ENCHANTED - MOVIE DISCUSSION

Where a young girl met and fell in love with a handsome prince. News of this romance upsets his mother, the evil queen. Who then uses her black magic to send the girl hurtling out of the animated world into the one place in the universe where there is no true love: modern day Manhattan.The now-real girl now has to survive in the real New York City. But -- against all odds -- she does find true love in Manhattan. Only this time around, the girl winds up falling for a married man.And -- if this situation weren't already complicated enough -- that handsome prince that the girl originally fell for? He uses his mother's black magic to also travel to Manhattan. But he's soon followed by the evil queen!So now the young girl must decide. Should she opt for the fairy tale happy ending or stick with real love in the real world? A classic Disney animated fairy tale meets with the modern, live-action romantic comedy in Walt Disney Pictures’ Enchanted. The film follows the beautiful princess Giselle (Amy Adams) as she is banished by an evil queen (Susan Sarandon) from her magical, musical animated land and finds herself in the gritty reality of the streets of modern-day Manhattan.

Shocked by this strange new environment that doesn’t operate on a 'happily ever after' basis, Giselle is now adrift in a chaotic world badly in need of enchantment. But when Giselle begins to fall in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) who has come to her aid - even though she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale prince (James Marsden) back home – she has to wonder: can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world?

James Marsden is perfect as the classic Disney prince; suave and arrogant, while Susan Sarandon obviously relishes being the evil witch. Timothy Spall plays the bumbling, and occasionally annoying, side-kick, but he also provides the basis for many of the jokes.

Disney knows what works, and have included many of their much-loved formulas, but they haven't been afraid to venture away from their traditional 'girl meets boy, they get married and live happily ever after' narrative. And that's what really makes this film stand out. If I were to sum up this film, I'd say 'a brilliant fusion'. It fuses animation with actors, Andalasia with New York, pigeons with chipmunks, Prince Charming with a Divorce Lawyer, humour with love, modern dilemmas with traditional values and Disney past, with what I hope is Disney future.

Definitely worth a watch, and the best part is, you won't even need to use your children as an excuse to go!
