Dean (Jensen Ackles) is stunned after he receives a phone call from his dad (guest star Jeffrey Dean Morgan) who tells him he has a solution to get Dean out of his deal.

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean fight because Sam is skeptical that it is really John on the other end of the phone and warns Dean not to listen to him but Dean disagrees and sets off on his own path to follow his father's orders.

Charles Beeson directed the episode written by Jeremy Carver.

Oh man. I thought the episode could've been way better. Jared looked ridiculously hot, though.

I just wish that the show could move forward since nothing happened tonight that we didn't know already. At least Dean told Sam that Ruby said there was no way to save him (hoping that's not true .)

Thank you! I've been reading how people just loved this episode, and for me it kinda fell flat, sure it had some good moments, but the over all episode left me wanting a lot more.

I'm leaning towards disappointed, a Sera episode, and JDM guesting even in just voice and we got only this?

Jared put in a great performance though. I liked Sam's heart to heart with Dean.

I feel the same way as you. I was expecting a big episode and it started out great, but the second half was not. Everything felt wrong.

Yes! The performances were so good, I agree. Jared was great playing his confusion about the case, not wanting Dean to get his heartbroken, etc. Jensen was great playing scared, it makes me so sad!

At least we had good performances and a few good lines!

It really did, I was hoping John/Monster would play with Dean's head a bit, I mean I'm not wishing even more angst on poor Dean, but you'd think he'd mess with his head, like when it said, "How could you?" I was hoping it would really run with that, telling Dean that he shouldn't have sold his soul for Sam because Sam still has evil in him or anything like that.

I agree! Poor Dean, Jenesn played him very well, I loved how his voice sorta broke when he told John that he was just protecting Sammy like he had told him too. and then at the end when he's telling Sam how scare he is.

Sam i'm on the fence with, he didn't give me any issues LOL but he seemed a bit off, I mean I guess he was in character, here his big brother who he has insane amounts of hero worship for is going off the deep end and not using his head, so Sam doesn't really know how to handle that, Dean is the level headed one...ok maybe not level headed but you know what I mean, but yet I was expecting him to be there more for Dean, like ok I don't think this is John but I'm going to stick right by your side until we can figure this out one way or the other. And at the end when he find Dean back at the hotel room, shouldn't he have been a bit paniced? sure he killed the bad guy but he had no idea if Dean and the other guy killed each other. No fault of this is on Jared's performance, he was fantatsic last night...I just think it was sloppy writing which is a shock since it was a Sera episode.

^ I felt that about Sam too. I expected to see Sam swoop in and save Dean or rush back to check he was okay. There should have been more concern there.

I totally thought Sam was giving up too quickly when Dean was about to lose it. I think he was trying to hold everything together, but it bothered me that Dean was seriously scared and he didn't do much.

Now, as I didn't like the episode very much, I hope that the writers were having an off day altogether and that's why Sammy was not helping Dean out more. Or, maybe Sam has a plan or thinks he has a plan.

The beginning of the episode it was Dean wanting to hunt and Sam wanting to keep working on saving him. The role reversal in the rest of the episode was too severe imo.

Again I'm going to agree! It almost seemed like he couldn't be bothered, I was trying to find excuses for it but there really isn't any good ones. I'm really hoping this isn't some kind of forshadowing to the remaining two episodes. I can take a dark Sam if I have to, but I'll be super pissed if suddendly we get a very OOC Sam that doesn't care.

ETA, It was pointed up to me on the SPN board that the CW site had the credits wrong, this was not a Sera episode, it was a Jeremy Carver episode, (Sin City, A very SPN xmas & Mystery SPot)...this explains so much!

Hehe. I like Jeremy Carver but this episode, hmmmmm, not that much.
