Episode 3x14 - "The Courtship of Betty's Father" Discussion Thread

The Courtship of Betty's Father
Thursday 12th February, 2009

Betty tapes a video tribute for Claire Meade's 60th birthday that's very revealing, just not in the way she planned. But the real shocker comes when Betty accidentally leaves the camera on at home and discovers some revealing footage about Ignacio. Meanwhile, Daniel and Wilhelmina have difficulty adjusting to the new significant others in their lives.

There aren't any promo pictures, booo.

Thanks for starting the thread, Sadia. Three guesses as to who is courting Betty's father.

Wow. Judging by the lack of replies there's not much to be said about this episode. And yet I will try to do just that before the new episode thread gets put up.

Alright, so I was hesitant to post my thoughts on this because I didn't know how to say it exactly but taking a book from UB, I'm going the honest route. This episode was weak. The weakest of the season thus far and maybe the weakest of the entire series thus far. Seriously.

Now I can only imagine that the writers wanted to do some kind of tribute for Valentines Day which was two days after the episode aired but their little love stories were just so thin. I could virtually see the plot being stretched paper thin before my eyes. We've got the Daniel/Molly love issues in conjunction with the Wili/Connor love issues, and on Betty's end we have Papi getting busy with his nurse (which, if it came as a surprise to anyone, please let me know so I can finally get a laugh thanks to this episode. )

Alright, maybe I'm not being fair but so many little things that should've been interesting or funny on paper didn't seem to work for me. Daniel trying to make memories with Molly was more awkward than him running into Wilhelmina and Connor, and if Molly was "blah" before, she's teetering on irritating with her lack of standing up for Daniel in the Tibetan restaurant. You know what a good response would be if your new boyfriend surprises you with a favorite restaurant invite and the waiter asks about your ex-fiance? Here's a hint: It's NOT standing and looking quietly as your boyfriend turns three different shades of red in nervous embarrassment. How about some reassurance when it counted, not hours later when he's still nauseous from the best that Little Tibet has to offer. (BTW, I'm almost positive there's no Little Tibet in NYC.)
It's worth noting that this is and all coming from someone who used to dislike Daniel less than a season ago. (We've come so far, baby. Rock on, Mabius! )

Wilhelmina's plot is barely worth mentioning. She has intimacy issues (not surprising) and gets into a "hilarious" (on paper) situation where she has to pet-sit Connor's bird who doesn't sound like it's actually talking. This is important because Wili refuses to say "I love you" first and, oops!, she says "I love Connor" in front of Blabby McParrot so after a heart to heart with Marc she confesses her love to Connor and they share a nice moment that is kinda interrupted by the bird but not really. And that's her entire story in this episode.

The third love connection plot involves the shortest courtship of Betty's father I've ever seen, or rather not seen because it apparently all happened off screen. Didn't he dislike his nurse last episode? Well much to no one's surprise he's now found some happiness with the younger nurse and Betty and Hilda aren't happy. At the end of the episode, because Betty's so understanding (and thanks to Claire Cares advice), she decides to invite Elena the nurse for dinner while Hilda glares at her. That happens in Queens but in Mode, Betty went around trying to make a video tribute for Claire's 60th birthday in lieu of working (but she mentions YETI so I guess that counts?) Betty shares many a pleasant scene with the oddly acting Claire (seriously, shoplifting? Maybe next she'll run away from home. )

So that concludes my long, I guess rant, on this episode. It could've been great but it just didn't do it for me. Oh, something else I forgot to mention: you know how promos tend to be incredibly misleading? Well I seemed to recall an exciting promo last week for this episode and, I don't want to say this episode was more boring than a lecture on paint drying but, this was not what I expected.

On a lighter note, the Christina pregnancy is brought back next week and it's in the middle of Fashion Week! Now this sounds like some good stuff.

Interesting review, Hestia! I've been meaning to post one myself but never really got round to it - I'm lacking time at the moment but I'll post later!

I enjoyed the episode much more than you though

well for me, this episode was frankly boring. it would probably rank in the bottom three for me this season. apart from betty and hilda finding out about their dad smooching with elena, it was kind of drab. it didn't offer anything new, interesting or exciting for us to discuss on the episode. even the willie and marc scenes, though as amusing as some of it was, was rather dull, in a way. looking forward to this week's instalment though. judging by the promos, it should be a definite improvement over this one, for sure.

There is one reason for why this episode was not that great apart from Detty and claire scenes. It was because there was too much Molly and i can't speak for everyone but i don't think i'll warm up to her as a character. She is just too boring and non believable as Daniel's girlfriend.
