The Butterfly Effect Parts 1 & 2
Friday 16th October, 2009

In the first hour, Betty finds that everything is changing as she begins her new job as associate features editor, especially since her boss is her ex-boyfriend, Matt Hartley, who is still unhappy about their breakup. In addition, Betty's new officemate, Megan (Smith Cho), openly resents her, while Marc is constantly undermining her because he felt he was more deserving of the promotion. Meanwhile, without Betty as his assistant, Daniel is adrift, still mourning the loss of his wife, Molly. Betty tries to help Megan out on an assignment and connects with a thoughtful insect jewelry designer, Olivia (Lynn Redgrave), while Justin starts high school and is victimized by bullies-but won't tell his mom, Hilda. Claire Meade is finding that her power struggle at the company has her sitting pretty - for the moment -- opposite Wilhemina, who lost her claim to the Meade throne last season. But Wili has perhaps an even bigger problem than job security - she is harboring a secret at home that is driving Marc to distraction.

In Part 2 , Betty gets to run her own Mode photo shoot at the United Nations to promote their anti-malaria initiative, "Nothing but Nets," but her big opportunity becomes a baptism by fire when Daniel's neediness takes its toll, and Matt openly demoralizes her. Meanwhile, Amanda does some soul-searching when she bonds with Daniel's new temp, Helen (Kristen Johnston), a career receptionist as fabulous as Amanda is. Wili makes it her personal mission to protect a loved one, and Hilda reaches out to Marc to figure out how to help Justin.

Thanks for the new thread, Sadia! You know, I actually saw the beginning of The Butterfly Effect on my TVGuide channel; and it was completely by accident! I got there just as Betty awakes from some orthodontist dream in the whitest, brightest room ever. (No she doesn't get her braces off in the dream/nightmare. I wish.)

Anyway, I was excited to see this (I actually thought I'd get to see the whole episode one day in advance!) but alas it was one super long sneak peek from the TVGuide channel. Well, at least I didn't get to miss Community.

So it starts out in high spirits for Betty and Justin who start their first days as "freshmen and freshwomen" in their new high school (complete with metal detectors) and their new editing job (with sauna/gym perks), respectively. (They even mention Christina! Aww. ) But of course it all goes to hell with high school bullying that juxtaposes with Betty's passive aggressive co-workers (Amanda's actually friendly with Betty but because Marc is still in grudge-holding mode over the job she's gotta side with her gay bestie so Betty is alone. At least in that whole intro part I saw before the credits.) Also the mystery person Wili saw is, I guess, not a threat, because she's actively hiding him/her from Marc. Hmm.

I didn't see the sneak peeks posted in the OP and I now realize I might have just wasted my typing strength on stuff you already knew. Well I had to get it out. I was just that excited!

I LOVED this episode. I feel like it was a nod to the old Ugly Betty of season 1, but it beautifully recognized how far Betty has come. And on her own terms. She looks great this year, too, with the new clothes and the sideswept bangs.

Matt still bothers me. I don't completely hate him, but I don't want them getting back together.

Some great Detty scenes tonight. Made me "ship" them again. The end was classic. And thank you for punching Matt!

Amanda and Mark....would've liked more.

Justin...AWESOME. I hope we get more storylines with him.

Would've liked more Hilda/Archie. It's my favorite relationship of hers. Well, since Santos is dead.

First of all: I love you Daniel! (More on that later) Second: You rock Butterfly Betty! (Symbolism ahoy!)

This two hour season extravaganza was Betty-tastic! I've already covered the first, like, 15 minutes of the episode in my previous post (thanks TVguide channel!) So lemme cover the major things I liked in hour one and two:

- Justin visits Mode and talks to Marc (but it's off screen? Booo...) Marc and Hilda's interaction is surprisingly funny. (Do not mess with an angry finger pointing HildaMama!) But of course there's the teenage drama and Justin not talking to Hilda sucked but was to be expected.

- Speaking of Marc, his snooping leads to the revelation of Wili's mystery guest and the "previouslys" made it seem like it was Connor but those crafty devils actually pulled one over on me! Nico was the one who visited her mom and she's all bloody? Looks like someone got ten times more interesting.

- Meanwhile, Betty's plan of bribing her haters with free uber-healthy muffins and getting info on an old bug jewel designer pays off. (BTW, Betty watching the butterfly coming out of the cocoon with the jewelry designer along with the pep talk from the woman about the caterpillar being inside the butterfly and how changes are good is so relevant and symbolic I feel there's no need to explain.) While it was neat seeing butterflies gather around her because she was so colorful, I must complain to the SFX guys who should've splurged a few extra bucks to make the butterflies fluttering a tad more realistic. (The scene looks better as stills. I might make an icon or two!)

- I think I was as happy as most of the D/B shippers when I saw Daniel was back. Yay, finally a friend at Mode! And he got a scruffy beard in Tibet! Not a full out beard of angst and recluse (ala X-Files Mulder) but there's gonna be some sad moments for Daniel later on. (The airport freak out might've been a clue if New York security doesn't suck. ) Anyway, Daniel's imitation of a mama bear (or HildaMama) was adorable if not totally damaging (You know, I never thought I'd get a kick about them discussing Betty being "Daniel's girl"! )

In the second part, we get Betty back to square one with her co-workers who accuse her of Daniel favoritism. Doesn't help that he suffers a break down and she chooses to help him over his Molly angst in lieu of heading the Malaria spread.

- Thanks to some sage advice from SuperDad, Justin and Hilda share a nice moment that reminds us they're not as close as they used to be because they're growing and things change and all. It's kind of like the moment between Claire and Betty earlier on. What? Oh right, Claire was in this episode but other than trade barbs with Wilhelmina involving STDs or something, and that Betty moment, she was not around much. In two hours, she was there for all of, seven minutes?

- Other moments that only matter for the premier involve Amanda and the older temp, Helen. They talk of getting drunk, getting groped, and getting no where in life. Oh, and Ben from Jon and Kate. By the end of it, Amanda almost has a revelation but then, you know, decides to get drunk. But in the end, Helen the temp leaves after not helping Daniel at all (which was her job because he still has no assistant), and when you think about it, it's better he didn't have to face her in his pissed off, cursing, kick anything state of mind. (The scene with Betty trying to cheer him up at Molly's apartment was uber sweet.)

- The guy Nico killed was her boyfriend and Wili helped her cover up the murder, then easily lied to a detective about it. Oh those two give the Gilmore Girls a run for their money on mother/daughter bonding! I wonder how long this will fester until it comes to haunt them? Will Nico even be mentioned next week? In any case, Wili was as cool as a cucumber both at home and at work when she takes over Betty's Malaria shoot.

- Yes, the Malaria shoot where things inevitably go wrong and everyone blames Betty for the pettiest of things. Megan didn't annoy me nearly as much as Matt. Seriously, his none too clever references of their past relationship; can't she sue? Harassment or something? Well, forget suing Matt, because Daniel let's Mr. Fist teach him some manners! Matt shall not question Betty's honor anytime soon. P.S: I LOVE YOU DANIEL!!! And then that moment on the bridge, an actual bridge in NYC, where they discuss their friendship... awww! I'd totally ship them if Henry wasn't in the picture. For now, I love friendshipping them. Scruffy Brooding Daniel kicks Thoughtless Playboy Daniel's ass!

- In the end, Betty wears the pantsuit, a gift from Christina, and she rocks it. She won't be making Marc's blog of failed Betty outfits (Though to be fair, the butterfly costume shouldn't count; it was Halloween! *sigh* Reminicing about Henry again... I'll never be a true D/B shipper. ). Oh, and it ends with Daniel and Betty driving off in their own town cars. Because they're equals, you see. And friends! Adorableness!

Change can be good. And this episode proves it. I can't wait for the next episode with an evil Marc!

I have missed this show so much. I thought I missed it last week and was upset by that. If I was not otherwise really busy I would have been making lots of angryhone calls to ABC (still think the network is acting stupidly, but that is besides the point).

I enjoyed this more than the other season premires. My thesis that the problems the show has are caused by a complicated relationship to its parent material (not just Yo Soy Betty, la Fea, but all telenovelas in general). I am worried that the Wilhemina/Nico story will be a continuation of this, but I will wait. There was more of a real tension a dark humor.

Loved Wilhemina with Betty. It when she is at her best.

Matt is my favorite of Betty's boyfriends. It is not that I ship them or they are OTP or anything - I just like who and where they are together best. I enjoyed woulded Mattat his worst. ALso loved that she said she would hit him in the future. Way to point out immaturity at work Betty! Miss his old hair, but I am looking forward to having more of him at Mode almost as much as Betty growing out the bangs & getting rid of the braces.

Love Marc and Amanda, Marc and Justin, Justin and Hilda, Hila and Marc, Amanda and the temp. (Glad the temp is only there once though I like Kristin Johnson)

I think Migan has potential as a diffferent kind of frenemy for Betty. Justn going to high school is also promising.

Finally Daniel in grief is good and honest. I don't know how to mve the story but it is where it needs to be.

Amanda/Mark: Reasons why I love them. Besties for life.

Mark/Justin: It's sweet Mark is helping Justin out. Justin needs someone to understand what he is going through. Justin is a sweetie along with Mark.

Betty: Change does work in good or bad ways.

Betty/Matt: Matt, Betty was telling you she was sorry for what she did with Henry. Betty, I think Matt still have some feeling for you anyways. He blames her for everything. I love when Daniel punches him at the UN Shoot.

Daniel: Awww he's griving now. He misses her deeply.

Willy/Nico: God they are going to get caught one day. Willy can't protect her little girl forever.

Betty/Daniel: I wonder when they are going to get together soon. It's killing me now. They slept on the couch together cute and sweet. Betty was worried about Daniel.

This was a great episode, I enjoyed watching this.

I want to start off by saying that I have a new found respect for the Detty friendship. They were just so sweet with each other and I loved that Daniel had Betty's back at the fashion event. I adore these two and I loved the ending as well it was so sweet.

Marc and Justin, I really liked these two they were funny and I liked that Justin went to Marc with his problems at school. Justin will never change and why would he he's a great kid.

I am glad that Justin finally talked to Hilda at the end. They have the best mother/son relationship on tv and seeing them talking at the end was bittersweet for both of them.

Daniel, I just love Daniel he has always been a great character and I feel so bad for him that he lost Molly cause I really wanted them to be together.

Whili, i'm shocked about what's going on with her daughter. I also hope that this is a good storyline as well cause I love Whili.

Good episode, i'm glad Betty is back again.

What didn't I love about this episode? I'm so glad they did a parallel between Betty's first day as an Editor and Justin's first day of High School. Brilliant idea. And just... it was such a great premiere. I have really nothing to bitch/complain about. I liked Betty's new look at the end of the episode. I didn't hate Matt as much, and he got a hell of alot sexier. And D/B had alot of moments. I like that she's not so much his boss as he's her friend. Nice.
