PLEASE READ: Board traffic evaluations for September and October

Edited 1 November:

Official post counts are out and the fanfic board averaged 177.75 posts per week, so we're safe!

Hi guys,

It's that time again... board traffic evaluations are here.

During September and October, the management team are going to be monitoring the post counts on all the boards at Fan Forum. The boards that don't meet a minimum post requirement of 100 posts per week (on average) will be closed.

For the last round of evaluations, the fanfic board was on the exempt list, which no longer exists. So, we're subject to the same post requirements as everyone else, and I have to say I'm a bit scared because we seem to be teetering on the borderline here.

100 posts per week breaks down to just over 14 posts per day on this board, so if you would like to keep the fanfic board at Fan Forum, please help out by lurking less and posting more.

Any questions or concerns, please voice them here or PM Caty or me. Cheers.

To echo what Nicky said, everyone please try to post on a consistent basis during this period!

My experience on fic lists has been that posts always pick up after Labor Day. New shows, bad weather, unlimited access to computers in the school library, coupled with the drive to seek distraction from homework...if posts have been borderline for the last couple of months, they will probably rise a bit anyway.

Looking over the new fall shows (and renewals), I didn't see anything that looked like it would generate a new fic fandom. Though I am partial to sci fi, and this season is the sparsest for that in years (Smallville and Star Trek Enterprise are it, on network tv. Though Kerr Smith is supposed to become a regular on Charmed. Is Charmed sci fi?). What shows do other people think may inspire the most fic this year?

The thing is, of course, that most of the shows that inspire fics will have their own boards on FF anyway, with their own fic threads. In order to keep the fanfic board alive, I think we have to place more of an emphasis on threads that other boards don't have - such as the discussion type threads for writers and readers not specific to any fandom. I, for one, will definitely start a YA fic thread on the Young Americans board if this board gets closed, but I will certainly miss all our discussion threads such as 'fanfic writers Q&A' or 'I can't stand...' or the Mary Sue thread. That's my main motivation for saving this board.

That would be ironic. When this board was started around 4 years ago, the idea was that this would be the only place to post links to fanfic. The Roswell board mods at the time were quite aggressive about closing any thread, eg, discussion of an episode, if anyone posted a link to a fic, even if it was relevant to the thread. I think they were afraid that Brendan Fehr's manager would discover more Micheal-slash and bug out.

I've rarely posted fic links to other boards. Once, I posted a link to a Fastlane slash archive to the Fastlane board in response to someone looking for all genres of Fastlane fic, but I deleted the post after one of the board regulars complained. So I concluded that the FanFic board must be the board with the most open "community standards" when it comes to fic.

Yeah, I remember a time when moderators of other boards would close fanfic threads and direct them here. Unfortunately for the traffic of our board, that rule was slowly eroded as more and more new mods got appointed who were unaware of the rule and did not enforce it, making fanfic threads legit across many boards. I raised this point a while ago, and the higher-ups decided to do away with the rule altogether. We tried to maintain the uniqueness of the fanfic board by allowing direct posting of fics here (whereas the other fanfic threads are only allowed to post links), but that hasn't caught on quite as much as I would have liked to see.

Still, I do think the fanfic board serves other functions than to host a bunch of fandom fic threads unrelated to each other: I've met quite a few other writers on here, whose fandoms I rarely, or never, frequent; but nevertheless we have had some very interesting conversations about writing and fanfic in general. That aspect is what I would really hate to lose if this board is closed, because I don't really see where else these topics can be raised.

If this board fails to make its numbers, one option would be to merge with the books board, which also seems to be on the edge. Both have to do with what people are reading, and both have threads about writing.

I agree, it's good to have designated cross-fandom space. Particularly as there are always going to be some fandoms for shows which don't have their own boards here.

Well, personally, I'd like this board to stick around out of sheer laziness. Sure, you could start fic threads at whichever board you wanted. But where else would I be able to get links to all the fandoms I sometimes read in, all in one place? My dial-up simply isn't fast enough to let me go to every board in search of fic threads!

It's definitely possible for some of the aspects of the fanfic board to merge with the books board, but like Caty said, I would also like to have this board not be closed, if at all possible. A lot of that desire stems from inertia, I won't deny that ( ), but I think fanfic as a 'genre' in itself is substantially different to published writing, and a substantial part of what we talk about here might not sit too well on the books board.

Still, it's a distinct possibility, and one that I might bring up to the higher-ups if our board don't make it.

Yes, as Nicky said, while this fanfic board *could* probably be combined with the books board, there are some threads that might not mesh so well. I would also be concerned that a combined books/fanfic board would just be *too* big and cumbersome. I know I wouldn't want to spend a ton of time looking for my fic threads!

But if we all keep posting, then hopefully we won't have to worry about merging!

I have to say I'm liking the fact that we're contributing to the post count by discussing why we should raise post counts so that the fanfic board doesn't get closed.

I hope this board makes it. I love it here. This board is a great place to converse with other writers. And, above all else, this board is the only one on all of Fan Forum that requires me to really think before I post.; I like that.

Definitely! I agree with everything kaykayelle just said.

I think we're doing well so far. Keep it up!
