Have i posted this article sorry if i have, well in this article which feature Ellen and Patrick this is what they have to say about the mer/der situation:

Meredith has to follow her heart, and she knew she didn`t really love Finn the way she loved Derek. And really, Dempsey is such a star. I mean, what girl wouldn`t pick him?"

So basically it says their gonna be together well forever there just gonna have conflict from inside their relationship not outside which is fine cause all realtionships have internal conflict and it'll keep them interesting!
