So I finally finished my Brad/Jen ficlet based on a song I was listening too.

Warning: It's angsty and sort of depressing, but it went with the song, if you don't like sad stuff, don't read it.

Title: Where I Stood
Couples: Brad/Jen (with some Jen/John and Brad/Angie)
Song: Where I Stood- Missy Higgins (changed some lyrics around to fit)
Summary: Brad's POV as he thinks about his Jen with John after the Oscars. John and Jen have not broken up in this. The lyrics are in italics. I cut out the choruses except the last one. This kind of alternates between past and present. But I tried to make it clear when I was talking about the present versus the past.

Brad was sleeping besides Angie, or at least trying too. His thoughts kept drifting to Jen, she looked so beautiful at the Oscars, it killed him that John was with her, that he would be the one helping her through this night.

He couldn't believe what he had done, how he lost such a beautiful girl. How much he had hurt her. He was so stupid, he lost a wonderful girl, all because he thought he wanted more. Thought he wanted Angie, but he didn't. He wanted Jen.

I don't know what I've done
Or if I like what I've begun

He couldn't believe he had thrown away all of it, his marriage to Jen, how much in love with her, ever having kids with her, and for what? For some woman that he thought was better than Jen, who he thought would make his life better, but she hadn't.

He didn't like what he's begun, but there was no turning back, he couldn't change what he's done, when he first kissed Angie and started it all. He couldn't go back, no matter how much he wanted too.

But something told me to run
And honey you know me it's all or none

When he had first been with Angie, that first time, something had told him to run, he didn't want to be with her, he loved Jen, he wanted to be with Jen and not Angie, but somehow when he got started, he couldn't stop. It was all or none.

There were sounds in my head
Little voices whispering
That I should go and this should end
Oh and I found myself listening

There were sounds in his head, he didn't know what they were, but they were like tiny whispers, after he was with Angie, he didn't know what it was, but they were telling him he needed to leave Jen and end things, and sadly he listened. Even though he knew that no one could compare to Jen, he didn't even know why he listened to the voices, he wanted to be with Jen, but something drew him to Angie.

See I thought love was black and white
That it was wrong or it was right

He had always thought love was black and white, that there was wrong and there was right. Wrong was having an affair with Angie while he was married to Jen, right was not having the affair and being with Jen.

But you ain't leaving without a fight
And I think I am just as torn inside

He remembered the night he told Jen that he was leaving, that they should get divorced, how she said she wasn't letting him leave without a fight, she loved him, they had been happy together, before she had come along.

He remembered how when he left, she had broken down, he hated seeing Jen depressed, and knowing he was the cause of it. It had nearly torn him in two, he hated seeing Jen hurt, but he had made his decision to be with Angie, he didn't know why he had made that choice, okay he did, he had felt it was too late to save them, he had already been with Angie, and since he had already started the cheating, he didn't think Jen could ever forgive him for that, so he decided to leave.

But you taught me how to trust myself and so I say to you
This is what I have to do

He smiled remembering the first time she had called. It was because she was getting over a breakup and didn't know who else to call except him. He hadn't been with Angie, she was at home with the kids, and he was off filming a movie, but he remembered how nice it was when she called. How much he loved hearing her voice, how he had comforted her.

She meant so much to him, and no one could take her place, not even Angie. She had taught him how to trust in himself, how to believe in himself. That's one of the reasons he fell in love with her. She had been everything to him, they were Hollywood's golden couple and he had lost it all because of one mistake.

he who dares to stand where I stood

He didn't know who he was without his Jen. Okay he knew what people saw him as, father, actor, boyfriend to Angie. Yes he was all those things but without his Jen, he was nothing.

He couldn't stand another hand upon her. Like when he saw her with John at the Oscars, he couldn't stand it everytime he glanced back and saw her with him, or John was touching her. All he could think was that should be me. He knew John would love her more than he could, John would never hurt Jen, but it still hurt him to see her with him, especially since John dared to stand where he had once stood.

He put his arm around Angie, holding her close, and trying to block out the pain of seeing his Jen with another man, not just any man but with John. He still loved Jen, he could pretend all he wanted with Angie, but his heart belonged to Jen and always would.

Note: I have no claim to Jen or Brad, this is purely a work of fiction, this is not to be taken as reality, I am not saying this is how Brad feels or what he thinks, this is purely my imagination. And I have no clue if I like this, but at least I tried.

My mom said she read somewhere in a magazine, they originally wanted Brad and Jen to play the parts in Time Traveler's Wife. That would have been bittersweet.
