Jensen in 6x01 "Exile On Main Street" SPN Episode Discussion

Exile On Main Street
September 24, 2010
The CW

It's a year later and Dean (Jensen Ackles) has given up hunting and is living with Lisa (guest star Cindy Sampson) and her son Ben (guest star Nicholas Elia). Mysteriously freed from his cage in hell, Sam (Jared Padalecki) finds Dean and tells him he needs to rejoin the fight and introduces Dean to a world-a family-he never even knew existed: the Campbells, his mother's family, lead by none other than their Grandfather Samuel (Pileggi).

Phil Sgrricia directed the episode written by Sera Gamble.

Well, on the bright side they brought Nicholas back I thought they might recast him.

^We thought he was. Obviously, nothing stays dead in the SPN world. And I like that.

I wanna know how Grandpa Campbell stayed not-dead, because I thought he died back then. I'm hoping for at least an explanation or my heads gonna go crazy. But, regardless, I can't wait to see this.

OMG I love this episode!!!
Especially the beginning! This montage of Deans live now and back then is absolute perfect. I love the way how it is edited for example the salt. Back then he put it on the floor and now he needs is for his cooking. Just great! I like this new Dean.
When Dean wakes up from his nightmare about Sam - the impression on Jensens face tells you all you need to know. Such great acting!
The scene in the bar - mhhh - but right after it he goes back into huntermode and it is pretty suspenseful.
And then in the garden when he finds the dog from Yellow Fever - a big smile appeared on my face. That was hilarious!
The scene with the YED I knew from the trailer and so it was ok.
And I really like the first meeting between Dean and Sam. Of course Dean is angry when Sam tells him how long he been back.
The sentence with the textmessage ability is so good. It is exactly my thought about this whole thing.

The campbells I am not overly impressed with them and I could live without them but maybe when time goes by they get better.
I don´t know what to think about the grandfather - especially after the scene where he says bring it to the truck before the boys get back.
I believe he and the rest of them are no good news at all.

I love the little dialog between Sam and Dean in the kitchen. When Dean asked Sam about his time in hell.
Sam is such a tough boy this whole episode but when he says the line "can see you again" there is a softness in his voice, it warms my heart. And I now that not all hope is lost on Sammy.

The djinns were ok but I hope to see more of them and their power.

And I really like Lisa in this episode. She was suspicious in the right scenes and understand what is going on in Dean.
Their talk on the stairs is realistic. I love it when she calls him an idiot and that when he shows up on her door she knew that he had a couple of issues.
Right there I knew that she is the right women for him. Who puts his head straight when needed and on the other side is just there for him and loves him.
I wasn´t a fan from Lisa right from the start but she wins me over more and more.

My highlight was the scene with Bobby, Dean and Sam. I don´t need anything more then these three in a room talking about their problems and motivations why they did the things they did. Jim Beaver was really great in that scene. As were Jared and Jensen!!! Can´t wait for next friday!!!

Okay so I'm a little overwhelmed and I have totally mixed feelings about the premier.

I agree that the opening montage was beautifully done with the parallel cut between Dean's new life and old one. I really loved that. I also liked Lisa (though I never had a problem with her) so it was reassuring to see that she understood Dean when he showed up and didn't have illusion about him and still thought about a last year as one of the best for her. I really hope they don't just get ditched. And as much as it hurt that the brothers were not together yet I could see Dean's point in staying with Lisa and Ben.

I have to say I don't really like Grandpa Samual though. I don't think he means good news to the guys. I don't know what to think of the rest of the Campbells. I don't know where the storyline is going but I feel their presence at this point of the show is unneseccary. I would have liked them better had they showed up a few seasons earlier.

Then there's Sam. Something for me is really off about him though I can't put my finger on it. And I don't really like his new attitude. Not telling Dean that he is back was absolutely cruel from him in my opinion no matter how he reasons. And he should have known that Dean would look into getting him out. He did the same when Dean went to hell. I just can't make my peace with the fact that everybody kept his return secret from Dean. No matter how they thought it was in his best interest.

I think Jensen did a great job keeping the core of Dean's character while showing his new softer side. I can see why it falls out of his comfort zone playing Dean like that, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it's going to be based on spoilers.

All in all I still don't know how to feel about this epi. I think I need a couple of more episodes to get the new direction of the show to decide whether I like it or not.

I haven't seen it yet but I've heard some less than flattering things about it. I don't want the boys to change, Sam and Dean being Sam and Dean make the show for me and I don't want them to be different, I know obviously that circumstances change people but i don't want them to change too much.

I'm also ansty about it because I read an interview yesterday where Jensen said he wasn't happy with how Dean had changed and gone soft which isn't good.

I guess I should reserve my judgement for when I've actually seen it, you never know I could be pleasantly surprised

I didn't like it. I liked Dean (not his domestication) but Dean in general but the over all feel and story of the episode I could carel ess for.

Highlight...BARE FEET DEAN!

LOVED Sid.

Sammy...Just when I thought I couldn't have more Sam issues he pulls something like this!

Bobby, HOW COULD YOU!

Cas? Well no Cas...but he didn't answer Sam's prayers...so that was a big in my book. ....not because of my issues with Sam...but because I was so worried that Cas would be part of this big huge lie they let Dean believe. I just couldn't see him doing that, not to Dean. Maybe Cas did know Sam was alive, but it's one thing to not go pop in on Dean and say hey did you know Sam's alive but it's a total different thing and a HUGE betrayl to be a part of it. To on purposely keep it away from Dean. Plus even if he did know, how was he suppose to find Dean? Cas is a full fledged angel now and Dean still has that protection spell carved in his ribs.

And what's Sam's problem anyway? He's been alive for a year...so he spent what, like an hour in hell? DEAN SPENT 40 YEARS! You don't see him cutting off his family and lying to them, letting them think he's still rotting away in the pit.

As for Lisa and Ben...Lisa has to go...Ben, Ben can stay, and maybe live with his grandparents or something.

Lisa's a bit wonky with me still. Ben's adorable. Her character, though, alone just seems so out of place for me. Maybe it's because out of the whole series we've only seen her just about four times? I don't know. She just feels weird being with Dean. The idea is touching, but the timing just seems really off for me or forced.

I was so mega surprised that Bobby knew of Sam's existence and that he didn't bother to tell Dean. I even verbally reprimanded them both on the TV screen for it. I get their feelings of allowing Dean to have a "normal" somewhat "happy" life, but at the expense of him virtually thinking his brother was long gone? No sir. I'd be severely pissed if someone kept something like that from me for a year!

The introduction to the mystery about the monsters going different seemed a bit rushed to me, but entirely understandable because "something" had to be said about what's been going on. The Campbells are just weird. Dean's delayed reaction was very appropriate, and frankly I'm still contemplating how this came to have "happened" with Grandpa living again.

Sammy you seem off, but it's entirely understandable why you should be and I somewhat kinda like it. Call me crazy, but a change in mannerisms seems almost exciting. Gets my mind reeling and all that jazz. Oh, and I'm probably the only one who actually likes Sammy's new car (though nothing can compare to Miss. '67 Black Impala) . I'm a car gal, so I take notice. I wanna know what it is. It's modern and kinda looks like a Mustang...but I could be wrong. Impala I still you though! Don't ever change! (this isn't betrayal )

Apart from my concerns, Dean was still breathtaking to look at. Just lookin' at him sent me on cloud nine. Bed scenes, close up scenes, intense looks that make you go weak in the knees scenes. I'm hopeless I guess.

I've also read that interview before watching the episode and I had worries. But Jensen did a great job with trying to keep Dean, Dean while being this new domesticated guy at the same time.

That was a lovely image! I was like "oohhh, he's barefeet, he's barefeet"

I know right? I really hope they don't forget about the fact that Dean's been in hell for 40 freaking years as well, he got tortured, he tortured as well. And still the first thing was to try to get in touch with Sam and then find him. Okay we don't know fully what happened to Sam down there but still. And from this one epi it looked like he thinks he's the only one who's ever been down there and came back.

And what buffled me the most is the missing chemistry, sparkle, bond whatever between the borthers. Even in the pilot you instantly felt how close the brothers can be to each other. Now it seemed like... I don't know like they were two far away acquaintances, even that hug feeled forced to me.

I know they can't stay the same after what they've been through, but they are brothers who never had anybody else beside each other and now Sam was ready to go around with never seen family members for a year instead of telling his borther who raised him that he is alive and not rotting in hell anymore? That seems toally OOC for me.

Something is really super off with Sam. Sure he's been back for a year but still it's weird!
