Jensen in 3x14 "Long-Distance Call" SPN Episode Discussion

Long-Distance Call
May 1st 2008
THE CW

Dean (Jensen Ackles) is stunned after he receives a phone call from his dad (guest star Jeffrey Dean Morgan) who tells him he has a solution to get Dean out of his deal.

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean fight because Sam is skeptical that it is really John on the other end of the phone and warns Dean not to listen to him but Dean disagrees and sets off on his own path to follow his father's orders.

Charles Beeson directed the episode written by Jeremy Carver.

I am so anxious to see this episode! it sounds fantastic. And it was writen by Sera so you know it will have a good gut wrenching scene in it.

I'll start then shall I?

I loved all the Sam/Dean moments And Dean was amazing in this episode. It was so heartbreaking to see him waiting anxiously to talk to his Dad again and finally admitting he was terrified of going to Hell. *sniff* But overall the episode just felt lacking to me. I didn't like the story, I was so disappointed when I found out who the monster was behind it all. I was expecting much more from an episode that promised Papa Winchester back and which was so close to the finale. I don't know, I loved so many moments in this episode but they're all just little things which were part of a disappointing episode.

And did any one else notice that Sera was recycling some old Dean lines from season 1. "It's miller time!"

YES! EXACTLY! I don't know if I had put to much expectations in this episode, because I expected it to be amazing, the potential was there, you have Sera writing, who is usually brilliant when it comes to angst and Dean/Sam moments, you have JDM guest staring, and you have Dean talking to his father or maybe not...yet the episode just fell flat. I don't know if they couldn't get JDM to do more voice work or what but I was disappointed with the little bit we got, I love Dean but I really wanted John/Monster to play with his head, bring up some more issues etc, and it this just didn't do it. and besides we knew from the second conversation it wasn't John, he told Dean I love you. in Devils Trap Dean knew it wasn't the real John because he said I'm proud of you...we're suppose to believe dead or not John is just going to throw out I love you? I can understand why Dean overlooked it, he wanted to believe, but I wish the fans were kept doubting all the way until the end...that maybe, just maybe this was John and there was a way to save Dean.

So while J2 had great performances and there were a few good quotes...over all I would give the episode and Eh. Not one of my faves. And no moments in it end up on my fave list either. ...Better luck next week.

Me too. After DALDOM we saw some of Dean's Dad issues come out and I really hoped we would see some more of that. And if you're going to bring back such an important and loved character into a show you don't just give them a couple of scenes over the phone where pretty much F all happens. There was so much more Sera could have done with this episode.

Yup! Like really drag Dean through the ringer with this one. That line about How could you? run with that! break Dean to pieces! Especially after Dean tells him, he was just protecting Sam like he told him to. (which was heartbreaking, did you hear Dean's voice crack?) ...the monster should have had some fun with it, something like he's not worth selling your soul over, he's evil or something! but no, let's just move on with the story and waste time on Laney or whatever her name was.

There was far too much time spent on the more minor parts of the story, it should have focused more on Dean and "Dad." We didn't need all that Laney and her brother running into traffic stuff. Sera did the same thing in tkaa. There seems to be issues with coming up with decent monster stories this season and making them flow alongside all the mythology and brotherly moments.

All the episode achieved was we now know that Dean is officially scared and desperate and that there's still no hope of saving him. And we pretty much knew this already from episode one.

yet again opposite you guys, I loved this episode, it was creepy, funny, action, brotherly moments def had some SPN layers in there. However I must agree it was very disappointing having so little of John, I expected a lot more father and son time and the boys were separated a lot, this is the last time I put so much expectation in it because I get turned around every time, they just cant seem to get it right, overall I enjoyed it.

I think this time I felt like most of you (Sorry, Jaye. ) It was good and still it was lacking something and but unlike the rest if you I couldn't put my finger on what I was missing, but I agree on everything you say, except for wishing for more John.
