I do like where they are both heading, too actually. I think in the end, it'll both make them stronger and closer.

Agreed compeletly! Dean said that he don't want to tell Sam, because Sam would never understand. But Sam wanted to try and he wanted to hear. In the end, Dean told him, and now only thing he gets from it, is regret he ever opened his mouth. Like you said he has talked about it twice. I have been trying to understand the things Sam said, but he took everything away from Dean. Saying that he is better hunter than Dean, was like taking away Dean's whole life. That guy doesn't have anything else than hunting and Sam.

Exactly!!

and blaming it all on the 'spell' is a load of crap! Sam has always known where to hit Dean, and how to hurt him, even back in S1 but this time he went to far, you don't take something like BEING IN HELL! and throw it back in his face!

If it wasn't for Castiel, Dean would still be there!

I was thinking perhaps we're getting too literal there - saying that it's just twice that Dean's told Sam about the time in hell. Yes, twice vocally, but the pressure and seeing how Dean deals with it can count as the many times that Sam is saying. Again, Sam may have been exaggerating it because of the anger and the spell. Yes, the spell, I wouldn't blame it on the spell alone though. But it does count, right?
The truth is, anger is also just a social reaction to hurt. It’s doesn’t necessarily mean it is right or good but it is normal. When you’re angry you don’t really allow yourself to feel your inner vulnerability and hurt. All you can think about in the moment is your desire to get revenge, to defend your pride, to do something—anything—to create the feeling that you have power and importance. I think this holds true with Sam. In his dire attempt to defend his pride (because he feels that he’s nothing and useless because of that blood and his actions that he kept from Dean) and hurt (since he’s seeing his hero Dean as vulnerable and hurt), he turned to anger to hide his defenselessness. He hides his vulnerability with the aggression; he never knew or recognized that the hurt he felt seeing Dean like that triggered his hostile reaction – as some say, emotional fraud. Thus, he told Dean is weak and a lesser hunter, when in fact, maybe, subconsciously, he’s just talking about himself.
Now, same goes with Dean, he was hurt when Sam kept his interactions with Ruby a secret. Sam calls and says Cara was not a fraud. He said that monster reference. Yes, he is angry. He used anger to blurt out his pain. That’s why I said I understand why Dean did say it. I think it’s low and hurtful, but I do understand it.

And I think the same with Sam. It’s wrong, it’s uncalled for, but I do understand him.

Oh, plus, Castiel is just one person (or angel) that they encounter in their lives. Yes, he raised Dean from hell and they may learn a lot from him; but to totally say thank God for Castiel for Dean is an overstatement, I'm sorry. Life is a series of lessons we learned. We wake up everyday knowing what's right and wrong because either we see it from other people or experience it. We learn from all the different people that surrounds us, not only one.
So I think if Sam is not Sam - if there's no Sam - just Dean, Dean will not be the Dean that we know. Dean would be different. If Sam is the perfect little brother, I think Dean will not be the perfect big brother now. They need each other and that's how life works. Even if we don't want Sam right now, in the end, Sam is still his sibling - not Castiel, not Ruby.

ITA and well put! What Sam said hit Dean hard and he was out to really hurt him! And it doesn't matter how many times Dean's spoken or reflected his emotions about hell, he should have never used that as ammunition against Dean! That hit way too far below the belt!

Gay, you make a great point about Sam perhaps transforming his own anxieties about himself into rage against Dean, but you could also argue that it's to do with Sam's power struggles. Sam has always had issues with wanting control of his life, he's always fought against Dad and Dean and believed his way was better, which is why he always ran away to do his own thing instead of following any of their orders. Now that he's mastered some of his powers, he's gotten a taste of what it's like to be stronger then his brother in a way Dean could never be and I can see how this might go to his head and make him believe that this makes him a better hunter.

But what really bugs me about all of this is they never talk about it! It's always, you know I didn't mean it, right? We're good now, right? It's just empty apologizes cause clearly every thing's not alright and surely Sam can see Dean's no where neat alright? Why can't they just talk, fight, hug it out? Instead they just bottle it up! And I'm not putting all the blame on Sam for this one, Dean is to blame for this as well. He should have told Sammy what was really on his mind, not just let the gaping hole between them get bigger! I don't blame them for their actions, cause it's the way it always goes down between them but it just restates me and this time it might even kill them if one of them doesn't speak the truth for a change!

I agree that it is really below the belt and I would've punch Sam myself, too. I just don't blame him much for that resentment because it had built up and not only for that time being - if for the whole lifetime of being Sam. As what I've mentioned earlier.

No matter how he tried to escape his life of hunting, it's always there presenting itself. I wouldn't discount that fact so I accept your point on this, too.

Sad but true. Both of them doesn't realize how important they are for each other and it is for their own peace that they have to talk about it. Heart to heart talk, they just don't understand each other. Sam doesn't know that Dean only wants to protect him; Dean doesn't know how hard it is for Sam to realize that he's got that demon blood and he's misguided that he's the only one who can stop Lilith.

I just wanted to say that I love the discussion here. I wanted to prove to other people that eventhough we have different views on Sam and Dean, we get some depth in explaning our sides. I hated LJ for all the Sam bashing without any explanations and good reasons. It's getting reall pathetic!

It's kinda scary how fast it's consuming him, not only has he totally left behind the life and hopes he had for himself but he's just not the Sam we know anymore, inside and out. I miss the old Sammy!

LJ sucks! I don't even bother reading any of it! You can always rely on some healthy discussion and even bashing in here though.
