He couldn't show weakness.
The one time he let his emotions get the better of him, he was 'reprogramed' and that couldn't have been fun. I don't blame him for putting a wall up. Even Max didn't really know what it was like when they got older, because she got out. __________________

And yeah, you're right. He learned that that side of him was a bad thing, a weakness and it took some time for him to change that thinking, but I think Joshua helped a lot with that. __________________
