| Why we click with 'Grey's' zone BY DR. BELISA VRANICH From beginning to end, our day revolves around making choices (scrambled or fried? Regular or decaf? Debit or credit?). So when we sit down to watch our favorite TV programs, the decision-making part of our brain just can't stop. Love triangles - real or imagined, short- or long-term - send us into a tizzy of calculations that make the stock exchange look like Candyland. Enter Addison, Derek and Meredith on "Grey's Anatomy," the TV schedule's romantic dilemma du jour. The hospital-set hit takes the standard three-player game and ups the ante, adding a parallel world of life-or-death decisions - making romantic choices, by association, as crucial as surgical ones. Hour-long dramas are made for this. They're like weekly therapy sessions with really good-looking people taking the place of our friends. Characters evolve, become more complex, and ultimately we end up choosing whom to root for as a Rorschach test of sorts. Is Addison a lying adulteress or is she a remorseful, imperfect human being? Is Meredith a slut who comes between their reconciliation or is she a chance at a shiny new love? Psychologically, decision-making is easy when the choices are poles apart. When they start looking similar, frustration sets in. Why? The more similar the choices, the greater the chance of being wrong (think cell phone plans, airline tickets, digital cameras). Finally, we throw up our hands and ask the waiter for a recommendation or flip a coin. We want choices, but we want easy choices. Yet it's funny how the same product gets different approaches from men and women, Men want to know how long it will last, while women want to know how much they will save. Men, unlike women, make their choices - be it a prospective partner or prospective lawn mower - based on whether they will lead to further choices. (By this point, the female brain has finished checkout and is loading up the car.) Men don't feel the need to pick sides, unless there's a ball involved. For male viewers, the "Grey's Anatomy" crisis of choice may come down to "the blond or the redhead, what's all the big fuss about?" But it's a real divide, and one that Dr. McDreamy - and female viewers - cares about. When the moment of truth comes, here's what's certain: Half of us will undoubtedly think he made the wrong decision. | I'm not a fan of this article but it mentioned Patrick. Dr. Strained Love ...Or, how 'Grey's Anatomy' fans learned to stop worrying and adore Kate Walsh BY LAURA DEBRIZZI "You must be the woman who's sleeping with my husband." With that line, Kate Walsh, playing Dr. Addison (Addy) Shepherd on TV's hit "Grey's Anatomy," click-clacked her heels into television infamy. It was two years ago, at the close of the drama's first season, and Walsh's Addison had marched toward her estranged spouse, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), and the program's protagonist/narrator, resident Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), in the halls of fictional Seattle Grace Hospital. Addison was an unexpected face from Derek's not-too-recent past, and Walsh was an addition to the ABC show, which, with her onboard, established its signature love triangle - and then got some unplanned-for results. Because instead of being just a black-clad, wronged wife with her hair coiled tight, Addison became a thinking woman's heroine. She, too, had guilt issues - she had previously slept with Derek's best friend - but was also sympathetic; a dedicated prenatal ob-gyn, she had come to Seattle Grace ready to make amends. And while the character flits between steely and humane, alternating some biting put-downs with a comforting bedside manner, the woman who plays her likes to break the mold in a very "Grey's" kind of way. "Originally, I knew very little about this character other than the fact that she supposedly had an affair," says Walsh, who joined toward the end of the show's debut half-season. "My only job was to rain on Derek and Meredith's parade ... but on 'Grey's,' you never do know what's going to happen next. "And then I think a lot of people [behind the scenes of the show] became a tad ... concerned that women throughout the country would stone me." Quite the contrary. In fact, as the new season opens on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 9 p.m., the question on many fans' minds is, will Derek - aka "Dr. McDreamy" - come to his senses and choose the complex Addison over the now-seen-as-somewhat-whiny Meredith Grey? "[We've] shown a tender side to Addison - her human side as well as her professional one," says Walsh about her character's appeal. "Originally, I think more teenage girls rooted for Meredith, but older women and men sort of identified with the struggles Derek and Addison [were going through]. The Shepherds are seemingly great people who are really trying to make it work by hanging in there." In last spring's season two finale, as Derek and Meredith emerge from a particularly risqué moment in a supply closet - only legally blind viewers would have missed what color underwear Meredith had on under her cocktail dress - Addison stands in the hospital corridor with Meredith's current boyfriend (guest star Chris O'Donnell), sad and horrified. Who will wind up with whom is left up in the air. Scenes such as these - along with Walsh's likability - are making many root for an Addison/Derek reunion, and are helping to make the show a smash. By the end of last season, it was drawing a bigger audience than its Sunday-night lead-in, "Desperate Housewives." And not even "ER" makes medicine so sexy. The show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, has given that old chestnut genre the medical drama an infusion of sex appeal, with some extra brainpower to boot. Viewers love the personal and professional crises of Seattle Grace's residents and staff, and an army of female McDreamy fans have risen up to give Dempsey a career lift. The fact that producers called on Walsh to further quicken the show's pulse was a shock to the 38-year-old Tucson native, one of five siblings raised in an Irish/Italian Catholic home. The only performer in the bunch, she attended the University of Arizona and did regional theater before moving to Chicago to study at the Piven Theatre Workshop - run by "Entourage" cast member Jeremy Piven's parents, who also taught John and Joan Cusack and Lili Taylor, among others. And though Walsh studied drama, she remembers telling everyone within earshot that her break would come via comedy. They should have listened: In New York in the '90s, Walsh was a member of an improv group called Burn Manhattan, and, in 1997, joined "The Drew Carey Show." "'Drew Carey' was my first sitcom, and I remember a director stopping me as I was about to make an entrance [on stage] and asking, 'Kate, you know to hold for the laughs, right?'" she says with a smile. "Of course I knew! That's like saying, 'You do know to keep your eyes open when you talk?'" After more TV comedies (HBO's "Mind of the Married Man," Norm MacDonald's "The Norm Show") and filming Will Ferrell's 2005 soccer-parent goof "Kicking and Screaming," Walsh signed on to "Grey's Anatomy." "Kate has succeeded in making Addison very sympathetic, which was not initially the easiest thing to do," says one of the show's executive producers, Betsy Beers. "Her comedic talent has helped add another dimension to the character. And she has no fear of taking chances." Walsh has made Addison essential to the DNA of "Grey's." The reaction to Addison and Derek was so strong, in fact, that producers junked scenes Walsh and Dempsey had already filmed, fearing that they might overpower the Derek/Meredith story line. "Patrick and I have so much fun together, it was frustrating for us [to have those scenes cut] - because we were starting to feel like we were in a miserable marriage," Walsh says. "It's very hard to play [an unhappy couple]. It's challenging for us, whether these two characters are going to work things out. We were both like, 'C'mon, let us have some fun! Let us connect!' " Source: New York Daily News - TV and Radio - Dr. Strained Love Comment... Where is PK chemistry? Patrick is frustrated because they cut Addeks scenes? Shonda cut this amazing chemistry? Why? I not bashing Kate Walsh. I liked her and I appreciate Addison but between her and Shonda Rhimes I believe to Shonda. She's a great writer and if she saw this chemistry I don't think she cut their scenes. | |||

| Master Fan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I think she meant she was frustrated, I dont think that Patrick ever liked his married story line and he was so frustrated with it by the end of the season he was glad he and mer had sex. I hate to bash on KW but i am gonna, but her link at that time was her only link to the show, if she didn't have that she'd be out, that was then even she has said now that she wants out of the marriage now her link to the show will probably be the mark line and the fact that people have warmed to her, well i havent!! I have only seen friendship chem not the exciting romantic passion ellen/pat, mer/der have. Patrick says he loves working with ellen quite frequently, never said anything about kw, not saying he doesn't but never heard anything about it. A lot of the scenes cute i i believe was just friendship chem not romanyic. PD was never frustrated i believe about the lack of addeck scenes he was frustrated with the whole storyline and i think he wanted out of it, he said he was relieved when he and meredith did the dirty, never heard him complain about the lack of addeck scenes. I think he likes working with ellen cause they can connect great on their personal and acting basis, they compliment each other they use their eyes to portay their emotions KW is a good comedy actress but i think she isn't of the range that PD and EP are as dramatic actors! | |||

| Sarcasm.... "Montgomery's Anatomy" I'm repetitive but I don't think the writers cut many Addeks scenes because they are better than MD couple. Kate Walsh is a beautiful woman and probably many people see GA for her but many others (a large part) see this show for MD couple and for the other characters. If Addek couple was better, Shonda changed the storyline. | |||

| Master Fan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I dont think people take into account the number of fans who dont have access or dont go ontot message boards i mean come on not everyone has access maybe addecks like to express their love on message boards while mer/der's just go with the flow!! I agree if addeck was the better couple she would have changed the show but from what it looks like in the promos its back to mer/der and addeck is over with!! Shonda is the ultimate mer/der shipper she wont have her couple away from each other for that long only a season which she has already done. I think mer/der will be together this season, im an eternal optimistic!! | |||

| The real question is that Kate said that the writers cut many DA scene because they have a great chemistry and they ruined MD couple... Patrick and Kate forced themselves to act a bad marriage because they have a great chemistry... Sincerly, if a couple have a chemistry, the people saw it in all moments (bad or good). | |||

| I loved all MD scenes, especially the angst scenes (for example I loved their scene in the ep.224 when they fight because Derek called her ...). When a couple have chemistry you always see it. ![]() Last edited by Gio Gio : 09-10-2006 at 05:19 AM. | |||
