Great thread idea!

Check this out:

Two of my friends from here and I started this group not too long ago. If anyone wants to join or know more about us, PM me. It's a beta group where everyone contributes, only we don't do fanfic. But we do all other forms of writing.

Cold-Blooded Piece of Toast 08-01-2003 03:23 PM

I would like someone to beta my Harry Potter fanfic. It's a one-shot. Rated R. It is femslash and has some sexuality between females.

If I haven't scared everyone off. Is anyone interested in looking over it for me?

Gabrielle

So glad I asked it to e-mail me replies, I never remember to return to threads.

CTM, good for you for starting a beta group. Great minds think alike, eh? I'll be sure to stop by and post if it lets me (I don't have a blog account).

Should I call you Toast or Gabrielle? Either way, I'd love to look over your fic! My e-mail is spinereader@yahoo.com, feel free to send it on over.

Thanks. Yeah, looks like. You can drop us a line through the comments feature on the blog, or you can join www.blogger.com and we can make you an Inkling, if you'd like to join us.

There's no beta group, to my knowledge, for fanfics on there though (hint, hint ).

You know, you said it wasn;t for fanfic and somehow that went completely out of my head. You ought to have a catagory for that, it's so hard to find a beta. I should know, I've been wanting one for my anime story (Cowboy Bebop) for months. Maybe I ought to do a google search, see if it turns up anything related to fanfic betas.

Ooooh, I really love doing beta work!

Fandom: Alias
Length: Any length
Rating: Well, probably no higher than PG-13.
Things I look for: Everything! I studied creative writing and english in college so everything you would expect...spelling, grammar, tense, point of view, tone, characterization, believable storyline, realistic dialogue. Don't worry, I give only constructive criticism. I am grateful for all the constructive criticism I was offered throughout my education and acknowledge that it only made me a better writer so I am anxious to repay the favor whenever possible. So...this is kinda off topic, since I don't actually need a beta (nor am I writing a fanfic, for once in my life it's my own) but...I really need help, and can't figure out who to ask. So...if anyone could help me with this little naming problem, I'd be much obliged. See, the story I'm working on is semi-autobiographical, and one of the 'characters' goes by his last name, but shortened. For instance, the real person's name is Harvey, but Harv for short. So, I need a fictional name along the same vein. I just can't seem to come up with a fitting last name that works as a first name for my character. Sorry to be off-topic, but I wasn't sure who else to ask. Just post back here if you can help, I'll check. Thanks much!

I love to nitpick -- I mean, beta.

Fandoms I'll beta: Harry Potter and other books (Dark is Rising Sequence, The Outsiders), Buffy, and The Tribe.
Length/Rating: Up to R, I suppose. It depends on why it's rated that highly.
Things I'll look for: Mostly spelling and grammar, because I'm pretty anal about that, but also dialogue, characterizations, flow, etc.
How to contact me: PM me or e-mail me at ski-ming.bitch@email.com.
See my stuff: I'm on FanFiction.net as Ski-Ming Bitch.

Length/Rating: I have no preferance. G - to NC. Slash, het, whatever length.
Things I'll look for: Spelling, Grammar, Characterization, etc. And I can help with formating
How to contact me: PM is fine, or email me @ mandieos@hotmail.com with the subject line 'FF Beta'

Lizzie, why don't you do something else starting with an H, like Harleson(sp?) and shorten it to Harry? Sorry if that wasn't quite what you were asking, I wasn't sure.

PsychoLizzie 08-13-2003 07:53 PM

I'll beta! I love to read and I'm an English major, so I'm pretty sure I could not suck at it.
Fandoms: Roswell, Dawson's Creek, and Harry Potter
Length/Rating: Any
Things I look for: Everything-spelling, grammar, formatting, plot, characterization, etc.
Contact Info: email at dreamgirlsoul0385@hotmail.com

Also, about my naming problem, I kinda want a last name that shortens into something that isn't usually a name. My only idea so far is Wicklein and call him Wick. Although it probably doens't matter much anyway because I can't write. I have an inspiration problem. And I don't know where to begin. And I can only write Roswell fanfic. But I'm trying to quit.

Sterling & Emerald 08-14-2003 09:43 PM

What about Wilkenson, he could be Wilk, Kens or Sonny!

Inspiration is rotten, you get it, start a fic, get into it, and there is goes. Then you just have to sit around waiting and hoping it comes back. As for writing only Roswell fic, I've been there. I think most are that way, it only changes when you watch/read something else and a bunny hops out at you.

To get a topic going, what are some do and don'ts for betas? I have only a few, but I'd love to hear more.

1. Be constructive, not insulting. Which means 'this sentence sounds a bit clumsy, you might want to consider altering it' is helpful, where as 'gah, it's so cluttered, no one could read this! Fix it up' is still helpful, but rather cruel.

2. This should go without saying, but if something comes up and you can't beta or it'll be a long time before you can work on the story, tell the alpha! Don't just toss it aside or send it back uncorrected. I've known people that have those that done to them, and it must be very frusterating.

3. Take as much time as needed on the fic, but please try not to take up more time than you have to. Often alphas will want to put up their story as soon as possible.

Any other tips? And for that matter, any tips for alphas?

PsychoLizzie 08-14-2003 11:27 PM

Hmm...Wilk...I kinda like that...I'll have to see what my friend thinks of it. The problem is, I don't want to write fic of any sort. I want to write something original. Fanfic is my crutch because I don't think I'm good enought to come up with my own characters. I have this one fic that's about 50-60 pages long now that I forced myself to quit writing because I'm quitting al things Roswell cold turkey, or I'm supposed to be...so far it's not going so well. At least I don't spend nearly as much time on Roswell-related things now. Sorry to ramble Off-Topic, again. I really apologize. I'll go now...

kaiyote 10-01-2003 05:47 PM

...I was actually wondering if some one could beta/look over/correct an essay I'm writing. If you're interesting or anything like that email me at vardametwen@yahoo.com.
