Oh dear gods, another place to fuel my unhealthy obsession... Yes, I'm totally having a phase here
I went through most of his imdb and so far I loved An Creátúr the most. If anyone's interested, the director put it up on YT. It's a short movie and it's in Irish (w/ English subtitles, so no worries ). I've found it creative and extremely moving; highly recommended! And I tumblred this last night - Robert in Love/Hate. Not sure if I liked it or not, though. He was excellent as always, but tbqh I think he was a tiny bit too young for that part. Plus the subject of violence and gangs in Dublin isn't really my cup of tea to begin with... |

Sure, add me away.
If you can stomach more disturbing subjects, I'd recommend Red Riding trilogy. Plenty of mindblowing performances all around (Andrew Garfield in 1974 part was sublime!). |

And before I write an essay on this thing, to get back on subject of Robert - he's in all 3 movies and his character plays an important part in what is happening, but he's the most featured in 1983. He basically plays a male prostitute and his character is just pure sadness and heartbreak. |

As inappropriate as it sounds in the context of the story, I truly enjoyed all 3 of them. It's very gritty and gruesome - admittedly I could barely handle watching police interrogation scenes and I'm not a squeamish person, but I think it's very much worth seeing. It's one of those cinematographic experiences where it just crawls under your skin and you can't shake it off. There were critics saying how it's too much a case of self-indulgence and "style over substance", but personally I thought that each image made sense in the context - distorted and shattered like the bits and pieces of story that we were given until we could see the big picture. And some people say that the conclusion wasn't dark enough, but tbh I never understood why some characters' survival was supposed to mean a happy ending. Just because they lived it's suddenly sunshine and rainbows? Considering their stories, there was never a chance for a happy ending, any way it would finish.
Anyway, yes, I liked it As for Robert's part in it - definitely not a main character He has a few scenes in each movie, but 1983 is where he really shines, IMO. There are pieces of his narration throughout that movie and he's got a closing monologue. Personally I thought that part was just a piece of stunning prose coupled with equally stunning imagery and for that alone the movie's worth your time. You can find the ending on YT, but it's much more powerful when you actually understand the meaning of his words in context of his character's story and the main plot. And the small parallels with earlier scenes of his (like him on the bus) and the flashbacks just break your heart. People who say he always plays Nathan-like characters clearly haven't seen this one. His drama performance in so raw in the best sens of this word. So to answer your question using fewer words (lol) there's not much of Robert, but don't let that stop you coz 1. when he's there, it's memorable and 2. you have a whole list of amazing performers all around (Andrew Garfield, David Morrisey, Sean Bean, Paddy Considine, Mark Addy, etc.) Apparently I don't know how to post short replies... Sorry! |
