New information has come out about why he left:

According to a fan at a convention and interview recently Mark revealed that tptb asked him and another actor from spn to step down to guest star status, involving a no minimum ep guarantee and a 75-85% pay cut, because the show needed to secure Mark P. and Alexander but they could only afford two regulars. The other actor took the deal but Mark walked.

I am rewatching some eps from season 9 with my husband and it makes me remember how awesome Crowley was and how much I miss him.

I really wish he could come back. He was such a great part of the show and I loved his character.
