A/A: Action/adventure, focuses on fight scenes
Alt: Alternate version
A/N: Author's note
Angst: Heavy and sometimes depressing themes, with characters suffering emotionally (and sometimes physically)
AR: Alternate Reality
AT: Alternate timeline
AU: Alternate universe

B
Babyfic: Main characters adopt or raise children
Bed fic: Really bad fan fiction, often deliberately bad, and written to amuse
BDSM: Bondage domination sadism masochism
Beta: Edit and give feedback on a draft

C
Canon: Verifiable fact
C&C: Comments and criticism (feedback)
CC: Conventional couple
Challenge: game played in writing circles, creating something unusual and original
Character Death: Warning given that a main character dies
Con: Consensual
Crack!fic: characters are put in random, nonsensical situations, for humour
Crossover: characters from two or more story worlds are brought together

D
Dark: includes elements such as death, violence, betrayal, or loss
Death fic: One or more characters die
Denial fic: AU, written to avert tragic canonical events
Disclaimer: Information given at the top of the fic, may refer to ownership/non-ownership
Drabble: Technically a fic of exactly 100 words, although it is used more commonly for short fics of several hundred words
D/S: Dominance/Submission, with consent implied

E
ETA: Edited to add
Erotica: More tasteful sexual content, as opposed to porn

F
Fandom: Collective term for fans and their activities
Fanon: A fan-created fact or event widely accepted as canon, or a fact deemed to be unstated canon
Feedback: Comments by a reader of a story for the author. There are generally four types of feedback: Praise, constructive feedback, criticism and flames.
Femslash: Same-sex female relationship (also femmeslash)
Ficlet: Short one-shot, that is longer than a drabble
F/F: Relationship between 2 women
F/f: Relationship between 2 women where one (F) is an adult and the other (f) is underage
Flame: An insulting and rude comment often containing profanity aimed at a story or author. Nonconstructive.
Fluff: Light-hearted romance, cute

G
GAFF: God Awful Fan Fiction
Gary Stu: male version of a Mary Sue
Gen: General (non-romantic)
Genre: class or story e.g. sci-fi, romance, fantasy
GTM: Gratuitous touchy (tactile) moment

H
Half-drabble: Vignette 50 words long
H/C: Hurt/comfort, where one character is harmed (physically, emotionally) and another must save them or make them feel better
Het: Heterosexual, opposite sex relationship
HHJJ: Happy-happy-joy-joy ie. fluff

Mainstream: Unaltered canon version of a character
Mary Sue: Female character (usually) who is beautiful, has amazing skills/powers, has a love affair with a main character, and/or convinces characters to hook up; is often idealized and cliched
M/M: Relationship between 2 men
M/m: Relationship between 2 men where one (M) is an adult and the other (m) is underage
Moviefic: Story set in the continuity of a movie adaptation instead of the original source
Movieverse: Alternate continuity when a book/comic is made into a film
Mpreg: Male pregnancy

N
Non-con: Non-consensual
Non-shipper: Fan who opposes a popular pairing, preferring them non-romantically

O
OC: Original Character (character created specifically by the author)
OFC: Original female character
Original Fiction: author creates their own characters and context
OMC: Original male character
One-shot: Individual story, as opposed to a series
OOC: Out of character
OTP: One true pairing; characters that are "meant to be"
OT3: One true threesome
Outside POV: Written from the point of view of a minor character

P
Pairing: Two characters romantically or sexually involved
Pastiche: Imitates previous works of other writers, often satirically
Pimp: Shamelessly promote a fic (your own or someone else's)
Plotbunny: Concept for a story that doesn't really go anywhere, but you have to write it
POV: Point of view
Pre-series: Takes place prior to the timeframe of the series in question
PWP: Plot? what Plot? or Porn without plot

R
Rarepair: Pairing not usually seen in the fandom, quite a stretch
Ratings: Indicates what readers can expect e.g. with levels of language, sexuality, violence
Rec: Recommend a fic
Resfic: Resurrection fic, bringing a beloved, canon character back to life
Retcon: Retroactive Continuity; changing previously established facts in a work of serial fiction
RL: Real life
RPF: Real-people fiction
RPS: Real-people slash
R&R: Read and review
RR: Round Robin, story written in installments by various writers
RST: Resolved sexual tension
R/T: Rape/torture

S
Series: multiple, interconnected stories in sequential order
Shockfic: Involves death, pain, trauma inflicted on the characters (darkfic)
Ship: Relationship, pairing
SI: self-insertion; author writes themself into the story
Sillyfic: Lighthearted, usually short, for amusement and lift spirits when there is an abundance of angst fic being written
Slash: Same-sex pairing (characters are usually assumed to be straight in canon)
Smarm: Non-sexual displays of physical and/or emotional affection between characters
Smut: Sexual content / adult scenes
Specs: Speculative fiction, alternate term for science fiction
Songfic: song lyrics used to inspire the story, or used in the content of the story
Spoiler: Piece of information that gives away a plotpoint; may be a sample of the fic posted to entice readers
Stand alone: Single story, not part of a series

TBC: To be continued
Threesome: Three characters involved with each other, altogether
Top heavy: Story with an overly long title
Triangle: Three characters are involved with each other, but not altogether

U
Uber: New characters psychologically or physically resemble canon characters
UC: Unconventional couple
UF: Unnamed faction ie. slash
UGLI: Unwanted gratuitous love interest, character who interferes with a preferred ship
UST: Unresolved sexual tension

V
Verse: Added to any fandom title to indicate the canon work and world of the original creator
Vignette: Very short story, with a single period of time, event, relationship, etc., often with just one character (may involve internal dialogue)

W
Wangst: Woe-is-me misery
WAFF: Warm and fuzzy feeling; cute and sappy
Wank: Refers to self-important arrogance; alternatively, refers to sexual self-stimulation
WIP: Work in progress

/ : When separating two letters, means the story is about a romance between two characters whose names start with those letters
! : When used between an adjective and a noun, a cute way of connecting the two concepts
+ : Indicates a nonsexual friendship or family relationship between characters

American Movie Guidelines

Fiction Rated: G - Good clean fun for all ages.

Fiction Rated: PG - Mild implied sexual innuendo, mild bad words, or violence or serious (though not quite mature) topics.

Fiction Rated: PG-13 - Some violence, bad language, obvious sexual innuendo, implied sexual relations. Also may include some mature topics such as suicide, homosexuality, drug/alcohol advocacy, rape aftermath, details of childbirth, etc. depending on the mores of the fandom involved.

Fiction Rated: R - Just-short-of-explicit sex, graphic torture or violence, rape. Not recommended for minors.

Fiction Rated: NC-17 - Explicit erotica, excessively gory violence. Often illegal for underage readers.

Fiction Rated: X - Same as NC-17 but only in reference to sex. No longer used by some fandoms.

I was so confused when I first started reading fanfiction and didn't know any of the abbreviations. Thanks for this thread, now I have someplace to go if there's a term I don't recognize

Thanks for posting the ratings system, I've always wondered what they stood for but I was too lazy to look myself. I'm still on the NC-17 types of ratings
