Episode 4x04 - "The Wiener, The Bun and The Boob" Discussion Thread
The Wiener, The Bun and The Boob Friday October, 30th 2009 Betty is overwhelmed with her editorial work, so Wilhemina assigns Marc to be Betty’s temporary assistant. Betty’s story idea to cover the worst jobs in New York goes south when she has to dress up as a hot dog and do a Bollywood dance number. Meanwhile, Marc frets that he’ll never be taken seriously by his idol at Vogue magazine, Hilda gets Archie’s campaign in trouble, Daniel hires a gorgeous but inept assistant (supermodel Brooklyn Decker), and Natalie introduces Daniel to the Community — a group whose charismatic leader (Dylan Baker) zeroes in on Daniel. I can't wait for tonight episode. I am really liking Matt. Sure he is being a dink but we all know he is a nice guy who is just hurt.
By the way, he is looking REALLY good this season. |

Loved tonight's episode. I was hoping things would start to smooth out between Marc and Betty. They work well together. Not sure what will happen with Matt, but seeing Amanda want him is hilarious. If you missed tonight's episode, I have a full recap here.

I liked the episode,I'm glad that Marc and Betty made up and are able to be "friends" again.

This was a vast improvement over last week.
Betty's clothes are adorable this year! The Sexy Lexi plot was pretty funny, though I'm glad she won't be around much anymore. What's the deal with Daniel and Jamie Lyn Sigler? I like their scenes, but I don't think it'd make for a healthy relationship. So yeah, I don't know how I feel about where it might go. Amanda's daydream....hilarious! I think her and Matt would be fairly cute. I'd like to see Cal Hartley's reaction. Nico was better in this episode. She fit more into the actual storylines, and it was nice to see her and Wili bond. LOVED Betty/Marc. I always love their episodes. The moment where he almost hugged her was so sweet. And yay, I got some Archie/Hilda. Wasn't much, but I'll take it. They are so cute. __________________

I thought this episode was really fun. It moved fast and made us laugh. It was perhaps a little much for my 10-year-old--the Hilda/Archie storyline, anyway--but with it being in the 9 o'clock hour now, that's a risk. Use it as yet another lesson about not e-mailing anything you wouldn't want your grandmother to see!
Even the lesser storylines amused me this week--Nico was used in a way that actually harkened back to her Season 1 appearance. We commented that Wilhelmina's trash can seems to be the same one that she dumped the Capn Crunch (or whatever they called it) into. I'm not crazy about the Nico/murder storyline, but maybe it'll get more interesting? Bringing her into Mode gave her a more fun use this week. The Marc/Betty stuff was funny and I'm glad it's finally out that she won that position in a coin toss. I liked the way they helped each other, and the ending was cute and warm. I'd hate to see their relationship backslide into full Season 1 and 2 hatred after all the progress they made last season. Because dreadful or not, Season 3 did provide some character growth. Is it just me, or is there possibly a move afoot with Daniel and Betty? Matt questioned their relationship in the premiere, and Marc has made comments a couple times suggesting they're lovers. (Or "luvvahs") I'm not sure if the move would be to make Daniel and Betty question their own closeness, or whether it would be to actually bring them closer to a more significant relationship. Some of their interaction this week seemed flirty--a few of Daniel's comments, anyway--and that conversation about Bradford hiring Betty, etc., was a little suggestive to me. Like we're being reminded of that for a reason that had nothing to do with Lexi like Sexy. Amanda's kissing fantasy . . . well, we'll just have to see where that goes. We saw lots of thawing in terms of Matt and Betty this week, and next week's scenes make it look like the friendship between Amanda and Betty is going to be challenged. I kind of like the idea of Matt and Amanda. I've never been sure about Matt and Betty. I hope with this cult stuff with Daniel, they don't make him seem too stupid. He graduated from Harvard, for God's sake. I like the character of Natalie more than I thought I would, even though I'm pretty sure she's a plant. Claire Meade makes me laugh. Every time she's on screen. She has ever since she first appeared in Season 1. (We still laugh about her saying, "Claire Meade. Daniel Meade's mother. I win." to Betty after Betty introduced herself as Daniel Meade's assistant.) Claire's interesting and dark and complicated, and I hope she gets some real storylines this season. I wonder if we're supposed to believe she and Cal Hartley have a relationship beyond business right now. I hope UB can keep up the momentum. I liked the premiere and I liked this one--last week, not so much. We always enjoy UB, but some are better than others. |

That reminds me...I practically spit out soda when Marc called Betty and Daniel "Luvvvvas."

Well I had this whole long summary about what I liked in this episode but when I went to post it late last night decided to do maintenance or something and I lost all my data.
So I'll summarize what I remember: Like everyone else here I enjoyed the Marc and Betty moments, from the hotdog Bollywood dance to the Betty-saving-Marc moment and vice versa. But what I particularly enjoyed was the confession from Marc that he’s always been unlucky in the business (aka "always the bun"). This is why people like Marc (and Amanda), for all their seeming shallow cruelness towards Betty are still likable. (Unlike "Lexi like sexy".) Speaking of, I was a bit disappointed when Daniel reverted to his old ways of "hiring an assistant based on hotness". But I'm gonna chalk it up to his grieving process and vulnerability which I guess we'll see manipulated with this whole cult thing that Daniel attended with his new goth friend (who I now know is Natalie and isn't a one-time guest star like I originally thought. She's definitely different which isn't a bad thing and I'd definitely choose her over the Blonde Banshee as a multi-episode guest star,) The Hilda storyline was alright. Some hilarity and embarrassment plus some screen time time for her congressman boyfriend and SuperDad (who picked a bad time to learn e-mail, I gotta say. ) Did Justin get more than a line or two? I think Claire got more of his screentime which seems to be a trade-off in a big cast like this. Oh well. Last but not least, Wilhelmina trying to kiss Claire and Hartley butt was funny but I'm glad she stopped in time to snuff out the vampire idea (I'm with Wili when she says Mode is a leader, not a follower, of trends). Her hovering over Nico was worth it to see the two bond in the end over frozen yogurt (even if only one of them actually ate the yogurt.) Now let's see how long until authorities pay another visit with the new blood evidence from the yacht. Also how long until they bring up the Connor issue again. I'm all atwitter with anticipation! And on the Amanda front, while this episode got the wheels turning on the possibility of an Amanda/Matt romance (which I must say I'm interested in now that Matt's jerk behavior is all but gone) it looks like next episode is when the actual love triangle comes to a head. (And the only thing I'm not liking about this love triangle idea is Betty possibly *still* harboring feelings for Matt. Please don't go that route, writers.) __________________
