Ugly Betty' Attracts Hispanic Marketing, PR August 18, 2006 By Nancy Ayala The catchphrase "She's no Betty" ironically paints the perfect picture of the protagonist of ABC's new prime-time hope Ugly Betty, premiering Sept. 28. But what may appear to be an unattractive name slight for the new comedy may turn into ratings gold if the network can also channel efforts into tapping U.S. Hispanics, who are more likely to have first watched the successful telenovela in Latin America, on Telemundo a few years ago or in its current successful incarnation on Univision. ABC recently hired the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based Hispanic firm Arenas Entertainment to strategize and market the program for Latinos in the U.S., and Reyes Entertainment, also based in the Los Angeles area, has taken charge of securing publicity in Spanish-language media. "[Betty la Fea] has been such a worldwide phenomenon. We need to piggyback on that success," says Gabriel Reyes, president of Reyes Entertainment. "I also think it's important to let people know that it's a new version." Spanish-language press kits are soon to hit Hispanic media desks and radio interviews are planned for the Latino cast, which includes America Ferrera, Tony Plana and Ana Ortiz, says Reyes. Arenas Entertainment will spearhead marketing in theaters in roughly 137 markets, vans going into high-density Hispanic neighborhoods with promotional material and grass-roots events, such as a screening of Ugly Betty during People en Español's all-day Fiesta 2006 celebration in New York's Central Park on Oct. 7. More traditional marketing will involve ads in Latina, TV y Notas, Vanidades, ¡Mira! and Cosmopolitan en Español magazines. Online portals Yahoo! Telemundo, Terra and AOL Latino are on board, as well as various Hispanic cable networks such as MTV Tr3s, Galavisión and, yes, even Univision, whose own La Fea Más Bella will go head to head with Ugly Betty this fall. "We have nontraditional things that will be very buzz-worthy [for the U.S. Hispanic market]," says Marla Provencio, a senior vice president of marketing at ABC. "This is the first time that we've ever done this, that we actually have money to put toward this market. We feel very excited. It's a jumping point for a wonderful tradition of talking to the Hispanic audience." Though a specific amount could not be disclosed, Provencio is adamant that Spanish-dominant viewers not be left behind. "The biggest challenge is educating everyone about how to use SAP [or second audio program in Spanish]," she says. "We want to take advantage of it, and that is part of the strategy [in hiring] Arenas." Provencio says ABC has internal research that monitors how many viewers are utilizing SAP. ABC announced in fall of last year that all its prime-time entertainment programming would be available in Spanish, including closed captioning and dubbing. Desperate Housewives, Lost, The George Lopez Show and Grey's Anatomy are among the ABC shows that have made ratings inroads with U.S. Hispanics, according to Nielsen Media Research. Arenas Group initially will work on marketing for Desperate Housewives, which stars the highly popular Eva Longoria with audiences across the board. Ugly Betty will lead into Grey's Anatomy on Thursday nights, which also co-stars Tony winner Sara Ramirez as of last season. With so many lovely Latinas making their way into prime time on mainstream TV, an unwittingly "unattractive" perception has already surfaced about the name Ugly Betty, Provencio concedes. "The title has come up every once in awhile," but, she adds that even Salma Hayek, who is executive producer of the show, pointed out during a recent TV critics' convention in Los Angeles that it's a joke and not to be taken seriously. "This is a woman who is beautiful," Provencio says. "But it may just end up being [referred to as] Betty." Also, someone on LJ posted some clips. ![]() Go here. Another article from here. Just posting the main part and the UB part. If you want to read the rest of her top 10, click on the link. ![]() Posted on Mon, Aug. 21, 2006 Top 10 must-see shows this fall By MARISA GUTHRIE New York Daily News Not since “Desperate Housewives” and “Lost” premiered two years ago and further widened the quality gap between smart entertainment on the little screen and the dreck flung at movie screens, have so many hot shows blown in like autumn leaves. It is indisputably the year of the drama. “The Nine,” a mystery with style and heart, and “Friday Night Lights,” a football melodrama that comes at you like a 300-pound linebacker, are among the best new shows to premiere in any season. The influence of “24” and “Lost” is fully realized this year in serialized dramas (“The Nine,” “Kidnapped,” “Heroes”) that unfold over the course of the season. It’s as if network executives have finally awakened to the fact that viewers’ attention spans far surpass that of a gnat (or their own), and just maybe there is room on television for something different. Which brings us to “Ugly Betty.” Based on a telenovela set in the bloodthirsty world of a high-fashion glossy, “Betty” is unlike anything else on television. America Ferrera is absolutely perfect as the proverbial ugly duckling who ends up turning heads and stealing hearts. So after viewing the pilot episodes of all the new shows, except “Brothers and Sisters” — which wasn’t available because of substantial reshoots — here is a rundown (in descending order) of the top 10 for 2006. 1. UGLY BETTY Thursdays, 8 p.m., ABC America Ferrera, who was so irresistible in “Real Women Have Curves,” again inhabits a character who slowly schools the superficial snobs around her that real women have heart. Ferrera is Betty Suarez, a socially awkward Latina who gets a job as the assistant to a womanizing fashion magazine editor (Eric Mabius). The boss sets about humiliating her so she’ll quit (and he can hire an X-ray sycophant who looks good at meetings and under his desk). You’ll admire Betty’s pluck, relate to her insecurities and cheer for her triumphs. “Ugly Betty” is a thing of beauty. Vanessa L. Williams co-stars. It makes me smile knowing she put the show #1. ![]() __________________ I’m like a performer, the dancefloor is my stage Better be ready, hope that ya feel the same icon by fabiola91 Last edited by *Stacy* : 08-21-2006 at 02:05 AM. | |||

Now a days, it's so scary. Stations just pull shows right when you've become addicted. Found this article I had posted on America's comm on LJ. Thought it was a good read and others might want to check it out. ![]() Article on the filming of Ugly Betty From the NY Daily News: TV shoot turns parsonage into Holy-wood BY NICHOLAS HIRSHON DAILY NEWS WRITER NYDailyNews Parsonage in Long Island City is transformed by crew shooting 'Ugly Betty,' a television pilot. There were no palm trees anywhere around, and the sight of sunbleached sidewalks is still a few months away, but one portion of Ditmars Blvd. in Long Island City had a decidedly Hollywood feel this week. The focal point was a parsonage near Ditmars and 41st St. that ordinarily is the home of the Rev. Jeanne Boland, pastor of the Steinway Reformed Church next door. Boland had her cat boarded, and planned to stay in a hotel last night as production crews finished their second and last day of filming scenes for an ABC-TV pilot, "Ugly Betty." But Boland wasn't complaining, because she expected the TV crews would leave the church "better than they found it" - and provide her with significant monetary compensation - putting a fresh coat of any color paint she desires on the 114-year-old parsonage. "It comes at a time that it's a great blessing," she said. "We have substantial repairs that we need to do and it will help a great deal." Neighbors also have embraced the crews, Boland noted, even though their presence resulted in more activity and fewer parking spaces near the 116-year-old church. "Ugly Betty," a one-hour drama/comedy, follows an unattractive secretary at a New York City fashion magazine, where the publisher's unqualified son, Daniel, has been named editor-in-chief. The show stars America Ferrera ("Lords of Dogtown") in the title role, with Eric Mabius ("The O.C.") playing Daniel, and Vanessa Williams as an underling who constantly spars with him. Salma Hayek is among the pilot's executive producers, and Richard Shepard ("The Matador") is the director. Leo Shvedsky, the locations assistant on the set, said Shepard wanted the "look of rowhouses in Jackson Heights" and targeted the parsonage, used as Betty's home, because its large size would make it easier for crews to work inside. About three weeks ago, someone dropped a flyer in Boland's mailbox explaining the director's interest in filming there, and she soon called to accept the offer. The specifics were ironed out after Shepard visited in early March, when he found he was allergic to Boland's cat. Crews then started moving in furniture and wallpapering the house, using the church's rest rooms and turning one of its rooms into a catering hall. Touchtone Pictures spokeswoman Jamie Fischer said the fate of "Ugly Betty" and other pilots will be announced in May. If it is picked up, Boland explained, crews will not film at the parsonage but instead would build a replica, possibly at nearby Silvercup Studios. Such a scenario could be a positive development for the TV and film industry in the five boroughs. "This is definitely the year of New York City's comeback," Shvedsky said. ET Online Also, if you live in the Dallas, Texas area, here's some info on the show. ![]() ABC and Channel 8 invite you to a special double feature. Be the first to see two hot new ABC shows, Ugly Betty and Men in Trees. UGLY BETTY (Thursdays at 8/7CT) In the superficial world of high fashion, image is everything. Styles come and go, and the only constants are the wafer-thin beauties who wear them. How can an ordinary girl -- a slightly plump plain-Jane from Queens -- possibly fit in? Executive producers Salma Hayek and Silvio Horta, the creator of "Urban Legend," bring the Latino television phenomenon to an English-speaking audience. America Ferrera ("The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants") and Eric Mabius ("The L Word") are the "Working Girl" couple who tackle the colorful, cutthroat world of fashion head on. MEN IN TREES (Fridays at 9/8 CT) Finding a good man in today's world isn't as difficult as some women think. You just have to watch out for the signs. You wouldn't drive with a blindfold on but, for some reason, women continue to date with one. From the head writer of "Sex and the City" and the director of the Academy Award(r)-winning "Walk the Line" comes a fun and sexy drama about finding love in the most unexpected places. Anne Heche ("Nip/Tuck") stars as relationship coach Marin Frist. Plus, don't miss your chance to be on the hit-show Supernanny! Casting producers will be on-hand to meet with parents in need. Only ticket holders will be admitted to meet with casting producers, and don't forget it's 17 to enter, so children will not need to be present for the interview.
