Fan Fiction Annoyances #2: What Irks You?

Have you ever come across a fan fic that you think could have been written better?

As writers, we are always interested in becoming a better storyteller. Do you have any tips for your fellow writers?

What words do you find commonly misspelled? What type of punctuation errors have you found recently? This thread is for anything and everything related to tips for storytelling. What are common mistakes you find in fan fiction? Does the plot not make sense? And if so, what ways do you think fan fic writers can become better at making their plots more believable.

While describing any tips or annoyances that you find with fan fiction, please refrain from mentioning which stories you have noticed with problems. Every author always has room for improvement.

A common annoyance mentioned here is none other than incorrect grammar usage, particularly with 'there', 'their' and they're'. So take this quiz and see how you go!

9/10 and I have no idea which one I missed!

I hate reading the ones where people violate the "if you open it, then close it" rule. You know the one, people walk through closed doors, see through walls, etc.

Well at least you learned something. That's always good.

I don't think I'd even notice most of the time if that happened in a fic I was reading. I really only notice those things when I'm beta-ing.

No club t-shirts? Pfft, laaame

Since ranting is what I do best:

1. Names.

I don't care how perfectly amazing, exotic and unique your Mary Sue OC is, there's no way in hell a sane parent would call their kid Shadow Mist.
And you, very specific Bones author (who also sadly crossed over to HIMYM fandom... go away, we don't want you ): it doesn't matter who's Angela's father or how whipped Jack is... I really doubt they'd call their kids Styx and Springsteen! (not to mention, Styx? Really? Me thinks you've never heard them )
Are you people on some kind of medication? Just because celebrities call their poor kids Peanuts and Pilots doesn't make these "names" any less idiotic.

2. I've ranted about this before, but it's always worth mentioning. A couple's happiness doesn't necessarily mean wedding and babies. I'm totally serious. There are perfectly happy child free couples and there are perfectly happy unmarried couples and there are couples who want both, etc. Stop projecting!

3. Summaries

Dead fluff. is not a summary... I don't know what exactly it can be and I'm not risking clicking to find out, but believe me, summary it ain't

How about writing things they want you to notice a gazillion times and it's (look it's!) always bolded, highlighted and underlined. Oh yeah, and all caps.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?

I have come across a fic where all the quotes where in bold....

Harry said: "I have to get my t-shirt."
Unfortunately Susan hadn't seen it.
"I don't know where it could be," she said.
I'm not sure about punctuation here...

I mean, really, I am not freaking blind. I, and I am sure many others as well, are very familiar with the ""-characters and know what they mean...

Do, I agree about the names. I usually try to find names that mean something and thus define the character. But I believe we're spoiled because in Germany you aren't allowed to give certain names (I would love to name my child Pumuckel, though....), but my host family's child is called Stone. So I'm used to the craziness.

Eliza I have also read a few fics where sometimes people would just appear and disappear, with no mention of them entering or leaving the room. Or someone using a blow dryer even though I have never seen a power outlet in a park....

And finally, Rhi, thanks for the new thread.

and I only bold the names so people who only check for answers to their names/posts realize I am talking to them

How glad I am I don't read Bones or HIMYM fanfic at this point. Although completely ridiculous names have apparently been making their way into actual books recently. Said book was written like fanfic though so I'm not entirely sure that it does in fact count.

And ha, Styx! Makes me think of that T7S episode.

That would be so annoying Lynn. Did you manage to get past the first sentence? There's no way I'd have the patience or inclination to read a fic that had bolded font every time someone spoke.

Rhi, are you talking about a certain 4th installment of a very popular book series? I mean, I swear to God, if someone gives their child the name of a sea monster they simply have to be soft in the head....
And I actually couldn't get past the first paragraph I really tried, but I simply couldn't. I mean, people were talking a lot in this fic and thus there was tons of direct speech... worse than anything I've ever had before...

Doesn't count, Rhi! It was a published fanfic to begin with and I better stop here because I absolutely hate these "books"...

OMG was that the episode where everybody kept making fun of Eric because he went to Styx concert?

Don't get me started on weird names. I see more than my fair share at work. I swear some people don't realize they're naming a person and not a puppy.

Sometimes some of the reviews I get completely baffle me.

Agreed! Whenever I read a fanfiction where the main characters have odd names, I just can't stop thinking that if it were real life people would be teasing them constantly about it, or at least show surprise when they are first introduced.

This is sort of obnoxious - I guess? - but I'm highly annoyed at the people who go into movies-based-on-books fandoms - I'm looking at you, Chronicles of Narnia fandom - and don't ever bother reading the books. You don't have to like it better but when you don't even know *what* happened to Susan in book 7 and don't say your Susian/Caspian forever-and-ever fanfiction is AU then I don't know what to say. It's nice when stories that ignore whole books of canon are labeled as AU, you know? If you have them have hot sex when she's still in Narnia I don't care but it's not going to be happily ever after unless she comes back to the fold after Book 7!

I am talking about a certain 4th installment of a very popular book series. I read the spoilers a few days before it came out and after I'd finished choking with a mixture of laughter and disbelief, I just couldn't believe something like that was actually published.

We could seriously pick apart that thing with 1000 different fanfic annoyances. My number one would be the complete disregard for human biology.

Yes. Then they were all secretly at the Styx concert.

I hate if someone doesn't know the fandom properly too. Watching the movies is definitely not the same as reading the books.
