had attempted suicide by hanging. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital but he died the next day.

Paul Peterson, president of A Minor Consideration, an organization that deals with issues affecting child actors, released a statement expressing his sorrow over Brandis' death.

"We are left with a sense of helplessness and perhaps even anger that this thoroughly unexpected death occurred when we have spent years developing resources to deal with any and all crisis situations," Peterson's statement read. "This one hurts. What more can we say?"

The Los Angeles coroner's office performed an autopsy, but won't announce the cause of death until Brandis' blood and toxicology results are returned, which could take up to six weeks. However, according to Peterson, initial reports showed no sign of drugs in Brandis' system.

"Speculations as to the underlying cause of this tragedy are exactly that: speculations. It serves no purpose to leap to conclusions for none of us will really know what led Jonathan to his decision to take his life," Peterson stated.

Brandis reportedly left no suicide note. He was an only child, who is survived by his parents, Greg and Mary Brandis.

This makes me very sad. I was a big fan of his in my middle school days, too. Starting when he was in the teenybopper magazines for being in "It" and then "Neverending Story" (2?), and then I was so excited when he got his own show (SeaQuest). I watched that show solely for him.

And he was so young.

There's rumors floating around on other boards (I saw them on IMDB) that he might have hung himself. Whatever happened, it's very sad.

And it sounds like his friends were trying to help. I hope they're okay, or as okay as you could be under the circumstances.

This is very tragic news.

Well this is just really sad news. To take your own life at 27, when you've still got so much to do and see is just very tragic.

This was so shocking to read. I remember having tons of pictures up on my wall of him when I was younger. This is so sad! To possibly have taken his own life, and at 27! Wow...

I am seriously about to cry.
I haven't seen him in a movie for years. I only saw him in Sidekicks and then The Neverending Story 2. But I loved him then. God, I was only 6 then! I used to talk of marrying him and how my cousin and I shared him as our boyfriend.
And now he's gone.

I am completely in shock because I was a big fan of his when I was a teen. I am in tears about it. Just so sad he killed himself. Killing yourself is never the answer
