Jake Gyllenhaal takes on Boston hero in 'Stronger'

The actor is not only starring in the drama but will now also produce it as well.

Bold Films has come on board to produce and fully finance Stronger, a Boston Marathon bombing feature project that is to star Jake Gyllenhaal.

At the same time, Gyllenhaal, who has a first look deal with Bold, the company behind his acclaimed 2014 movie Nightcrawler, is expanding his role in the drama, becoming one of its producers. The move makes Stronger the first film project out of the gate of the star’s production banner Nine Stories that the actor co-runs with partner Riva Marker.

Lionsgate, which was previously financing, remains on board as domestic and international distributor. David Gordon Green will direct Stronger, which is heading towards an April 4 production start as it adapts the book by Jeff Bauman, a survivor who lost both his legs in the 2013 attack. Bauman was waiting for his girlfriend at the finish line of the annual marathon when two pressure-cooker bombs exploded, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others.

Gyllenhaal will portray Bauman, while Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany will play his girlfriend.

John Pollono wrote the script for the project, which was developed by Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman of Mandeville Films. Lieberman and Hoberman are producing the movie, as is Scott Silver, reuniting the team that helped make the Oscar-winning 2010 drama The Fighter. Gyllenhaal joins them, as does Bold’s Michel Litvak.

“Riva and I started Nine Stories just a few months ago to support and create projects like Stronger,” Gyllenhaal said in a statement. “We are extraordinarily excited to bring this inspiring story of love and the human spirit to the big screen.” Nine Stories also is developing an anthology series centered on cults for A&E.

Marker, Peter McGuigan, Anthony Mattero and Gary Michael Walters will exec produce the movie. Walters said boarding Stronger is part of Bold's overall plan of "expansion into bigger-budgeted films."

They’ll support the team for Boston Medical Center, the hospital where Bauman was treated following the Marathon bombing.

Boston Medical Center announced Monday that former patient and Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman and actor Jake Gyllenhaal are teaming up as honorary co-captains of the hospital’s 2016 Boston Marathon Team.

The two will provide support to a group of 87 people running on Team BMC on Monday, April 18, and will join the team at the BMC’s annual pasta dinner the night before the race on April 17.

Bauman, who lost both legs from the knee down during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, was treated and underwent multiple surgeries at BMC. In April 2015, he testified in the trial that convicted Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Bauman’s story and account from April 15, 2013 is immortalized in his memoir, Stronger, which hit shelves 2014.

Stronger is now being made into a major Hollywood movie starring Gyllenhaal. The film based on Stronger will begin shooting in Boston this spring, and is not to be confused with Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming project about the Marathon bombing, Patriots’ Day .

BMC has participated in the Boston Marathon for 13 years, raising $2.91 million for the hospital. This year, the team is raising funds for the hospital’s “Building the New BMC” campaign, which will benefit the hospital’s construction of a new Emergency Department.

Jake said on Kelly & Michael that the movie is more of a love story about Jeff and his wife and how they got through what they did. It'll focus more about their love that happened afterwards rather than the bombing itself. I like what he said about it and made it a future title.

The Demolition star has been hitting the gym big time in Boston, where he's currently prepping for his role as Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman in Stronger, the film based on Bauman's memoir.

On Friday morning, the actor hit up Jamaica Pond, a popular spot for workouts, in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Gyllenhaal and his trainer were spotted exercising around the 68-acre kettle pond, which is part of the famed Emerald Necklace park and running trail.

Dressed in running shorts and a backwards hat, Gyllenhaal followed the instructions of his trainer, who was wearing an official Boston Marathon jacket.

"He looked skinny," said onlooker Randi Whitcomb, who was also catching a morning workout at the park. "He's in training mode."

But that's just part of Gyllenhaal's current workout regimen. He's frequently been spotted heading to SoulCycle in the Back Bay neighborhood for early morning classes. A fellow SoulCycler who had just finished his class on Thursday spotted Jake at the front desk talking quietly with the staffers. Wearing a hat pulled down low, Gyllenhaal was escorted into the room just as his class was about to start.

"A staffer quietly took him inside the dark studio and got him set up on a bike like anybody who normally would be late for a class," said the SoulCycler. "Except in this case it seems like it was a late guidance because he's Jake Gyllenhaal, late on purpose."

Jake isn't just taking his role seriously on-screen. He's also serving as an honorary co-captain of Boston Medical Center's 2016 Boston Marathon team along with with Bauman, who was treated at the hospital in 2013. Bauman went on to author his book, and welcomed a baby girl named Nora with his wife back in 2014.

Gyllenhaal has spent significant time in the Boston area meeting with several bombing survivors, and touring the area hospitals where many of them were treated.

Another film based on stories surrounding the Marathon Bombings and subsequent manhunt is currently filming in Boston. Patriot's Day, starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Peter Berg, is currently filming in Dorchester and Quincy.
