2.02 - Enough Is Enough (No More Tears)
Richard: "Punching out people on my surgical floor. My head of neurosurgery is punching out people on my surgical floor."
Addison: "Put some ice on your hand."
Derek: "My hand is fine."
Richard: "Put the damn ice on your two million dollar a year hand. Now someone tell me what the hell happened."
Addison: [pauses] "That was Mark."
Richard: "Who’s Mark?"
Addison: "He and Derek used to work together back in New York. And they... we... we were all close friends. Until Derek found us in bed together."
Richard: "Did you put your weight behind it?"
Derek: "Yes sir."
Richard: [pauses] "Well, alright then."
2.18 - Yesterday
Richard: There's never a good place to hide in this hospital.
Derek: I’m trying to get perspective. It feels enormous, like it’s all- I- I- I can’t get perspective.
Richard: My niece’s cancer has come back. She’s 17 years old and she’s gonna die. (pauses) ... Plus ... 25 years ago I had a secret affair with ... Ellis Grey. (Derek looks up at him at this) And today I find out that my wife knew the entire time. (Derek sighs and sits back into the couch) There was no secret. And she stayed with me.
Derek: I respect him, you know? Dr. Burke, I- I respect him. He’s decent. He’s honorable. An arrogant ass who just hogs the O.R and thinks he’s God but … he’s decent and he’s honorable. I respect him. He’s one of the foremost cardiothoracic surgeons in the country and I’ve gotta just ... It’s his hand. I can not get perspective. I can’t do this. I can’t be responsible for him.
Richard: Preston is an honorable and decent man but Derek, so are you. (Derek just shakes his head) You are honorable and decent and you’re too honorable and decent to run. (Derek just remains silent and Richard looks at the coffee cup in his hands) You don’t know how much I wish this was bourbon.
2.25 - Deterioration of the Fight or Flight Response
Derek: "Can I ask you a personal question? Why did you leave Meredith's mother?"
Richard: "I could have left Adele. I could have gone away with Ellis. But I would have had so much baggage, so much guilt. Ellis couldn't see it, but I wasn't... I would have never made her happy. Not like she was certain to be happy. I was a better man for walking away. I loved her enough to walk away."
3.04 - What I Am
Richard: "You're blocking my light."
Derek: "Think of it as a basic corner stich."
Richard: "I can figure out how to sew on my own buttons, thank you. I am a surgeon. Oh for God's sake! You sew this on for me, and I'll get rid of Addison and Sloan."
Derek: "Really?"
Richard: "No."
3.06 - Let The Angels Commit
Richard: What the hell is this? Oh this is not ok, I have a hospital to run. And Derek, what the hells the matter with you man? We've all been there.
Callie: We said that.
Richard: We've all had tough losses.
Owen: He knows that.
Richard: We show up the next day, and we try and save the next life.
Callie: Yeah we covered that too.
Richard: Ok, what about this? Nothing we do can stop death. We can hold it at bay every now and then, but everyone dies. And that's not on us.
Derek: I took a pregnant woman in for a simple surgery, and I botched it. That is on me. I should feel badly about that. And you, you should feel badly that while I was out here, you sent Meredith out here expecting a ring. Why would you do that? Why in gods name, would you do that?
Richard: I was trying to help. She didn't wanna come. She wanted to leave you out here alone, I was trying to help Derek.
Derek: You were trying to help yourself. Not me. Yourself! I hit the ring in the woods. In the woods. You destroyed me.
5.18 - Stand By Me
Derek: Get out.
Richard: No.
Derek: GET OUT! RICHARD! GET OUT!
Richard: Look, I've destroyed lives before. Several in fact, and yours is not one of them. Now, I sent the woman you love out here to help you. I sent the woman who loves you, out here, to bring you back to your life. If you ruin it with her, that's on you. I don't accept it. You're scared, you're drunk. You don't know which way is up. You threw a punch at your best friend, and you threw a ring at Meredith, and now you wanna throw me out. I'm not accepting it. Because, I'm older than you, and I've been where you are. You've been drunk for a few day, I was drunk for years. And I know you're gonna need at least one friend when you decide to come out of that hole you're digging. I hope you come out of it soon, and I'll be here when you do.
Derek: I don't think I can get her back.
Richard: Did you call her?
Derek: What am I gonna say?
Richard: I had an affair for years. When Adele found out, somehow she took me back. You can make your way back from anything.
5.18 - Stand By Me
Derek: You just have to give her some room. You two have history.
Richard: I apologized.
Derek I know, and it's loaded.
Richard: Look, she keeps yelling at me that I'm not her father. Well, I am not. I fell in love with her mother, that's all I did.
Derek: Her mother never got over you. And she's not gonna...
Richard: Oh, that's not my fault. Look I was young, lots of people have affairs. They have affairs and they don't... Look what Ellis did after I left, that's on Ellis. And I'm trying to run a hospital here.
Derek: She's doing the best she can Richard.
Richard: Well, her best isn't good enough. If any other resident... If any other resident pulled the crap she did today. She is still here because of my history with you. That's it. That's the only reason.
Derek: You keep saying you're not her father, but you... ok... you know, since we're talking. You're the most professional guy I know. Most level headed. Except when it comes to Meredith Grey. You gave me hell. You know, you weren't gonna give me Chief because I was dating Meredith Grey. You told her about the ring, you sent her out to the woods to bring me back. That's not running a hospital. You paged her to your office to try and address us. You paged her again today for Thatcher. You have history with her. You keep saying you're not her father, but the way you act, you consider her family. For what it's worth.
