I think he just died of very simple causes.. Just hart failure or something like that. I don't think we'll get something special about his father's dad.

well, at least there should be something that brings out Der's attention that has resulted in what he is today.

I don't think it would be heart failure they would choose for Derek's Dad. I do think if they touch upon what he died of it will have something to do with the brain. If anything to connect it back to Derek and his desire to become a neurosurgeion. Who knows?

It would be too cheesy for me honestly to have his dad have some kind of neuro problem..

And his interest for neurosurgery?! I don't think that necessarily has to do with a background, or something you experienced. It could be merely that he's fascinated by it.

Do we already know that they are gonna focus on Derek's dad? Or are we just all speculating what kind of storyline Derek will have?

It wouldn't be too cheesy if written properly. I just totally have Derek's Dad dying of a brain hemorrage or seizure or something neuro because of all the great fan fiction I've read. Every single one of them has Derek's Dad dying like that. Those stories are so great they are stuck in my head, lol!

Maybe Derek's Dad was a doctor? A surgeon? A neurosurgeon and that's why he wanted to be one. I'm thinking their family is linked to the medical field somehow since Nancy was a doctor and Kathleen was mentioned as a psychiatrist. Definitely in the genes somehow.

Total speculation and wishful thinking on our parts. Most of us really want to know more about Derek in S5 and what makes him tick. Along with this we'd like to find out more about / meet his family.

Ok, I thougt I missed something. I really like to know more of Derek too but I don't really like the daddy speculation. Don't ask me what else could be a nice storyline (I'm not really good at making up a story) I leave that to you guys

the whole Derek's dad thing is just something we came up, it may not even happen in the GA S5 plotline...

About the Dad issue: It seems alot of the characters have had their dad's die in front of them or earlier in life when mentioned. Sure it would be a good common ground for Mer/Der and yes I agree with the whole maybe-dereks-dad-died-so-derek-could-save-people aspect...who knows right? It would be a good story line.

~ Meeting Derek's Family (sisters, mother)
~ Finding out what the cause is of his insecurities (professionally)
~ Relationship with his dad, and what caused his death
