Amanda Righetti and Jared Padalecki Talk 'Friday the 13th' Remake at Scream Awards!

t’s getting harder and harder to think of classic genre films that haven’t been remade, or aren’t in the process of being remade. So rather than get uptight about filmmakers “wrecking” the original, let’s just sit back and enjoy the blood-soaked ride, wherever it takes us. We did just that the other night at the Spike TV Scream Awards – with Amanda Righetti and Jared Padalecki, two of the stars of the upcoming Friday the 13th remake. They told us what it’s like to be part of the classic series. And don’t worry – we asked Jared about Supernatural, too!



Were you a fan of the original Friday the 13th movies?

Righetti: A few of them, yeah. It’s really exciting to be in the remake. They took the best elements of the first four, and wrapped them into one. They’ve gotten away from the later movies, where Jason was this sort of robotic, stalking super-human monster. He’s more human, and moves like a human, like he did in the first few movies.

Padalecki: Yeah, I am. The originals, I’m a fan of in the sense that they are campy, kind of cheesy, and you half-laugh, half-scream. But this is going to be raw and real and scary. This one is going to be much scarier than the originals. And we don’t have Kevin Bacon. We tried. Ok, I don’t know if they tried – I’m just making **** up.

How did you prepare for something like this? Normally, slasher movies are shot with no budget, no stars.

Padalecki: It was exciting. It’s a huge franchise. There are going to be fans that are just really excited. I’ve had a lot of people that I work with in Vancouver [on Supernatural] that do FX go, “Listen, I know you are in the new Friday the 13th, I’m so excited, I was at Comic-Con, blah blah blah.” I was like, “Dude, why didn’t you call me? We work together – you could have called me, and you could have met Jason or something.”

It was exciting just to jump in. I had no time to think about it. I was shooting Supernatural in Vancouver on Tuesday, and Friday the 13th in Austin on Wednesday. I didn’t have time to get nervous, which is probably better.

Your character probably does not get slaughtered, right?

Padalecki: We’ll see. They’ve shot a few options. I’m going to find out myself, probably opening night.

So you don’t even know?

Padalecki: I don’t, but I have an idea. I will get slaughtered if I talk about it!

Jared, what can we expect from Supernatural at this point?

Padalecki: We’re ten episodes in – not even halfway through the season. Usually our season opener and season finale are the “killer episodes,” but this year, starting with episode seven, they’re all killer. We have a few “to be continueds” which is nice, because we can really tell the story. What we found out with Supernatural over the last three years is that fans really respond to the mythology. It’s fun to do “monster-of-the-week” episodes – we did a monster movie episode that was fun – but people have really responded to the through-line of the show.

What is your greatest fear?

Righetti: Being burned alive. I had a close call when I was very young. I was very stupid – playing with matches or something like that.

Padalecki: You know, I was actually thinking about this the other day, and I thought of something, but now I can’t remember. I sound all tough – “I ain’t skeered.” I don’t have any specific fears, like snakes or anything. I’m so boring.
