Fan Fiction/Writing - AU, Slash, Songfic, etc... Your favorite/least favorite Fan Fiction sub genres

I don't read slash, but I do enjoy AU (Alternate Universe) and crossovers. I've only read a few crossovers but I've been meaning to read a Gilmore Girls/Supernatural one.

The only crossover I've written is Buffy/Angel so not that much of a stretch.

I enjoy songfics if they're well written.

What about you?

My least favourite fanfiction sub genre is right now, smut. It seems you can read only two kinds of fics nowadays: smut or SUPER fluffy. I mean ... hello? There are not any kind of genre between these two? Because I used to read very good fics and there weren't neither smut nor fluffly.

I really hate when people take a cannon situation and rewrite it so their favourite character is the centre of the drama.

For example in the One Tree Hill fandom there are so many rewrites where Brooke gets shot in the school shooting - but on the actual show Brooke wasn't even IN the school during the shooting.

It annoys me no end!

I'm not too into songfics, but I'm OK with a lyric being posted at the beginning/end. I guess it just depends on if I like the song. It irritates me if I love the fic, but hate the song and the lyrics are all over the place.

Some fandoms it works for, though, if music is a big part of the character/show. Instant Star, for example, but let's keep it with music from the characters. I don't want a Britney Spears song for Jude. That just... doesn't work. Choose one of hers. (I don't know if that's ever happened, but it's possible.)

I don't read slash really, but I will if it's just something I have to check out and see what the big deal is.

I don't mind songfic too much, if the lyrics are meaningful to the story. Some of my friends have done ficmixes, with lyrics and links to DL songs integrated into the story, and they have been fantastic.

I have never read anything like rape or abuse fics, and can't imagine doing so. Just not my cup of tea. I'm also not so much into fluff, although sometimes a good bit of fluff is just really cozy to wrap yourself in.

I think the idea of crossovers is fantastic! Combining different worlds together makes for so many different possibilities! One friend did a story with Sam from Quantum Leap mixed with RPF and that was an amazing fic! I've also read Hairspray/HSM crossovers, and they've been lots of fun!

I didn't think about ficmixes. I have seen quite a few of those that I like and I've thought about doing that myself. Mixes usually make more sense with some fic attached.

I love AU fics, I forgot to mention that. I'm a big UC ship fan, so AU is usually the best way to go.

I can't read smut anymore, I'm finding that I'm even skipping over any sex scenes within a fic because I'd much rather just get on with the story

Fluff doesn't bother me too much though, I'd rather read a good fluff story than a really angsty one atm.

I don't mind songfics, but I personally can't write them.

I guess I'm not all that into crossovers, though. Maybe its because I don't watch enough shows, and all I write is OTH

I really can't read crossovers.

They just don't work for me.

And I hate fluff, where everyone is always happy and skipping along in a meadow full of daisies. Need angst baby.
