IMPORTANT announcement about direct posting of fics

Hi guys,
After an open vote and some discussion, we are now implementing the changes to the direct posting rule. Detailed guidelines are set out below.

I've changed the post in the rules thread about 'no direct posting', but thought it's probably a good idea to start a separate thread about this change so more posters can become aware of it. Please feel free to use this thread for questions and opinions. You might want to check out the voting and discussion thread first, because some FAQs have already been asked and answered. ***
Directly posting fanfics
Fanfic authors are encouraged to post sections of their fics on this board, on the appropriate fandom thread or 'shipper thread.

Please remember, however, that due to technical considerations, we can only allow you to post excerpts up to 1000 words in length. If your story is significantly longer than 1000 words, please use direct posting as a 'teaser' or introduction to your fic, and provide a link to it in your post. If your fic is a short story, feel free to post it in its entirety, and don't fret if it's a little over 1000 words.

Please also remember that with direct posting:
- do not use expletives (they will be caught by Fan Forum's automatic filters anyway)
- do not post any fics with explicit sexual descriptions
- only post your own fics unless you have the author's written permission

Have fun posting!

This is for original fiction too or just fan fiction?

We've got an Original Fiction thread if you want to post original fics. Same rules apply as for fanfic.

I've already taken advantage of the new rule. I'm glad there is a maximum word limit, though.

So we only post a snippet of our fic *if they are long* and then post a link to where you can read the rest?

I'm confused

PuReDrEaMeR05 , I'm not sure what you're confused about, as your summary seems to have grasped the concept. Perhaps your confusion stems from the fact that you're not aware of how we used to 'post' fics on this board? Direct posting is a new development and before this change, we weren't allowed to directly post fics at all. We needed to host our stories at a site such as www.fanfiction.net and post the link to it here.

After the change, we can now directly post fics, but in the case of longer fics (most fics over 1000 words) a compromise was needed. You can use this board as a thousand-word 'pimping space' for your story, but you still need to host it on a particular site if it's longer than 1000 words.

Then, I would just post my 1000 or less word post, here, correct?

This is just an announcement thread. You should post your 1000 words on a relevant thread. So for example if you've written a Spike/Buffy fic, you should post it on the Spuffy thread. Or, if you'd written original fiction, you should post it on the original fic thread. Please check if there is already a thread open for your fandom, and if there's not, feel free to start one. Question: If I direct post a fic, does it have to be on a thread on this Fanfiction board? (There's a Joey/Chandler shipper thread on the Couples board, where I would like to direct post a fic.)

Also: If the story has R-rated sexual material, but I only post a teaser snippet of PG-13 or less here, is it still all right to link to the complete R-rated story?

I'm afraid you can only do it on the fanfic board. That was part of the reason we pushed direct posting through in the first place - because fanfic threads were popping up on other boards, which wasn't previously allowed. We discussed with the admin staff and reached a compromise - you can directly post your fics on this board, while you still can post links on the other boards' fanfic threads.

Sorry about the inconvenience. If you're worried no one will see your fic if you post it here, can I suggest that you post a link to your direct post on the Couples board?

It's fine if you want to link to an R-rated story as long as nothing R-rated is actually being posted on the board.

Okay, thanks for explaining the rules.
