Keira Knightley #35- Because she's the Chanel Super Woman!

Keira Christina Knightley was born in the South London suburb of Richmond on March 26th 1985. She is the daughter of actor Will Knightley and actress turned playwright Sharman Macdonald. An older brother, Caleb, was born in 1979. Brought up immersed in the acting profession from both sides - writing and performing - it is little wonder that the young Keira asked for her own agent at the age of three. She was granted one at the age of six and performed in her first TV role as Little Girl in Royal Celebration, aged seven. It was discovered at an early age that Keira had severe difficulties in reading and writing. She was not officially dyslexic as she never sat the formal tests required of the British Dyslexia Association. Instead she worked incredibly hard, encouraged by her family, until the problem had been overcome by her early teens.

Her first multi-scene performance came in A Village Affair, an adaptation of the lesbian love story by Joanna Trollope. This was followed by small parts in British crime series The Bill, an exiled German princess in Treasure Seekers and a much more substantial role as the young Judith Dunbar in Giles Foster's adaptation of Rosamunde Pilcher's novel Coming Home, alongside 'Peter O' Toole' , Penelope Keith and Joanna Lumley. The first time Keira's name was mentioned around the world was when it was revealed (in a plot twist kept secret by director George Lucas) that she played Natalie Portman's decoy Padme to Portman's Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. It was several years before agreement was reached over which scenes featured Keira as the queen and which Natalie!

It was a chance encounter with producer Andy Harries at the London premiere of Bridget Jones's Diary which forced Keira to leave her studies and pursue acting full-time. The meeting lead to an audition for the role of Larisa Feodorovna Guishar - the classic heroine of Boris Pasternak' 's novel Doctor Zhivago, played famously in the David Lean movie by Julie Christie. This was to be a big-budget TV movie with a screenplay written by Andrew Davies. Keira won the part and the mini-series was filmed throughout the Spring of 2002 in Slovakia, co-starring Sam Neill and Hans Matheson as Yuri Zhivago. Keira rounded off 2002 with a few scenes in the first movie to be directed by Blackadder and Vicar of Dibley writer Richard Curtis. Called Love Actually, Keira was to play Juliet, a newlywed whose husband's Best Man is secretly besotted with her.

2005 started with the premiere of The Jacket at the Sundance Film Festival, with the US premiere in LA on February 28th. Much of the year was then spent in the CAribbean filming both sequels to Pirates Of The Caribbean. Keira's first major presenting role came in a late-night bed-in comedy clip show for Comic Relief with presenter Johnny Vaughan. In late July, promotions started for the September release of Pride & Prejudice, with British fans annoyed to learn that the US verion would end with a post-marriage kiss, but the European version would not. Nevertheless, when the movie opened in September on both sides of the Atlantic, Keira received her greatest praise thus far in her career, amid much talk of awards. It spent three weeks at No.1 in the UK box office. Domino opened well in October, overshadowed by the death of Domino Harvey earlier in the year. Keira received Variety's Personality Of The Year Award in November, topped the following month by her first Golden Globe nomination, for Pride & Prejudice. KeiraWeb.com exclusively announced that Keira would play Helene Joncour in an adaptation of Alessandro Baricco's novella Silk.

Pride & Prejudice garnered six BAFTA nominations for Pride & Prejudice in 2006, but not Best Actress for Keira, a fact which paled soon after by the announcement she had received her first Academy Award nomination, the third youngest Best Actress Oscar hopeful. A controversial nude Vanity Fair cover of Keira and Scarlett Johanssen kept the press busy up till the Oscars, with Reese Witherspoon taking home the gold man in the Best Actress category, although Keira's Vera Wang dress got more media attention. Keira spent early summer in Europe filming Silk opposite Michael Pitt, and the rest of the summer in the UK filming Atonement, in which she plays Cecilia Tallis, and promoting the new Pirates movie (her Ellen Degeneres interview becomes one of the year's Top 10 'viral downloads'). Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest breaks many box office records when it opens worldwide in July, becoming the third biggest movie ever by early September.

Into 2008 and Keira finally gets noticed by BAFTA, with a Best Actress nomination, although the Academy overlook her this time. She also gets a nom by the British Film Awards, Satellites, IFTAs, London Critics and Empire Awards. Atonement dominates many of the cast, crew and cosmetic categories at award announcements around the world. The film goes on to win the Best British Film BAFTA, while Keira wins Best Actress at the Elle Style Awards and Empires. The Edge Of Love opens well in June, bolstered by the rarity of two major female British leads.

Full Keira Biography

"I know for a fact the work is going to dry up, and people will get bored of me. That's not bitterness, just the truth."

"In this business, fame lasts for a second. You can be blown up and be blown down. People keep losing interest in faces because new ones come along every single second. I'm one at the moment. Tomorrow I won't be. That's cool. I'm not saying that when it does end, I'll be like, 'Yay! It's ending.' But I'll move on and do something else because that's what has to be done. It's about survival. If you're sad about it, then you're in the wrong job."

"Nudity frightens me, but I will do it when I think it's necessary - or when it makes me giggle."

"I don't read any magazines or newspapers any more, because I find it really scary and I get really scared when I'm followed by photographers. I have, on many occasions, broken down in tears because I find it terrifying. I dropped out of school when I was 16 so there's nothing else that I can do."

"I don't have a problem with my body. I'm not just going to strip off all my clothing, but if the part calls for it and I don't think there's any way round, I'm absolutely fine."

"I don't think I can call myself an actress yet. I just don't think my skill level is that high. I hope that with every job it gets better. But until I'm good, I can say I'm trying to be an actor, but I don't think I've completely made it."

So, turns out, Keira is very tech savvy, after all...

Quote:
Director Stephen Frears also pays tribute to the British producer of “Pride and Prejudice” and “Les Miserables."

ZURICH – Speaking via a message recorded on her smartphone's camera, Keira Knightley paid British producer Tim Bevan what, for British men, is the ultimate compliment.

“You are the one and only, the real Mr. Darcy” the Oscar-nominated actress told Bevan and the crowd at the Zurich Film Festival, where the Working Title topper was being honored with a lifetime career achievement award.
PHOTOS: The New A-List: 23 Salaries From Angelina Jolie to Robert Downey Jr. Revealed
Knightley compared the veteran producer, whose credits span some 100 films representing billions in worldwide gross, to the po-faced but ultimately loveable hero of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice. Bevan produced the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice that starred Knightley as Mr. Darcy's love interest Elizabeth Bennet.
“I remember when we, all the Bennet girls, were working on the film and we were all scared of you because you were so gruff,” Knightley recalled. “Then, one day we saw you giggle. From that moment on, we all fancied you because we realized, you are the real Mr. Darcy. So here's to the one and only, the real Mr. Darcy.”
Oscar-nominated director Stephen Frears (Philomena), who directed The Beautiful Laundrette (1985), Working Title's first-ever feature, presented Bevan with his career achievement honor, crediting him, and Working Title partner Eric Fellner, with reviving and transforming the British film industry.

“Tim is more powerful than anyone has ever been in the British film industry,” Frears said, adding that despite his incredible success, Bevan has continued to make mature, character-driven dramas such as Billy Elliot and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. “He hasn't lost his intelligence and all the other things I admire about him,” said Frears. The director will be teaming up again with Bevan and Working Title for his next film, a biopic on disgraced cycling champion Lance Armstrong.

Taking the stage, Bevan paid tribute to Fellner: “We could never have achieved apart what we have managed to achieve together” and to Working Title's studio backer, Universal. “They have given us huge creative freedom to make our movies ... so long as they make money,” Bevan quipped.
Reflecting on his astounding career, Bevan said that perhaps his and Working Title's main contribution was to “set up an network where British directors thought they had a home in Britain” and didn't have to go to Hollywood to make it big.
Working Title's string of success stories -- involving Brit directing talents such as Joe Wright, Tom Hooper, Edgar Wright and Richard Curtis -- gives credence to that claim. Bevan singled out Curtis for praise, saying the writer/director, who was key in many of Working Title's biggest films, from 4 Weddings and a Funeral to Love ... Actually and as a co-writer on the Bridget Jones franchise, had been more important to the development and success of the company than any other filmmaker.
Appropriately, then, the Zurich ceremony ended with a screening of Curtis' latest for Working Title, the Brit romantic comedy About Time.

Of the three in DM, Viggo, Micheal and Keira, I agree. It is K who I like the least.

Everyone has their opinions and I am not to judge. I don't get how much people 'gush' over P&P. Sure, I can watch it over and over.. but still... I like Matthew over Colin. I think I like P&P as much as I do because it was the first role post Pirates that I liked. I don't like Domino or King Arthur. It's also one of the rare 'happy ending' movies.

I'll chime in with my top 5 fave movies of Keira's...

1.) Pride & Predjudice
--Hands down this is my favorite of hers. I think it's the way the story was told and Keira (to me) just completely embodied Elizabeth Bennett. Plus, her & Matthew had a lot of chemistry & on screen heat that Colin & Jennifer (P&P'95) somehow lacked.

2.) Atonement
--This was probably one of the more "serious" themed movies she had done up to this point, I had seen, and she did a beautiful job with Cecilia. She just took on her pain beautifully.

3.) The Duchess
--Umm, her entire performance. LOL. What else can I say?!

4.) Pirates of The Caribbean (1,2 &3)
--I loved the way she showed Elizabeth's growth from the damsel in distress to fierce pirate lady. I think all the movies she did in between helped alot in this.

5.) Love Actually
-Brief as her storyline really was, I just enjoyed her performance as a girl just completely caught off guard by someone's unrequited love for her. And in a way, I could totally relate to her at the time.

My others are definitely, Last Night, Bend It & Princess of Thieves (the 1st film of hers I ever saw... )

which is just about the 'entire' movie.. I think there are only a few scenes is not in or the scene is not about her.

yes, I agree with you on that. I cry EVERY
time I watch it.

OT:
Keira gets the on up this weekend. Football result. James' Spurs lose to Keira's Hammers.

The Spurs had conceded only 3 goals so far in the season prior to the match w/ West Ham. The final score? WHU 3 THFC 0

I like that comparison.. but at least it had substance, and the characters were believable and they did not have to rely on EVERY CLICHE IN THE UNIVERSE.. not to mention breaking every code/tradition of how one is supposed to be to do it. Taking liberties because one is making a 2 hour movie and not a 4-6 hour mini series is one thing. Making dark, ominous, mysterious creatures of the night suddenly have no prob in the daylight sparkle is another thing.

I can also watch something and completely distance myself from it's original source. Blade Runner, for instance is a great film. If you compare it to the short story? It is rather horrid. London Boulevard, one of K's films. Compared to the book? would take too long to list ... but I liked both.

i have no probs with P&P2005 as a film for ppl of today who prefer to watch 2 ppl wanting to bone each other every 2 minutes
but if I want modern I'd rather watch Lost in Austen or Bride & Prejudice

woah CASSYL has an R rating
rather disappointed such cheerful & accessible film should be watched by everyone
They should have just cut out or softened the swearing part. was it very hard to do? ugh
'Muppets Most Wanted', 'Last Days on Mars' and 'Can a Song Save Your Life?' In Today's MPAA Ratings | Rope of Silicon
