Seriously, what happened to him? Now (and by now I mean since....S3) he's like this serious middle-aged neurosurgeon.
He used to be fun and cheerful and funny. And he used to make naughty jokes and tease Mer.... I really miss S1 Der

well I think in S1, Derek had nothing from the past coming back to haunt him, I mean the things that happened since surely affected him.

yeah there isn't much surprise about that if you think about all the things that happened to him.

yeah its pretty realistic!

not the biggest fan of the scenes above, which is probably part of the reason they're out of the survivor already

A comment I found from Matt roush (TVGuide Magazine) around the time of the finale

Matt Roush: I’m with you. One of the things I’ve always liked about Meredith, and Ellen Pompeo’s performance, is how she doesn’t act or even really look like the typical giddy-in-love romantic heroine. There’s something off about her, and the more we get to know about her the more we understand why, and it made sense for the show to make the course of her and Derek’s true love bumpy (though maybe not with so many artificial hurdles). But this season, they were eventually together and happy, and that state of being doesn’t necessarily require a traditional wedding. (Meredith in a bridal gown is always a good go-to place for a laugh.) I’ve been getting a lot of brutal and bitter mail from those who feel betrayed and violated by the way their wedding storyline played out, but I’ve never seen these two happier than they were in the final episodes of the season (traumas aside), and they sold it to me. So for now I’m at peace with them, and couldn’t agree more than just because they’re happy it doesn’t make them less interesting. The very opposite, actually.

But the S1 Derek was also there in S2, and even in S3...
Especially in the episodes where he wanted sex and where Mer was snoring

I guess the drowning and Mer pulling away really screwed him up ! Poor thing !

I miss him

That's why I watch S1 & 2 so much !

that much is true so its fun to see Derek NOT doing that, or Mer NOT doing that in s5.. Growth people!
