| Audrey Hepburn Apreciation#1.B/C She had Sophistication and Class like no other. Audrey Hepburn. Art: Miss_Leonie ![]() Birth Name: Audrey Kathleen Hepburn-Ruston. Height: 5' 7" Hair: brown Eyes: brown Figure: 32-20-35 Nationality: British Date of birth: May 4, 1929 Birth Place: Brussels, Belgium Education: Arnhem Conservatory (ballet). Studied ballet with Sonia Gaskel and acting with Felix Aylmer Death Date: January 20, 1993 Place of Death: Tolochenaz, Switzerland Death Cause: Colon Cancer Breakfast at Tiffany's. lovely icons by Miss_Leonie . . . .![]() . . . .![]() . . . .![]() . . . .![]() With her big eyes, long neck, demure smile, melodious voice and perfect wardrobe, that aura of an angel on earth, she dazzled moviegoers for decades and in her later years also worked hard as a special ambassador for UNICEF. Despite her glamour, charm and elegance, Hepburn is one star who has always been seen to have real heart. Always modest, Audrey described herself as an actress that didn't have much technique because she never learned to act. Her own acting technique, such as it was, simply consisted of hard work, intense concentration - and instinct. She had the magic ability to bridge the gap between herself and her audience, and to make her innermost feelings instantly known and shared. Director Billy Wilder once said of Audrey: "She had not gone to acting schools, she didn't hear the word Strasberg, she did not repeat in front of the mirror. She just was born with this kind of quality and she made it look so unforced, so simple, so easy." Hepburn was incredibly charismatic. Wilder also said: "What is really needed in order to become a star is an extra element which god gives you or doesn't give you. You're born with it. You cannot learn it. God kissed on her cheek and there she was." "I am more than ever awed and overwhelmed by the monumental talents it was my great, great privilege to work for and with. There is therefore no way I can thank you for this beautiful award without thanking all of them, because it is they who helped and honed, triggered and taught, pushed and pulled, dressed and photographed - and with endless patience and kindness and gentleness, guided and nurtured a totally unknown, insecure, inexperienced, skinny broad into a marketable commodity. I am proud to have been in a business that gives pleasure, creates beauty, and awakens our conscience, arouses compassion, and perhaps most importantly, gives millions a respite from our so violent world. Thank you, Screen Actors Guild and friends, for this huge honor - and for giving me this unique opportunity to express my deepest gratitude and love to all of those who have given me a career that has brought me nothing but happiness." -This last quote was her last public statement, upon receiving the Screen Actors Guild Achievement Award in January, 1993. She was not able to present this speech in person, due to her failing health. Julia Roberts delivered this speech on her behalf at the awards presentation. Filmography. Although, some may think that 'Roman Holiday' was Audrey Hepburns first film, she did a number of smaller films before hitting the big screen, these include: Nederlands in Zeven Lessen (1948) One Wild Oat (1951) Laughter in Paradise (1951) Young Wives' Tale (1951) The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) Secret People (1952) Monte Carlo Baby (1952). Audrey's most famous roles. Roman Holiday (1953) Wyler's lushly romantic fable chronicles an oppressed Princess as she runs away to have a night on the town in Rome and falls in love with a cynical reporter, changing his life forever. Hepburn's amazing debut won her an Academy Award. Sabrina (1954) Hepburn, the daughter of a rich family's chauffeur, returns from Paris after a cookery course as a sophisticated woman and attracts the attention of the family's playboy son (Holden) and the older brother (Bogart). First meeting between two legends of fashion: Audrey and Hubert de Givenchy. War and Peace (1956) This screen adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's novel shows the effect of Russia's Napoleonic wars on three families. Funny Face (1957) Audrey is a shy, intellectual bookstore clerk who's swept away into the glamorous world of high couture by a fashion photographer (Astaire) and a chic magazine editor (Kay Thompson). Great Givenchy clothes. Love in the Afternoon (1957) The love between wealthy playboy and the innocent daughter of a private detective. This movie is a Billy Wilder's tribute to Lubitsch. Green Mansions A political refugee encounters Rima (Hepburn), a mysterious woman who is feared by natives as a forest spirit. The Nun's Story The life of a Belgian nun who serves as a nurse in the Belgian Congo and then has a crisis of faith. Hepburn is very impressive as a nun and this is one of her best roles. The Unforgiven Hepburn plays an indian girl adopted by Gish after her family was killed by whites. Raised as a white, the indians want her back after her true history is discovered. Breakfast at Tiffany's. Hepburn, in one of her most popular and acclaimed roles, plays a call girl who has a relationship with a writer (Peppard). Great adaptation of Truman Capote's novel. The Children's Hour Drama about school teachers accused of lesbianism by vicious student. Charade A young widow (Hepburn) receives protection from a stranger (Grant) and both try to find a quarter of million dollars hidden by her murdered husband. A great romantic comedy thriller with two elegant stars. Paris When It Sizzles A screenwriter writes a script with the help of his imaginative secretary and falls in love with her. My Fair Lady A Lerner and Loewe's adaptation of Shaw's Pygmalion with Harrison as the linguistics expert who bets he can turn cockney drudge (Hepburn) into a society lady. How To Steal A Million. Diverting bauble has Hepburn and O'Toole in Paris, mixed up in an art heist. Two for the Road An architect and his wife look back over their twelve years of marriage. Stylish, unique look at marriage, with great star performances. Wait Until Dark Hepburn is a blind housewife defending herself against drug traffickers. Based on a stage play (by Frederick Knott), the final climax is a classic. Robin and Marian A middle-aged Robin Hood (Connery) returns from the Crusades and finds that Marian (Hepburn) has become Abbess of a local priory. Bloodline. Snuff films and skullduggery in the pharmaceutical industry - a rare and insane combination - ensnare a fragile paleontologist in Givenchy designs. They All Laughed Four New York private detectives - each quirkier and hornier than the other - fall in love with the women they're assigned to follow. Always A contemporary love story, in which cocky pilot Pete Sandich (Richard Dreyfuss), a specialist in dousing forest fires from the air, is in love with sparky despatcher Dorinda Durston (Holly Hunter) who fears for his life; when he does in fact die - in the aftermath of which he meets and angel named Hap (Audrey Hepburn) - he returns in spirit form to guide a young pilot (Brad Johnson). Quotes by Audrey Hepburn. "It's that wonderful old-fashioned idea that others come first and you come second. This was the whole ethic by which I was brought up. Others matter more than you do, so 'don't fuss, dear; get on with it.'" "People associate me with a time when movies were pleasant, when women wore pretty dresses in films and you heard beautiful music. I always love it when people write me and and say 'I was having a rotten time, and I walked into a cinema and saw one of your movies, and it made such a difference.'" "For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone." “Your heart just breaks, that's all. But you can't judge, or point fingers. You just have to be lucky enough to find someone who appreciates you.” “The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.” "I was born with an enormous need for affection, and a terrible need to give it.” “Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it's at the end of your arm, as you get older, remember you have another hand: The first is to help yourself, the second is to help others.” “People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.” “You can always tell what kind of a person a man really thinks you are by the earrings he gives you” “My look is attainable. Women can look like Audrey Hepburn by flipping out their hair, buying the large sunglasses, and the little sleeveless dresses.” “If I get married, I want to be very married.” "Success is like reaching an important birthday and finding you're exactly the same.” “There are certain shades of limelight that can wreck a girl's complexion” “I never thought I'd land in pictures with a face like mine.” “I decided, very early on, just to accept life unconditionally; I never expected it to do anything special for me, yet I seemed to accomplish far more than I had ever hoped. Most of the time it just happened to me without my ever seeking it.” “Pick the day. Enjoy it - to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come... The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present - and I don't want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future.” "I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it's the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It's probably the most important thing in a person." "Whatever a man might do, whatever misery or heartache your children might give you - and they give you a lot - however much your parents irritate you - it doesn't matter because you love them." "As a child, I was taught that it was bad manners to bring attention to yourself, and to never, ever make a spectacle of yourself... All of which I've earned a living doing." "Many years ago, my mother said to me, 'Considering that you have no talent, it's really extraordinary where you've got.' She said it in the middle of all the lovely successes I was having. She wasn't putting me down. She was saying how fortunate I was." Quotes About Audrey. "Audrey was a lady with an elegance and charm that was unsurpassed, except by her love for underprivileged children all over the world. God has a most beautiful new angel now that will know just what to do in heaven" - Elizabeth Taylor "In a cruel and imperfect world, she was living proof that God could still create perfection." - Critic Rex Reed "'Moon River' was written for her. No one else had ever understood it so completely. There have been more than a thousand versions of 'Moon River', but hers is inquestionably the greatest." - Henry Mancini "In every movie I have ever watched, starting with Roman Holiday, I was in love with Audrey Hepburn. I played every part. I was Gregory Peck a long time ago! I was Bill Holden, I was Cary Grant, I was her biggest fan." - Ralph Lauren "Audrey definitely had a good heart, there was nothing mean or petty - it's a character thing. She had a good character, so I think people picked up on that too. She didn't have any of the backstabbing, grasping, petty, gossipy personalities that you see in this business. I liked her a lot; in fact, I loved Audrey. It was easy to love her." - Gregory Peck "A stick-slim actress with huge, limpid eyes and a heart-shaped face…. She sparkles and glows with the fire of a finely cut diamond" - Time Magazine "I can really take no credit for any talent that Audrey may have. If it's real talent, it's God-given. I might as well be proud of a blue sky, or the paintings in the Flemish exhibition at the Royal Academy." - her mother, Baroness Ella van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston "She has authentic charm. Most people simply have nice manners" - Director Alfred Lunt "It was my good luck, during that wonderful summer in Rome, to be the first of her screen fellows, to hold out my hand, and help her keep her balance as she did her spins and pirouettes. Those months [were] probably the happiest experience I ever had making movies." - Gregory Peck "Audrey makes my soul fly. She opens me up to beautiful feelings" - Director Stanley Donen - Gregory Peck: "There is no doubt that the princess did become a queen -- not only on the screen. One of the most loved, one of the most skillful, one of the most intelligent, one of the most sensitive, charming actresses - and friends, in my life - but also in the later stages of her life, the UNICEF ambassador to the children of the world. The generosity, sensitivity, the nobility of her service to the children of the world and the mothers of the world will never be forgotten." - Richard Dreyfuss: "She did the best that we could be; she was perfectly charming and perfectly loving. She was a dream. And she was the kind of dream that you remember when you wake up smiling." - Janis Blackschleger: "When you were with Audrey you felt prettier, better about yourself and your own possibilities." - Hubert de Givenchy: "There is not a woman alive who does not dream of looking like Audrey Hepburn." - Billy Wilder: "Audrey was known for something which has disappeared, and that is elegance, grace and manners . . . God kissed her on the cheek, and there she was." - Cynthia Rowley: "She was the first to make something that's not sexy, sexy." - Kevyn Aucoin: "Audrey had an angelic quality about her. She didn't act like she was better than everyone, she just had a presence, an energy, a sort of light coming from within her that was overwhelming." - The New York Times: "Thanks to their first glimpse of Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, half a generation of young females stopped stuffing their bras and teetering on stiletto heels." - Robert Wolders: "Once she sensed that she could trust somebody, she'd do anything for them. And if she were disappointed in them, it would be the end of the world for her." - Cynthia Rowley: "I would look at some of the other stars like Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe, and I would think -- there's just no way, I could never be like them. That was a man's idea of beauty, and Audrey was more like a woman's idea of beauty. It was something that was attainable, that I could identify with." - Isaac Mizrahi: "One got a sense that Audrey Hepburn didn't know how beautiful she was. There was never another movie star like her." - Janis Blackschleger: "She was always on time and ready to work. She knew her lines, in fact, her suggestions elevated the lines -- she could give lessons on celebrity behaviour." - Billy Wilder: "This girl, single-handedly, may make bosoms a thing of the past." - Sid Avery: "Audrey was so impish and yet so simply beautiful. A lot of the other celebrities depended on other things, physically -- on their breasts and their shape. She didn't make a big thing out of that, and for that reason, I thought she was wonderful. Because you didn't have to be conscious of the physique, you were only conscious of the persona." - unknown: "Audrey Hepburn looks like every girl and like no girl." - Kevyn Aucoin: "The lesson from Audrey is that she faced her life with as much optimism and courage as she could." - Julie Leifermann: "Having known Audrey, I have less tolerance for the star thing, and she was responsible for me having less tolerance -- if Audrey Hepburn can live on the road for three months, and be more talented than 99.9 percent of anybody on this planet, and come in and be on time and know her material and be delightful and professional and give you gold on camera -- when I come across the behaviour now, I have a really hard time with it. Celebrities today need to go to the Audrey Hepburn School of How to Be a Star. She should have given lessons or written a book about it!" - William Holden: "Before I even met Audrey, I had a crush on her, and after I met her, just a day later, I felt as if we were old friends . . . most men who worked with her felt both fatherly or brotherly about her, while harboring romantic feelings about her . . . she was the love of my life." - Billy Wilder: "She was so gracious and graceful that everybody fell in love with her after five minutes. Everybody was in love with this girl, I included. My problem was that I am a guy who speaks in his sleep. I toss around and talk and talk . . . But fortunately, my wife's first name is Audrey as well." - Albert Finney: "Playing a love scene with a woman as sexy as Audrey, you sometimes get to the edge where make-believe and reality are blurred., all that staring into each other's eyes -- you pick up vibes that are decidedly not fantasy . . . The time spent with Audrey is one of the closest I've ever had." - Robert Wolders: "Audrey sensed very early in her life and career that self-worth based on fame or beauty is very short-lived, and so she remained forever herself -- realistic, aware, and caring." | Oh, gosh! Well, my favorite is Breakfast at Tiffany's hands down. It's also one of my favorite movies, if not my favorite!!! It's my first Audrey movie, so it has sentimental value, but I just think she was amazing in it. I think I just found it incredibly classy how she carried herself in the movie. Posted this on the old thread and I didn't want to have to say it all over again! Quote:

| thanks heaps! whats your names btw? ![]() I totally agree with you! That movie is definitley one of my fave audrey movies, if not my fave out of every other movie too. You said it all so perfectly in the quote. she did need saving, but silently. She did have an act and i wonder if she would have been able to keep it all going. ![]() i love it, and also My fair lady is definitley a keeper for me! i jut love the whole thing, the songs are so catchy and it has a great story line. I agree with you also about Audrey being subtle in her beauty, she didn't need to try hard at all, her inner beauty shone through and make her look perfect. she seems like she was such a lovely person and cared so much for other people, i think thats why alot of people found it easy to be around her. I'm going to a party tonight and i'm going to wear my lil' Audrey Hepburn badge i think shes such an inspiration, i would love to be like her, even in the smallest of ways, like her need to help others.I've just added ALOT more quotes I added about 10 quotes by Audrey, there up the top of the quotes, and also alot of quotes about her, there down the bottom more. tell me if you think they're too much.I LOVE LOVE LOVE the graphic! It makes the opening so much better! i love it, thanks! I love your Avvie AshleyInWonderland! ![]() __________________ I'm only half of what you see.
