Trip-Hop/Chillout Music Appreciation Thread

Welcome to the thread, trip-hop is my baby (well, along with Radiohead) and I've been wanting to create a thread for this for ages, only I suck and I haven't, until now anyway. I'm not sure if trip-hop and chillout can be mashed together but I kind of categorise them together under the umbrella of 'trip-hop' so if you have a problem with it just let me know and I'll revise the title/thread accordingly.

It's very hard to define what trip-hop is actually but this is a good explanation:

Quote:
This is by farthe most commonly asked question, and the most difficult to answer, but I will try my best to sum it up. Triphop is a blend of electronica and hip-hop, urban and ethereal, street and ambience. It is music that is thought provoking, sexy, sensual, and deep. Defining triphop is so difficult because the music is so amorphous, and it spreads across such a wide range of emotions and sounds. Some groups will have you nodding your head and tapping your feet while others will possibly lower your blood pressure (joke, sorta). Some triphop is narcotic - extremely mellow strings, a gentle brush beat on the drums, spacey bass lines echoing in the background with sullen female vocals at a whispers volume. Some triphop is loud - in your face with turntables burning themselves up, bass driven hip hop beats, thumping bass lines and rapping. A good deal of what is between these 2 examples would classify as triphop.
Basically if you have trip-hop songs then you'll know what I mean. It's very downtempo, very low-fi? It's also known as the Bristol Sound because a lot of these bands came from there, but later on not all of them were. And it's mostly in the 1990s, but again not always as well. (yes I know I'm being very helpful here...). And here are quotes because they kind of describe how I feel about trip-hop too (and I'm lazy to come up with my own definition, you see).

Quote:
"Triphop is smooth beats, moods, emotions... Engeneered music, not trance or techno though (yaaark..) It' wavy music, it takes you through those waves, i love it, its some kind of relaxing music that helps you think. I feel it like city music, night music, thoughful music."

"i think the simplest consensus could be its laid back&relaxing electronics/synths accompanied by a beautiful female (for the most part) voice. usually one might think some dark but w/ bands like Morcheeba...can be refreshing too ahhhhh."
Bands that are synonymous with trip-hop include Portishead (I'm still waiting for a new album, damnit!), Massive Attack (I don't like them - yes, I'm serious, and yes, I'm a fan of trip-hop still) and Tricky, although there's the newer ones like Morcheeba, Lamb, Goldfrapp, Thievery Corporation (which is more chillout IMO, which is why I included the 'chillout' portion in the title).

Anyway, here are two links that might prove to be useful:

World of Trip-Hop

If you know what I've been talking about, it'd be nice if you could join in the discussion (I have a feeling there won't be many people here, but prove me wrong? ) Have fun!

You must include Hooverphonic!

Portishead is my favorite trip-hop band by far, though.

Aww, finally someone who replied! Sorry I didn't reply earlier on, I was away. Bah, exams!

I didn't include them because I only know one song of theirs! 'Mad About You'. Do you know it?

Portishead are the best though. But they're an extremely acquired taste - my sister tried to give them a listen but she was telling me to switch off the CD player by the second song. And this is Dummy we're talking about, not even Portishead...

What's your favourite Portishead song though? I only know Dummy (and three songs from Portishead). I've really gotten into 'It Could Be Sweet' and 'It's A Fire' (it's... lighter, for them) and also 'Mysterons'. And then there's 'Roads' and 'Glory Box', of course. Actually, I like the album. Could you tell? I like 'All Mine', too.

I've been listening to 8mm lately and they're tagged on last.fm as trip-hop... what other good trip-hop bands should I listen to?

Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky are the main ones, but you could also try Morcheeba (I'm partial to their earlier records, when Skye Edwards was still their singer. 'Trigger Hippie' is great). I'm really partial to Portishead, though. Get Dummy, it's probably the definitive trip-hop album... ever.

A trip-hop thread? Sweet!

I like Massive Attack, Everything but the girl, Portishead and Morcheeba.

I like Dummy a lot. Especially It could be sweet, that song makes me elevate everytime I hear it.

Yeah, but nobody posts I don't know, I don't love Massive Attack that much... they're a bit weird for me. I do love 'Teardrop' though.

Dummy is awesome! It's so dark yet smooth. Just now I changed the channel to MTV and they were playing 'Glory Box'. I almost fell out of my chair. Couldn't believe they actually played that! It was great. I don't know what my favourite from Dummy is, it changes all the time.

Why don't you put as a thread title: Big boobs photos or something like that, so people enter here and start posting?

Glory Box is an amazing song, the first time I listened to it, I thought it was weird that the song starts the same way it ends. What I mean is that the volume increases slowly in the start and then in the end it decreases with the same pace. I thought that was cool. Don't tell me why, but I think it is.

And Teardrop is along with Protection the song of Massive Attack that I enjoy the most. The beat on teardrop is like a heartbeat. It's a very dark song but it's sweet at the same time too.

but then we wouldn't be attracting the right kind of people now would we?

Does it? Oddly enough I've never realised that. I'll have to listen to it again, I guess.

Have you head Jose Gonzalez's cover of 'Teardrop'? It's acoustic (as is his style) and it's... interesting. Slightly odd. But it's nice to see people covering different songs.

No, I haven't. I'll be sure to take a look at it though.

BTW, if you like trip-hop you should listen to Najwa Nimri. Especially the song Following Dolphins. She sings as if she had smoked pot all day.

Really? awesome, I'll check it out. Or better yet, do you have it? I'm very lazy.

What else do you recommend, then? Artistes, songs, anything.

I don't have Following Dolphins but I do have another great song from the same artist called Push It. I'm uploading it and sending you a PM with the link.

I'm more interested in indie rock, so I honestly don't listen to that many trip-hop bands but I'm a big fan of Moloko. I know that they made dance music too, but they have songs like Fun For Me, The Flipside or Indigo that are so so good.

Same here. If you haven't realised, I made this thread ages ago - when I was a bit more into trip hop. Moloko, though? I have 'Fun for Me' but that's it. Do you like Thievery Corporation?

I remember listening to The richest man in babylon on the radio some years ago, and liking it but for some reason I never downloaded it nor bought it. Which song do you recommend me?

Oh Jose I'm sorry I must've missed your post here. Um, I recommend 'Lebanese Blonde' (of course), and also 'The Mirror Conspiracy' and 'Shadows of Ourselves'. 'Indra' is good if you're just looking for music, no lyrics.

Anyway the point of bringing this thread up is to talk about Portishead! Since we keep talking about Portishead in the SR thread. I figured this thread needs love anyway, and then we could focus on SR in the SR thread.
