Your First Fan Fic... Ah, Memories

Today I got bored and I went back to my old, old, OLD fan fic site (from when I was in eighth grade) and read this story I had posted up there. Wow, it was AWFUL! My friends and I were all the main girl characters, and it was just so cheesy, but we thought we were being super-inventive. It makes me laugh, though, because I was so much younger then, and it's funny to see all the stupid little inside jokes I had with my friends at the time in the story.

So, do you have copies of your first fan fics? How do you feel about going back and reading them? Do you get embarrassed?

My first fic was a Young Americans/Buffy crossover called Fangs. It was pretty cringe-worthy so not too long ago I went back and edited it, cleared up the more obvious grammatical errors and made some changes to details. I don't think a copy of the unedited version is still up on the net, but here's the revised version: Fangs.

ah, memories

My first piece of fanfiction was the 'Death Series' involving Dawson and Joey. Angst at its worst. Dawson attempts suicide, blah, blah, blah.

It can be found at my old site: http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionC...7088/dths.html

My first fanfic is no longer posted, though a revised version will hopefully find it's way back to ff.net. Its two biggest problems were the summary (which caused a bit of controversy) and its script format.

Does my first effort embarrass me? No, though I plan to change it from script to narrative before it's reposted. Of course, it's been less than a year since I wrote it so maybe it will embarrass me once more time has passed.

My first ever fic was, ironically, one of the best reviewed fics I've written lol.

It's a Buffy/Angel crossover fic that takes place post Buffy Season 4 and Angel Season 1. I wrot it when I was like 14 or 15 (I'm 19 now).

You can read it here if you'd like:

My first fanfic is not available anywhere online, fortunately. It was written more like a summary than an actual fanfic, and was supposed to be a crossover fic with Buffy, Angel, and Charmed. I am not proud.

I wrote my first fan fic way back on ... Monday. It's still being beta-read.

I took a quick look. Enough to see that it's written in perfectly intelligible English, which puts it miles ahead of mst people's first fics! (Althohgh I'm still not going to read it because I got more than enough of that Angsty Triangle on the actual show!)

What is it about, and what do you think of it?

I mean, I don't think you can get a really objective look at your first fic until at least a year down the track, but what do you think of it now?

My first fic was a Roswell M/L one. (I shudder to think of both the show and the pairing now. But especially the pairing.) It was one of those ridiculous things where Max and Liz haven't seen each other in years, and Liz is getting married, and then Max pops back up in her life, and she decides she just can't get married when Max is around. And there are "subplots" involving the other 2 pairings. It's online here.

My first fanfic that I never completed was about that movie Whit Squall, not the actual movie but alot like it with those guys in mind. I was in 6th grade and I never finished it because it was awful. I didn't so other stuff back then but I don't remember it. I didn't really get into writing fanfics until a few years ago and that one was about a book I'd read by Julie Garwood. Didn't finish that one either. My first finished one was a Magnificent Seven one based on Ezra.

It's about Smallville. Just 2 pages. Clark is trying to talk Lex into just walking away from Lionel and LuthorCorp. I wrote it in two sittings of about 30 minutes each, the last one being Monday.

Tuesday I thought it was the most brilliant thing I'd ever written. Wednesday I started to think it probably had some noticable flaws. Today I started wondering what the hell I was thinking, letting anyone else read that drivel. I have 2 betas looking at it, and neither of them has said anything yet. In another day I'll probably want to chop off my fingers so I won't ever write anything again.

But such is the way with writing; I already knew that. I haven't written any ficiton in nearly 20 years, but I've written enough term papers to be an old hand at the experience. I'm sure this will be familiar to everyone:

Day of term paper: I AM A GENIUS!
Day after term paper: I'm not a genius.
Two days after term paper: Why did I hand that in????
Getting term paper back: It was OK.

(Still no beta response. They're probably both trying to figure out a polite way to tell me how bad it is. Don't think I have any knives sharp enough to cut through my fingers, though. Hmm.)

ETA:

OK, one beta wrote back that she "loved and enjoyed it." Yay! Still need to make one change to the timing, though. Will take some thought. Pacing is everything.
