The Trio [R/H/Hr] ~ No better friendship than this

Welcome to the Trio (Ron/Harry/Hermione) Appreciation Thread #27

Banner made by realchemistry@LJ

Their History:

The Trio’s story is one of deep loyalty and friendship. They’ve had their share of disagreements and also their share of victories and painful defeats, but one thing has stayed true and unyielding, it's their bond of friendship.

The Adventure of The Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone

[size=1]The trio met on their first train ride to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry Potter, who is the famed Boy Who Lived and Ron Weasley, the youngest son of a poor wizarding family, hit if off instantly but the same cannot be said of their meeting with Hermione Granger, a muggle-born witch. When arriving at Hogwarts, Draco Malfoy, the brat-prince of a rich pureblood wizarding family, introduces himself to Harry, whom he rebuffs because of Draco’s condescending attitude toward Ron, hence becoming his arch enemy and rival. Ron, Harry and Hermione are all sorted into Gryffindor House and Draco in Slytherin. During their first year, they learn what it is to be wizards and witches, and Harry is quickly introduced to the game of Quidditch, when he’s assigned to the Gryffindor team as the “youngest Seeker in a century”.

Ron and Hermione are not on the best of terms which is compounded by Hermione showing Ron up in Charms class performing the Levitation charm ‘Wingardium Leviosa’ and when Ron mocks her, she locks herself in the girls’ lavatory, crying. In the mean time, the school faculty and students learn a troll has escaped from the dungeon and is making its way through the school. When Ron and Harry find out the troll has gone into the girls’ lavatory, and fearing for Hermione’s safety, they head to the lavatory themselves. The troll tries to get to Hermione, and has her cornered, when Harry and Ron arrive on the scene. Harry jumps on the troll’s head and Ron performs the same Levitation charm Ron tried unsuccessfully earlier in class, knocks out the troll with its own falling club. When some of the teachers arrive on the scene, Harry and Ron find themselves in trouble but Hermione saves them in turn by lying to Prof. McGonagall about wanting to stop the troll by herself and that Ron and Harry just managed to save her in time. It’s fair to say that after this incident, the trio became fast and inseparable friends.

Later, they discover that a three-headed dog, named ‘Fluffy’, is guarding a trapdoor in a forbidden corridor of the school, which they later deduce must be guarding the legendary ‘Philosopher’s Stone’. They mistakenly believe that Prof. Snape is trying to steal it in order to help Lord Voldemort be restored to power.

Fearing the theft of the Stone to be imminent, they get through the trapdoor to get to it first. They must go through several special ‘security’ charms set up by some of the school’s staff and the last one is a giant charmed Chess board, with “live” pieces, which they have to play in order to get to the Stone. Ron, who is very proficient at the game, hops onto the horse of a Knight piece and directs the game which he ends up having to sacrifice himself, by being knocked out by the 'Queen', in order for Harry to get through the last barrier to the Stone. Harry succeeds in keeping the stone away from Voldemort, who had been living inside Prof. Quirrell in the back of his head, whom ends up getting killed and Voldemort is driven away in a ghostlike form. Thankfully, Harry comes out of this encounter virtually unharmed and later learns that Ron survived his own encounter and is safe.

The Adventure of The Chamber of Secrets

Second year starts off with Harry getting a visit from the elf ‘Dobby’ at the Dursleys, he has come to warn Harry that he’ll be in mortal danger if he returns to Hogwarts this year. Harry, however, is determined to go back to school despite Dobby’s advice, pleas, and attempts to stop him using magic. Harry gets in big trouble with the Dursleys, they lock away his books and wand and even Hedwig and he becomes a virtual prisoner at number four Privet Drive. However, Ron with the help of the twins come to his rescue when they show up in their dad’s flying Ford Anglia. After spending a pleasant summer with the Weasleys, the time to return to Hogwarts has arrived… only when they get to platform 9¾, neither Harry or Ron can get through the barrier. When they realize the train is about to leave without them, in desperation, they take Mr. Weasley’s car and fly to Hogwarts where they crash land into the Whomping Willow and during this unfortunate incident, Ron’s wand gets broken.

Second year also brings a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in the form of vain and pretentious Gilderoy Lockhart. This is also Ron’s baby sister Ginny’s first year at Hogwarts. Things take a really bad turn during the start of the school year when the Chamber of Secrets is revealed to have been opened when a couple of students and Filch’s cat are ‘petrified’. According to legend, the chamber can only be opened by the true heir of Slytherin. Several occurences take place, most of which is Harry’s ability to speak Parseltongue, which has many start to suspect he is behind the attacks. Harry, Ron and Hermione spend a great deal of time trying to figure out who it could be.

The attacks increase and a few other people become ‘petrified’, including Hermione. To top it all, a message was left on a wall that a student, Ginny, had been taken into the chamber where “her bones will lie forever”. With Ron’s help, Harry discovers the opening to the chamber and also discovers that Ginny is the one who initially opened it, but did not do so of her own free will. She was being possessed by Lord Voldemort, who had the name Tom Riddle when at school. He imprinted his memory into a diary which was left for Ginny. Riddle, in the hopes of the chamber being opened once again, fifty years later, becomes steadily more alive as he slowly steals away the life from Ginny.

Ron, naturally worried for his sister, and Harry forcefully enlist Prof. Lockhart’s help in rescuing Ginny. Once down in the chamber, Prof. Lockhart manages to steal Ron’s wand and when he’s about to hex them with an ‘erasing’ charm, Ron’s broken wand backfires and hits him instead, thus erasing all of his memories and causing part of the chamber to cave-in, cutting Ron off from going any further. Therefore, Harry must go ahead alone to face the Basilisk, a snake-like monster, which when looked at, kills you. He finds Ginny lying on the ground, cold and close to death. He also comes face to face with the memory, in human form, of one Tom Marvolo Riddle, whom Harry discovers is none other than Lord Voldemort himself. Harry must fight for his life when the Basilisk is let loose, and with the help of the Sorting Hat, which conjures the sword of Gryffindor, and Fawkes, Dumbledore’s pet Phoenix, he defeats the Basilisk by piercing his mouth with the sword, but not before one of the snake’s fangs, which is poisonous, penetrates his arm. Harry, tired and weakening, gets cured by Fawkes’ tears, which have healing powers. He then stabs the diary with the Basilisk’s fang and ink starts turning to blood and pours out of the diary, thus the memory of Riddle frails out of existence. Fawkes, then flies Harry, Ginny, Ron and Lockhart out of the chamber.

Back in the safety of the school, Harry and Ron learn that everyone who had been ‘petrified’ were cured and hence find their friend Hermione again, alive and well.

The Adventure of The Prisoner of Azkaban

Third year starts off with Harry spending his birthday alone, but this time receives gifts from his friends. Hagrid gives him The Monster Book of Monsters and Ron sent him a clipping of The Daily Prophet showing his family vacationing in Egypt, after his father had won the Grand Prize Galleon Draw. The news is filled with a story about escaped prisoner, Sirius Black, who had been held in the dreaded prison-fortress ‘Azkaban’. But, the most horrifying news of all is Aunt Marge, uncle Vernon’s sister, coming to stay, and during dinner one night, she insults Harry’s parents, and in a fit of anger, uses a spell which causes her to blow up like a balloon. Knowing he’s not to use magic outside school, and fearing his relatives’ wrath, he runs away from the Dursleys.

He feels he’s being watched and when he stumbles after seeing a large black dog, he unknowingly summons the ‘Knight Bus’. While on the bus, he learns that Sirius Black is a follower of Voldemort and that he had been sent to prison for killing thirteen people. He is taken to the Leaky Cauldron where he spends the rest of his holidays. He is joined there by the Weasleys and Hermione.
While buying school supplies in Diagon Alley, Ron decides to get something for his pet rat, Scabbers, who hadn’t been feeling well since the trip to Egypt, and Hermione buys herself a cat, whom she calls Crookshanks – he takes an instant dislike to Scabbers. It is a point of contention between the two friends for most of the school year.

On the night before going back to school, Harry overhears Ron’s parents arguing about Sirius Black and learns that Black is after him. On the train journey to school, the trio share a compartment with a Professor Lupin, whom they think is their new DADA teacher. Once on the train, the journey goes normally at first, but then it comes to an abrupt stop, when menacing hooded figures board the train and make for the trio’s compartment. Harry is strangely affected by these figures, so much so, he faints. When he comes to, Prof. Lupin informs the trio they were ‘Dementors’, guards of the Prison of Azkaban.

Once at school, the trio get into the routine of classes and have new subjects to learn, and Hermione has taken all of the available subjects she can take. This fully loaded timetable is a conundrum to the boys, but especially Ron. In one class with Hagrid, who is now the Care of Magical Creatures teacher, he introduces the students to Hippogriffs, large, deeply dignified creatures, a cross between horses and eagles. Malfoy insults one of these beasts, Buckbeak, and is attacked. Malfoy drags out the injury in an attempt to have Hagrid fired and Buckbeak put to sleep.

During a Hogwarts visit to Hogsmeade, a wizard village which Harry is unable to visit because he has no permission slip, Harry has tea with Professor Lupin. During their talk, Snape brings Lupin a steaming potion, which he drinks, much to Harry's alarm. Later that night, Sirius Black breaks into Hogwarts and destroys the Fat Lady portrait that guards Gryffindor Tower.

During the next Hogsmeade visit, from which Harry is forbidden, Fred and George Weasley give Harry the Marauder's map, written by the mysterious quartet of Moony, Prongs, Wormtail and Padfoot. This map leads him through a secret passageway into Hogsmeade, where he joins up with Ron and Hermione. Inside the Hogsmeade tavern, Harry overhears that Sirius Black is responsable for Harry's parents' deaths, as well as for the death of another Hogwarts student, Peter Pettigrew. Back at Hogwarts, Harry learns that Buckbeak is going to be put on trial, and Hagrid is inconsolable.

Harry starts working with Professor Lupin to fight Dementors with the Patronus charm; he is moderately successful, but still not entirely confident in his ability to ward them off.

Ron discovers evidence that Scabbers has been eaten by Crookshanks, which prompts Ron and Hermione to fight. One night, when all of the students have gone to bed, Sirius Black breaks into Harry's dormitory and slashes the curtain around Ron's bed. Several days later, Hagrid invites Harry and Ron over for tea and scolds them for shunning Hermione on account of Scabbers and having Harry’s new ‘Firebolt’ broom confiscated when she feared it might have been sent by Sirius Black.

Soon Harry, under his invisibility cloak, meets Ron during a Hogsmeade trip; when he returns, Snape catches him and confiscates his Marauder's Map. Lupin saves Harry from Snape's rage. When leaving his office, he then runs into Hermione, who informs him that Buckbeak's execution date has been set. Ron, Hermione, and Harry are reconciled in their efforts to help Hagrid. Around this time, Hermione is exceptionally stressed by all of her work, and in a day she slaps Malfoy for picking on Hagrid and she quits Divination.

Ron, Hermione, and Harry shield themselves in Harry's invisibility cloak and head off to comfort Hagrid before the execution. While at his cabin, Hermione discovers Scabbers in Hagrid's milk jug. They leave, and Buckbeak is executed. As Ron, Harry and Hermione are leaving Hagrid's house and reeling from the sound of the axe, the large black dog approaches them, pounces on Ron, and drags him under the Whomping Willow. Harry and Hermione and Crookshanks dash down after them; oddly, Crookshanks knows the secret knob to press to still the flailing tree. They move through an underground tunnel and arrive at the Shrieking Shack. They find that the black dog has turned into Sirius Black and is in a room with Ron. Harry, Ron, and Hermione manage to disarm Black, and before Harry can kill Black, avenging his parents' deaths, Professor Lupin enters the room and disarms him. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are aghast as Lupin and Black exchange a series of nods and embrace.

Once the three students calm down enough to listen, Lupin and Black explain everything. Lupin is a werewolf who remains tame through a special steaming potion made for him by Snape. While Lupin was a student at Hogwarts, his best friends, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew, became animagi (humans able to take on animal forms) so that they could romp the grounds with Lupin at the full moon. At this moment, Snape reveals himself from underneath Harry's dropped invisibility cloak, but Harry, Ron, and Hermione disarm him, rendering him unconscious. Lupin and Black then explain that the real murderer of Harry's parents is not Black, but Peter Pettigrew, who has been presumed dead but really hidden all these years disguised as Scabbers. Lupin transforms Scabbers into Pettigrew, who squeals and hedges but ultimately confesses, revealing himself to be Voldemort's servant, and Black to be innocent. They all travel back to Hogwarts, but at the sight of the full moon, Lupin, who has forgotten to take his controlling tonic, turns into a werewolf. Sirius Black responds by turning into the large black dog in order to protect Harry, Ron, and Hermione from Lupin. As Black returns from driving the werewolf into the woods, a swarm of Dementors approaches, and Black is paralyzed with fear. One of the Dementors prepares to suck the soul out of Harry, whose Patronus charm is simply not strong enough. Out of somewhere comes a Patronus that drives the Dementors away. Harry faints.

Harry awakens in the hospital wing to hear Snape and Cornelius Fudge discussing the fact that Sirius Black is about to be given the fatal Dementor's Kiss. Harry and Hermione protest, claiming Black's innocence, but to no avail; then Dumbledore enters the room, shoos out the others, and mysteriously suggests that Harry and Hermione travel back through Hermione's time-turning device, and save both Black and Buckbeak. Hermione turns her hour-glass necklace back three turns, and Harry and Hermione are thrust into the past, where they rescue Buckbeak shortly before his execution. From a hiding place in the forest, Harry watches the Dementor sequence and discovers that he had been the one who conjured the Patronus, and he is touched and confused to note that his Patronus had taken the shape of a stag that he recognizes instantly as Prongs, his father's animagi form. After saving his past self from the Dementors, Harry and Hermione fly to the tower where Black is imprisoned, and they rescue Black, sending him away to freedom on Buckbeak's back.

The next day, Harry is saddened to learn that Professor Lupin is leaving Hogwarts because of the previous night's scare. Dumbledore meets with Harry and gives him wise fatherly advice on the events that have happened. On the train ride home, Harry receives an owl-post letter from Sirius that contains a Hogsmeade permission letter, words of confirmation that he is safe in hiding with Buckbeak and that he was, in fact, the sender of the Firebolt, and a small pet owl for Ron.

The Adventure of The Goblet of Fire

Fourth year starts, fifty years before the present day, with a description of how the Riddle family was mysteriously killed at supper, and their groundsman, Frank Bryce, was suspected of the crime, then declared innocent. Frank Bryce, now an elderly man, wakes in the night to see a light in the window of the abandoned Riddle House. He investigates and overhears Voldemort and Wormtail plotting to kill a boy named Harry Potter. Voldemort takes note of him and kills him on the spot. Harry Potter suddenly wakes up in the night with a throbbing pain in the scar Voldemort gave him. He worries that Voldemort is nearby, and he writes to Sirius Black, his godfather, mentioning the pain in his scar.

The next morning Harry's Uncle Vernon grudgingly agrees to let Harry go to the Quidditch World Cup, after receiving a letter from the Weasleys.

Early the next day, the Weasleys, Harry and Hermione head off to the World Cup. They meet up with Cedric Diggory, another Hogwarts student and his dad, and travel by Portkey. Together they are carried to the World Cup campground. Upon arrival, the Weasleys, Harry and Hermione head off to pitch their tent. Soon, Ludo Bagman arrives, jubilant at the festivities, and makes a wager with the twins on the outcome of the Cup. Soon afterward, Mr. Crouch arrives, throwing Percy into a great reverent fuss. Before they leave, they allude to a mysterious event that will happen at Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione
