We actually did have the same thoughts.

Dean went to hell for Sam but loosing Dean was hell for Sam, too. And Dean couldn´t stand living a day without him and brought him back. Sam had four months without Dean. He was so lost and hit rock bottom after Dean went to hell. He was and is still feeling guilty for not saving his brother and the hunting was the only thing that kept him alive, I believe. But with no Dean on his side he had to find a way to make it work without him. And with saving so many innocent people his life became meaningful again. And you can´t tell me that if Dean was in Sam place that he wouldn´t go after Lilith after everything that happened.

I definitely agree with this. All the guilt of not being able to save Dean, plus the burden of that demon blood eventually killing Jess and Mary - Sam just had too much of people he loves dying because of what's in him. It's more of an inner struggle and I was so amazed by Jared's performance to be able to show it.

Great post! I agree with everything basically, especially the parts I quoted! Sam needed understanding, if only for a moment for someone to say, "I know, Sam, I know." It's lonely when you're the only of your "kind", Sam needed a pat on the back every now and then, not a smack.

I love the Frodo/Sam analogy, I agree with it entirely.

This is where it gets more annoying and sad. We wanted to reach out to Sammy but we can't. (it's really a good tv!) But the people who SHOULD be understand him and giving him that 'pat on the back' are the ones telling him that he's a monster.

That's why I loved Chuck, he was so good and understanding and Sammy looked relieved to have that.
