Leos (H/G): Because she's his ideal girl.

Welcome to the official Leo thread everyone. Home of Harry James Potter and his beautiful bride to be Ginevra Molly Weasley.

We think Leo (the astrological sign of the lion) is a great representation of Harry and Ginny and here's why:
1) Both are Leos: Harry was born on July 31st and Ginny was born on Aug 11th
2) Both are Gryffindor (Lions) students and quidditch team members
3) Both have firery spirits that seem to complement each other perfectly

If these don't say match made in heaven, then heaven must not exist.

What J.K. Rowling says about Harry and Ginny

JKR Q&A (pre-HBP)
(Red Nose Day Chat) Q: Will Harry ever notice the long-suffering Ginny Weasley?
JKR: You'll see... poor Ginny, eh?

(Dec, 2000 Time Magazine Interview) Q: And what about Ginny (Ron's younger sister?)
JKR: Poor Ginny, languishing in love for Harry, and he's merrily asking out other girls right under her nose! But that's just a boy thing."

(Online Chat 04/03/2004) Q: Do you plan for Ginny to take on a major character role in the next two books?
JKR: Well, now that Ginny has stopped being mute in Harry's presence I think you can see that she is a fairly forceful personality (and she always has been, remember Ron saying that she 'never shuts up' in Chamber of Secrets)?

TLC and Mugglenet's interview with JKR -July 16th, 2005
MA: Did Ginny send Harry the valentine?
JKR: Yeah, bless her.
MA: Was it a Tom Riddle thing, or Ginny Weasley?
JKR: No, Ginny Weasley.
MA: Well, she got paid back for it.
JKR: [laughs] Eventually.
MA: I think you set that up from the train compartment scene [in book one], where he was watching — all the relationships, that scene probably set it up.
JKR: I think so. I hope so. So you liked Harry/Ginny, did you, when it happened?
ES: We've been waiting for this for years!
JKR: Oh, I'm so glad.
MA: Oh my gosh, that kiss!
JKR: Yeah.
ES: It actually materialized!
JKR: It actually happened, I know! I felt a little bit like that.
MA: Had you been trying to get them —
JKR: Well I always knew that that was going to happen, that they were going to come together and then part.
ES: Were you always -----ing it? [We can’t figure out what Emerson actually said here.]
JKR: Well, no, not really, because the plan was, which I really hope I fulfilled, is that the reader, like Harry, would gradually discover Ginny as pretty much the ideal girl for Harry. She's tough, not in an unpleasant way, but she's gutsy. He needs to be with someone who can stand the demands of being with Harry Potter, because he's a scary boyfriend in a lot of ways. He's a marked man. I think she's funny, and I think that she's very warm and compassionate. These are all things that Harry requires in his ideal woman. But, I felt — and I'm talking years ago when all this was planned — initially, she's terrified by his image. I mean, he's a bit of a rock god to her when she sees him first, at 10 or 11, and he's this famous boy. So Ginny had to go through a journey as well. And rather like with Ron, I didn’t want Ginny to be the first girl that Harry ever kissed. That's something I meant to say, and it's kind of tied in.

One of the ways in which I tried to show that Harry has done a lot of growing up — in “Phoenix,” remember when Cho comes into the compartment, and he thinks, ‘I wish I could have been discovered sitting with better people,’ basically? He's with Luna and Neville. So literally the identical thing happens in “Prince,” and he's with Luna and Neville again, but this time, he has grown up, and as far as he's concerned he is with two of the coolest people on the train. They may not look that cool. Harry has really grown. And I feel that Ginny and Harry, in this book, they are total equals. They are worthy of each other. They've both gone through a big emotional journey, and they've really got over a lot of delusions, to use your word, together. So, I enjoyed writing that. I really like Ginny as a character.

Bloody McLaggen Ginny visits Harry in the hospital wing after McLaggen knocks him out in the Quidditch match. I was curious to put my own spin on what she did there and why she went, which is where the H/G fluff comes in. Anyway, all of this (except for the scene with Ginny visiting Harry, which is entirely my own) can be found in Chapter 19 of HBP, “Elf Tails.”

Our Favourite HBP scene: Chapter 24
Harry looked around; there was Ginny running towards him; she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her.
After several long moments – or it might have been half an hour – or possibly several sunlit days – they broke apart. The room had gone very quiet. Then several people wolf-whistled and there was an outbreak of nervous giggling. Harry looked over the top of Ginny's head to see Dean Thomas holding a shattered glass in his hands and Romilda Vane looking as though she might throw something. Hermione was beaming, but Harry's eyes sought Ron. At last he found him, still clutching the Cup and wearing an expression appropriate to having been clubbed over the head. For a fraction of a second they looked at each other, then Ron gave a tiny jerk of the head that Harry understood to mean, "Well – if you must."
The creature in his chest roaring in triumph, Harry grinned down at Ginny and gestured wordlessly out of the portrait hole. A long walk in the grounds seemed indicated, during which – if they had time – they might discuss the match.

Chapter 25
The fact that Harry Potter was going out with Ginny Weasley seemed to interest a great number of people, most of them girls, yet Harry found himself newly and happily impervious to gossip over the next few weeks. After all, it made a very nice change to be talked about because of something that was making him happier than he could remember being for a very long time, rather than because he had been involved in horrific scenes of Dark magic.
"You'd think people had better things to gossip about," said Ginny, as she sat on the common-room floor, leaning against Harry's legs and reading the Daily Prophet. "Three Dementor attacks in a week, and all Romilda Vane does is ask me if it's true you've got a Hippogriff tattooed across your chest."
Ron and Hermione both roared with laughter. Harry ignored them.
"What did you tell her?"
"I told her it's a Hungarian Horntail," said Ginny, turning a page of the newspaper idly. "Much more macho."
"Thanks," said Harry, grinning. "And what did you tell her Ron's got?"
"A Pygmy Puff, but I didn't say where."
Ron scowled as Hermione rolled around laughing.

Artwork by Marta

But Ron's tolerance was not to be tested much as they moved into June, for Harry and Ginny's time together was becoming increasingly restricted. Ginny's O.W.L.s were approaching and she was therefore forced to revise for hours into the night. On one such evening, when Ginny had retired to the library and Harry was sitting beside the window in the common room, supposedly finishing his Herbology homework but in reality reliving a particularly happy hour he had spent down by the lake with Ginny at lunch-time, Hermione dropped into the seat between him and Ron...

Hi Fez. Thanks for posting those again. How's the fanvid coming along?

Before the board died we were discussing selections of H/G moments from the books. I believe we were right around the Chamber scene in COS. Shall we continue?

Chapter 17
Quote:
His heart beating very fast, Harry stood listening to the chill silence. Could the baslisk be lurking in a shadowy corner, behind a pillar? And where was Ginny?

"Ginny!" Harry muttered sprinting to her and dropping to his knees.* "Ginny--don't be dead--please don't be dead--"* He flung his wand aside, grabbed Ginny's shoulders and turned her over.... "Ginny, please wake up," Harry muttered desperately shaking her.

"You've got to help me, Tom," Harry said, raising Ginny's head again. "We've got to get her out of here. There's a baslisk...I don't know where it is, but it could be along any moment....Please help me-" Riddle didn't move. Harry, sweating, managed to hoist Ginny half off the floor, and bent to pick up his wand again.

"Listen," said Harry urgently, his knees sagging with Ginny's dead weight. "We've got to go! If the baslisk comes-" "It won't come until it's called," said Riddle calmly. Harry lowered Ginny back onto the floor, unable to hold her up any longer.
I've also found an interesting essay about the COS and sexual symbolism written by angua9. Since were discussing the book now it might be a good point of interest as well.

Awww, the Chamber scene. Where to begin? It was such a big indicator of H/G. CoS was when I first fell in love with H/G because I loved the idea of Harry someday returning Ginny's feelings and them having the connection of the Chamber. The part where he's trying to wake her up in the Chamber is just so romantic without being blatantly romantic, if you know what I mean. People made such a fuss over the part in OotP when Harry panics in the DoM because he think the Death Eater has killed Hermione, and they said that meant Harry loved Hermione. But isn't his reaction to Ginny being dead about the same as with Hermione? Honestly... You wouldn't feel too peachy if you thought your best friend was dead, either. But I'm getting OT.

I also thought the CoS movie foreshadowed H/G a lot in the Chamber scene. CoS got the ships right, IMO, with the R/Hr non-hug and then all the touching-of-the-hands with H/G in the Chamber. I just love how Harry treats Ginny in the movie, and how she actually wakes up and sees that he's hurt. Also, in the book Ginny cries when he wakes her up, but in the movie she doesn't. They both looked so cute in that scene. Bonnie acted really well, too, considering that would not be the easiest scene to do...

Oh - and this is also a bit OT with CoS, but I just thought of it - I was reading the comments to that essay Amy posted on the HP Leo thread, and an H/Hr shipper said something about how Ginny wasn't gutsy at all because if she had been gutsy, she wouldn't have just stood back and let Harry go on the Horcrux hunt alone.

Apparently that person missed the whole point of the breakup scene, which is to show how Ginny IS the ideal girl for Harry. It's not that Ginny doesn't want to go or is too scared - what about her fierce "What if I don't care"? The point was that Ginny understands him and understands that he needs to do it alone, because that's his destiny and she knows she can't interfere if he asks her not to. What other girl would've done that? I ask you... Cho would've burst into tears and yelled at him, and even Hermione (had they been dating) would not have taken something like that very well - you know how argumentative Hermione is! But Ginny understands Harry and what he has to do. The breakup scene is one of my fave H/G scenes because of how it shows how much they get each other, and how compatible they are. And if someone cannot see that, if someone actually accuses Ginny of being a coward for that, then they are really, really refusing to see some obvious stuff.

Okay. Sorry. That just made me mad. Rant over, I promise!

I admit to every once in a while just poping in the CoS DVD and only watching the the Chamber scene because it's so sweet. Next to how amazing HBP is going to be, this sequence will always be one of my favourites for the reasons you described Elizabeth.

The chamber scene was the first blatant romantic clue that JKR gave us. The cliché of the hero saving the damsel in distress from the scary monster. Slaying the monster and saving the day. The film even took it farther and had Harry hold onto Ginny as they flew out of the depths of the evil chamber all Superhero-like.

Going back to the book, Harry's only concern it to get Ginny out of the chamber. He's aware of the basilik and he has no intension of confronting it and killing it. His focus is only on Ginny's safety. Even though she's gravely hurt and unconcious, he holds hope that she can be revived and does everything in his power to keep it together and not freak out. That's the Gryffindor in him I guess.

I have other chamber passages to come but I thought I'd post the essay that I had mentioned above. It's by angua9 at her LJ and it's really well done. She studied CoS as Harry's surviving a puberty initiation task. And the sexual imagery that is implied in book 2. The chamber it self is compared to a woman's womb. The fight with Tom is compared to 2 rival men to claim the woman's virginity.

I'm sure JKR didn't conciously create this symbolism but I found it facinating that we can find these comparisons and see that accuracy within them. I mean if Shakespeare can do it why not Harry Potter.

That essay is really fascinating. I had no idea about all the symbolism!

Quote:

Very true. Well before we got our H/G confirmation I read a lot of theories on how the Chamber had all this sexual imagery, and now - whether it was JKR's intention or not (and some of it had to be to some degree) - we know it's true.

What I really wonder is how much what happened in the Chamber and with Ginny in CoS will ever be mentioned/important in Book 7. I really hope that it is at least discussed or in some way relevant to the plot. Because why have it Ginny? I HIGHLY doubt she's a Horcrux or something (JKR pretty much denied that in the Emerson/Melissa interview), but maybe she knows something, or maybe it'll just give her a greater desire to get revenge on Tom.

Assuming Ginny doesn't know about the Horcruxes (which I don't think she does), then I wonder how she will react when (or if?) Harry tells her that the diary was a Horcrux. Because we have to have some kind of explanation scene for Ginny. She's been kept in the dark so long and JKR can't just say "and then later Harry explained everything to Ginny." No, I think it has to be written out. It'll be a big moment for Ginny to find that out, especially about the diary.

Some H/Hr shippers complain that we were told stuff about Ginny and never shown. For instance the twins tell us she's powerful, Luna says she's nice, Hermione says she broke into the broom shed to steal brooms, etc... (My two cents: what do you call all the times she stuck up for people, or all the stuff she did in Quidditch, or a million other things? But anyway...) Well, I think in Book 7 we will have a lot of stuff Ginny does shown rather than talked about. From what JKR's said so far it seems like Ginny will be a huge character, even bigger than before...

*sigh* When's Book 7 coming out again?

patience young grasshopper.

I agree that we'll see a conversation where Harry will explain everything to Ginny about the Horcruxes because like you said she's going to play some part in the horcrux hunt eventually in the story. There's also the possibility that Harry will explain to her vaguely what has to be done without going into specifics in order to not break the secret keeper trust that he promised Dumbledore so that she'll still be protected. BUT in the event of Voldemort capturing Ginny and Ginny truthfully not knowing anything about the horcruxes, he'll explain (in his own vile and cruel way) about his horcruxes and how interesting that Harry didn't tell his true love about them. That Harry didn't trust Ginny enough to keep the secret. That must mean he doesn't care for her the way she cares for him. A plan to crush her spirit in hopes of using her once again like he did in CoS. But Ginny will prove him wrong.
