Which I suppose makes a sad sort of sense. His mother died when he was so very young - he must have been terrified that if he wasn't good enough, his dad would leave, too. (When he got older, he would know intellectually that it wasn't his fault Mary died and left them, but emotionally? The way they were raised would mess with an adult, much less a child.) He had to help John, be the good son, and take care of Sammy.

that does make sense, and I think Dean really, really seeked his father's approval, that was important to him, so he would do what John asked of him

After losing Mary, the idea of losing anyone else in his family would have him terrified, and would seem all too possible. I imagine the only thing that could help him deal with that fear would be to act, to be the "good soldier" and do everything he could to keep another tragedy from happening.

And now Sam's faced with that same situation - the terrifying thought of losing his brother, the only family he has left and the most important person in the world to him.

Too true, both boys have dealt with death too close and too personal for most of their lives, so they're both willing to do anything, sacrifice everything to keep if from happening again.

When you think about it, the boys are each other's worlds. Sure, they care about Bobby deeply. And they have a few friends scattered around the country. But when you get down to it, the person who means most to them? Is each other. And neither can stand the thought of losing his brother.

I definitely agree. They only really have each other, sure, they have Bobby and other friends, but the most important person to them is each other

I agree. It's just way too coincidental that Dean just happens to get killed (again!) in a robbery the very morning after dying in all those Tuesdays. I'm sure it was still the Trickster setting things in motion (and Sam seemed to agree).

Not sure that would count as a full-hug. Might only be a semi-hug. Like when Dean thought Sam had been killed by Gordon, and they had an almost hug.

It was a full on hug!
Dean's cradling Sam's head right after he releases the cord and Sam seems to be holding on or at least totally leaning into it.
