A lot of show writers insist that characters can't fully develop or mature unless they lose their parental figures. I think it's a dumb plot device

I call that a cop out. If that's the only way you can make your character mature and develop then you're not doing your job right. It's like when they make something horrible happen to a female character just so she can "develop".

Not to mention that killing Bobby so the boys mature and develop makes no sense because the boys are technically already developed. Killing him didn't make a difference in that department.

I completely agree. It bothers me when shows do this. I have seen it happen so many times on different things I have watched.

exactly Bringing Bobby would have made a lot more sense and it would have been easier.

I mean they get points for bringing him back for an episode here and there...but how about allowing him and Dean to have a scene together once in awhile...since he's been dead has he had a scene with Dean? I don't think so. Well there was that brief moment last season, but I hardly call that a 'scene' it was 2 seconds long and I doubt Jim and Jensen even shot that at the same time.
