THE AMAZING TERRY GILLIAM! His art, direction and the Python years.

Terry Gilliam. Best known as the animator of Monty Python, got himself a hankerin' for directing in the early 1970's that led to co-direction of "Monty Python and The Holy Grail" with fellow direction visionary Terry Jones.
Born in Minneapolis Minnesota, he is the eldest of 3 children. Fascinated with the birth and rise of Disneyland Terry was intrigued by the art of such movies as "Snow White" only influencing his already natural talent for drawing. A fan of Harvey Kurtzman and the other artists of MAD Magazine, which began in the 1950's, rounded out in a way his ideals of how he wanted to draw comics. Student Body President and head cheerleader in High School, set designer, Political Science Major and member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon in College in California. It was in College he got the hankerin' to make films but just didn't know how one would get there.
As it is, after an honorable discharge from the US Army Terry met John Cleese in New York and via connections ended up on the "Do Not Adjust Your Set" series with other not-yet Pythons Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Jones. Further into MP's Flying Circus, Terry began directing and writing films on the side.
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1975
- Jabberwocky 1977
- Time Bandits 1981 (co-writer Michael Palin)
- The Crimson Permanent Assurance (film short to MP's Meaning of Life) 1983
- Brazil 1985
- The Adventures of Baron Munchausen 1988
- The Fisher King 1991
- 12 Monkeys 1995
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 1998
- The Brothers Grimm 2005
- Tideland 2005
- The Imaginarium of Dr. Pamassus (speculated for 2009)

Some examples of his art work:

Anyway, I like discussing Terry's movies and great imagination and the wonderful perversion that makes it all work.

Thanks for starting the thread. I love Gilliam. I think he seems very laid back and cool. I love when the others in the Python gang does an impression of him. Michael is very good at it, I must say :-) And I love in "The Pythons" documentary when Graham is talking about him and that he says the word "bunch" alot, which means "that he's saying "alot"....alot" and one time whenj they where flying over Canada Gilliam looked out of the window and says "hey, you guys, a bunch of water" I love when Gram said that.

And you can tell when it's Gilliam who is laughing, he's got a laugh :-)

I'm gonna make some caps of him from that "Live at Aspen" thing tomorrow :-)

I love Terry Gilliams movies. I watched Tideland again the other day and right after I watched the documentary Getting Gilliam which is about Terry Gilliam as the director of Tideland. It is very good and I recommend it to you if you are a fan of Gilliam.

Behind the scenes of Tideland

I really love behind the scenes of movies photos and documentaries. I think Im obsessed with them. Especially where Python is concerned.

The 2 Terrys together again. Terry Gilliam and my love; Terry Jones.

Cool Ya Ya Is Getting Gilliam on youtube? I'd be very interested to watch it. I really like the pic of TG with the girl from Tideland. I love the imagination behind the theme of that movie. It is like a very traumatic result of a horrible upbringing. I have lived in that world so is very easy for me to identify with the psychological torture that can be so inflicted on such a young mind. As good as that movie is it is like a long nightmare much like Brazil is one long nightmare. Beautiful dream sequences in that one though

I totally agree April. I have been in my own personal Tideland on a few occasions, its quite surreal maybe its one of the reasons my mind is warped to create such things, anyway.
I did look for Getting Gilliam on youtube but it isnt there. TMN (The movie Network) is playing, Im gonna try and record it and if I can can get a hold of a DVD recorder I can record it for you, I think my mum wants to buy one.
I found this clip though:
YouTube - Terry Gilliam confuses a little girl

Here is a short lil animated movie by Terry called Storytime.
YouTube - Storytime (Gilliam, 1968)

Also I just noticed I am now a Part Time fan! YAY! Go me!! How do I put an icon in there.

I still have yet to see some of these films. I remember "The Fisher King" coming out. Isn't that the one with Robin Williams in it? Has anyone seen that yet?
