I could see that. It would make sense to me because we have seen Jim/Pam as most likely wanting to go different directions in the future. More so Pam at the moment since we really don't know where Jim's heart truly lies. But, spinning them off would make room for them to go their different career paths and us still be able to see them. But, spinning off the two of them would be a huge part of The Office that we'd lose. I don't know that they would do that.

I don't know that this curveball has anything to do with the spinoff since the spinoff isn't happening for awhile. But, very interesting comment!! Thanks for bringing it over.

Sorry for the dp but I saw this on Chapter 12 and thought I would bring it over for spinoff possibilities and see what people think of them.

a new office

Yesterday, NBC confirmed that they are greenlighting a spinoff of “The Office.” However, other details are not yet available. In fact, they do not even have a premise for the new show yet, just a commitment from Greg Daniels that it will be quality. So, while it’s on the schedule, if the creative team can’t come up with a good premise, then it may end up being sidelined. However, the lack of ideas has not stopped people from speculating who might be spun off into a new show. So, I figure I will speculate too, only I’ll go character by character, and their odds:

Michael Scott (Steve Carrell): No way, no how. Impossible.

Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson): Rainn Wilson is talented enough to carry his own show. However, Dwight is not lead character material. Plus, he is too central to the current US Office.

Jim Halpert (John Krazinski) and Pam Beesley (Jenna Fischer): Both of these could be strong spin off characters. And, a change of venue would fit each of their story archs quite well. In fact, once the current run of the US Office is over, they would make a very good spinoff. But, like Dwight, they are too important to the current show to move.

Ryan Howard (BJ Novak)– During the original rumors of a spinoff, Dwight was considered to be the number 1 candidate. Now, it is Ryan. I think that since he is a writer, I don’t think he will be moved. Novak is a stronger actor than gets displayed on The Office, but it’s hard to say if he can be the lead guy.

Andy Benard (Ed Helms)– This, I think, is the strongest candidate. Helms has simply been brilliant as Andy. But, with Dwight, there just isn’t enough room for him. The logical move would be to have him become Assistant Regional Manager at another branch, and bring in a big name to star next to him.

Stanley Hudson(Leslie Baker), Phyllis Lapin (Phyllis Smith), Angela Smith (Angela Kinsey), Oscar (Oscar Nunez), Kevin Malone(Brian Baumgartner), Meredith Palmer (Kate Flannery)– All of these are good characters, but not strong enough to spin a show off of. The rumor is that a few characters may go to the new show, and any of these could work in that kind of role. But, move too many around, and you mess with the chemistry of the original.

Creed (Creed Bratton)–I think they should move this guy. If you watch the deleted scence, he always has AMAZING scenes, and they get cut. He is possibly the funniest character on the show, but definately someone you couldn’t build a series around. Move him, and give him more time.

Kelly Kapur (Mindy Kaling)–She is rumored to go to the spinoff if Ryan goes. Again, she is one of the writers, so I don’t see it happening.

Toby Flenderson (Paul Liberstein)–I think he would be a good spinoff character, though he would need to be part of a strong ensemble cast. But, he is also one of the writers, and I think he stays put.

The Warehouse Crew– It makes less sense to move any of them, though Darryl has been mentioned in the Ryan/Kelly scenario.

Jan Levinson (Melora Hardin)– This makes sense. Her character has been portrayed as both competent and later crazy, so a show with her putting her life together can give the elements needed in a show.

Karen Fillipelli (Rashida Jones)– She’s already been established in the Utica Branch of Dunder Mifflin. And, she’s already tried to recruit on Scraton person. So, who knows.

If it were me, I would take Andy and Creed and put them on the new show, and have everyone else stay put. I would bring in another star to headline the show (Will Arnett has been mentioned).

What are your ideas?

I'd like the idea of Karen or Andy. The others are too much important IMO for the current show and for me).

Maybe Jan is a good character for the spin off too, but I'd like to see her staying in OUR The Office.

Someone knows if Unhitched is going on for another season or not? If that will go on, Rashida should leave it to make the Karen spin-off.

I haven't heard anything officially about Unhitched, but I'm doubting it will come back.

The people at "The Office" need help! The people at NBC need help! They've gone ahead and ordered a spinoff of the show and - as best as the press could tell - don't have the slightest damn idea what it's going to be about.

Or do they? Some unnamed source - not saying who - got a copy of this top-secret memo from Ben Silverman, which he/she has sent to my colleague Andy Edelstein and me. Personally, I think some of these ideas are idiotic - others, not so bad. You be the judge.

MEMO: To Jeff Zucker, Greg Daniels, et al.

RE: Office Spin-Off

FROM: Silverman

We need a plan, gang. Need it fast.Super Bowl's fast approaching. I've cooked up these thoughts for a spin-off. Need reax pronto. B.S.

"Dwight Schrute: The Beet Generation:" It turns out that Dwight's twin brother WASN'T reabsorbed in the wound, but was actually born, grew up, and lived in the farmhouse antic. He's a weirder version of Dwight - watches re-runs of "Good Times!" over and over - and his name is Dwight too. Anyway, Dwight returns to run the farm full time with Dwight and Moses; they grow beets and pot.

"Jan's Plan:" After the lawsuit, etc. Jan moves out - the thing with Michael just wasn't gonna work out and she needed to restart her life. She moves to Altoona to start her own paper company - direct competitor to Dunder Mifflin - and many hilarious scenes whereby Jan and Michael compete, eventually get back together again, etc. Endless cross-promotion/product placement possibilities.

"Michael: After Dark:" With his love life back in the toilet, Michael's a swinging bachelor again. This spin-off explores what he does at night - hitting Scranton's many hot-spots, occasionally getting to Altoona where he runs into Jan...

"Touched by an Angela:" Angela's hot! That's right. You heard me. She's hot - a lusty, luscious lovely babe in the after-hours. Plus, she gets pregnant - a shocker! Front page coverage in the NY papers, or at least PA papers, is guaranteed. Angela Lansbury promises to do a cameo. Endless cross-promotion/product placement possibilities.

"Love Booze Cruise:" Captain Jack is back! And this time, they're having a rockin' great time on Lake Wallenpaupak, where the booze runs freely and so does the love. Michael and gang return for another office party and...Sorry, not sure where this goes from here.

"Andy and Angela:" You've always wanted to know "what if...?" What IF Andy and Angela "get it on." What IF they're a couple. Here's the show! They get married, have a nice home life, have baby ("little Andy"), start new jobs in different offices...HILL-arious situational comedy ensues. Endless cross-promotion/product placement possibilities.

"Missus...Missuss Jones:" Rashida Jones is back. She's the manager of a new office paper supply company in Scranton, and does everything in her power to scuttle the Jim/Pam thing. (Plus, I think R's tight with Foo Fighters, Maroon 5 in real life - cameos! cameos! cameos!) Plus, Endless cross-promotion/product placement possibilities.

"Creed:" Agreed, it's a tough sell to advertisers. We do a whole show based on Creed! There's so much possibility here. Who really is Creed? What does he do in his off-hours? Does he really live in Toronto (so he can stay on the dole in the Canada?) What really happened to his missing toe? Did he really run cults? Has he been in jail? There are many possibilities here, though still working out love interest angle . (Meredith? Not sure. Just spit-balling here. Open to ideas) Plus have already talked with Creed Bratton's agent; think we can get him cheap. Endless cross-promotion/product placement possibilities.

[Note to reader: We can't vouch for authenticity of this memo; may be another one of those hoaxes that are perpetrated on the Internets. But we had to share anyway.]

I seriously doubt that Jim will be in the spin-off. For one thing, they're apparently looking for a different actor to be the head of the show. I've read that Will Arnett is a possibility. And for another thing, you can"t have "The Office" without Jim. And Jim just isn"t Jim without Pam or Dwight.

My gut is that none of the core 4 will leave (Michael, Dwight, Pam, Jim).

I love Will Arnett so if he was involved in the spinoff somehow that would be awesome!

I just don't know if the show would survive without one of the core 4 characters. I mean, would Jim/Pam shippers still watch if one of them left?

I think if would have to be both of them (Pam/Jim) to leave and I can see it happening at some point if they both want to do different things with their lives.......it seems more likely that would be at the end of the show though.

Yeah but as much as I LOVE Jim and Pam, could they really carry their own show? It would only be a matter of time before the writers would have to put stupid obstacles in their paths. JMO

Ooh Will Arnett? Anything with him is hilarious, so that would be awesome if he was somehow involved.

But other than that I'm still iffy about the whole spin-off thing.

I just don't get this. Why is this happening? To make a spinoff of a show that's both successful and still on the air just comes across as greedy. Are they being secretive by not giving details, or do they really have no idea what they're doing? Maybe it will be great, but I'm seriously skeptical about this. I love this show so much, and I'm nervous about what will happen. With more hour-long episodes and a spinoff, I'm wondering if we're getting too much of a good thing.
