I always called my Dad, Sir. That's just how people in the south and midwest (blue collar families) are/were raised (it seems to be fading). To me, it's respectful. I like that the boys have good manners.

That is exactly where I'm at. I don't doubt that John loved Dean, he just had a crappy way of showing it, he put way to much on Dean. I'm not sure he loved Sammy more but he was certainly more protective of him, which probably looked like he loved him more, I keep thinking of that look he gave Dean in Something Wicked and I just can't get past it. Dean was 12? Don't be pissed at him for not being able to take care of Sam when it should have been John there all the time, not Dean. So yeah John was a crappy father, but like you said, he gave his soul for Dean and to the one thing he hated most in the world, that alone speaks volumes, it just doesn't erase everything.

we weren't raised like that, it was offensive if you called your father anything but Dad. Sir was for super strict parents.

yeah, and the fact that john put so much on dean? i always thought that it showed just how much respect and faith he had...

oh yeah, where i come from, if you didn't respond to your father with "sir", there was gonna be hell to pay...it was simple respect and if you couldn't show simple respect to your parents...

Yep. I'm still caught so off guard when I heard kids answering their parents with "Yeah?" or "What?" because we had to say "Sir?" or "M'am?". Dad told us to go put something away in our room it was "Yes, sir." We still called him Dad when we spoke to him though - just like Dean did.

i get so annoyed with my own kids when they say "what" or my personal favorite "I'M COMING!" people give me some hateful looks when i get onto my kids for tone of voice or not using "ma'am" but that's how i was raised...

Well good for you! People talk about strict parents these days like it's all just bad but it's important for them to become good adults. They say a child's basic personality is completely developed by the age of 5 so it's important to be strict on them and work on manners a lot when they are really young.

But I shouldn't hijack this thread for that...lol
