Sufjan Stevens #1: He's The Man Of Metropolis [Who] Steals Our Hearts

Welcome to the

Sufjan Stevens (born July 1, 1975) is an American singer-songwriter and musician from Petosky, Michigan. Sufjan's music is lyrically focused and instrumentally rich. Lyrically it often relates to faith and family. Stevens has enjoyed wide critical success in the United States.

He is considered part of the folk revival in indie pop, but his influences are very broad. His music has been likened to electronica and the minimalism of Steve Reich. Stevens originally announced plans to make a concept album for each of the 50 U.S. states, having begun the series with Michigan (2003) and Illinois (2005). The next states to be taken on in the project have been reported as Oregon and Rhode Island. Minnesota may be another candidate; in late 2005 and early 2006 Stevens played a new instrumental track titled "The Maple River." The Maple River mentioned in the title of the song runs through several counties in southern Minnesota.

Albums:
2000 A Sun Came
2001 Enjoy Your Rabbit
2003 Michigan
2004 Seven Swans
2005 Illinois
2006 The Avalanche
2006 Songs for Christmas

Hurrah! My favourite song titles are 'One last Woo-hoo for the Pullman' and ' They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From the Dead!! Ahhhhh!'

I just went to fetch my copy of Illinoise so I could listen to it and it seems to have gone walkabout thank goodness for my trusty iPod!

What's your favourite Sufjan tracks Gwen?

I'm off to go find some pics for the OP!

ETA:

I took the pics out now

Hurrah for pictures! I need a writeup and proper stuff like that first, though, before I add the pictures. All in good time, though.

It's hard for me to say because all his songs are so good! And that I only have Illinois and some songs from Michigan and one or two from The Avalanche and Seven Swans. But, off the top of my head:

'Casimir Pulaski Day' (first Sufjan song I heard, and I loved it)
'Chicago' (I am dying to hear the other versions on The Avalanche!)
'John Wayne Gacy, Jr' (it's so sad!)
Part 2 of 'Come Feel the Illinoise'
'Decatur, Or, Round Of Applause For Your Stepmother!'
'Dear Mr Supercomputer'
'Concerning The UFO Sightings Near Highland, Illinois'
'Jackson'
'The Man of Metrapolis Steals Our Hearts'
'The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out To Get Us!'
'For The Widowers in Paradise, For The Fatherless in Ypsi (something)'

Yeah, so that's about the whole of Come Feel The Illinoise, I know. I just love that album so damn much. I've been listening to nothing else since I downloaded it - even kicking In Rainbows out... shock, huh?

And speaking of IR, I'm prodding you to go post at the Radiohead thread...

I've got Illinoise, Michigan and Seven Swans but I think I listen to Illinoise the most. That's the first of his albums I got and I couldn't stop listening to it for a couple of months!

The new OP looks awesome! I love the write up

Funny, just as I came to the Music forum on FF I was listening to 'Decatur'. Okay, not so funny, seeing as I've listened to nothing but Sufjan Stevens for the most part of this week. It's really crazy. I'm so in love with Illinois it's not funny.

I love 'They Are Zombies!! They Are Neighbours!! They Have Come Back From The Dead! Ahhhh!!' as well. Seriously, I just love the whole album except maybe 'Prairie Fire That Wanders About' and maybe 'The Seer's Tower'.

Thanks! I stole it from Wikipedia, though, so it wasn't my writing. Also, is your icon from Pushing Daisies? I think it's cute. Your icon, I mean, not the show - I haven't watched a single episode of it yet. But I've seen my sister watch it.

Hey, guys!

I downloaded Illinois yesterday and already heard it! I really like it. But I still need to listen to it some more to form an actual opinion about its tracks

woah.. a thead for Sufjan Stevens.. Well done .

I know it's cliche to say that the song "Chicago" is my favorite song - but it really is, I have about 5 different versions of it.. It's just an amazing song..

I also really like 'Casimir Pulaski Day' - it's super pretty as is "He Woke Me up Again"

I have his albums - I just need to sit down and actually listen to them - instead of them being played when I have my Ipod on shuffle..-

My favorite Sufjan songs have to be "They are Night Zombies...", "John Wayne Gacy Jr.", "For the Widows in Paradise...", and "Flint".

yeah my icon is Pushing Daisies! The show is cute too, you should give it a go

I found my copy of Illinois!

My favourite Sufjan songs are 'Decatur' 'Come on feel the Illinoise' and 'Sister' but I'm always discovering love for other ones, depends what mood I'm in I guess!

There's a Snow Patrol song that has a line about Sufjan in it, talking about listening to 'Chicago'... but I can't remember which song it is

When I saw that I thought of you

I seriously need to get more Sufjan songs, I love his stuff. Stupid Michigan isn't downloading though and yes, Snow Patrol! I think it's 'Eyes Open' or something - the second song from Eyes Open, anyway.

I don't think it's cliched to say that your favourite is 'Chicago', Kon... I mean, it really is a great song. It was what made me rediscover Sufjan (I had heard 'Casimir Pulaski Day' and liked it, but never bothered to follow up with the other Sufjan songs). Are the alternatives on The Avalanche worth downloading?

That would be lovely, thank you

What's the title of the acoustic version of 'Chicago'? The part in brackets. I know he had a few versions.

Omg. A Sufjan thread. Yes, I'm in love with this man.

I have a lot of his songs at least twice on my computer, in acoustic and live versions. .

Favorite song ever is "Chicago," cause it's the epitome of Sufjan. Others I'll play over and over would be "Vito's Ordination Song" "Jacksonville" "Decatur" "John Wayne Gacy Jr." "Casimir Pulaski Day" "The Avalanche" and "All Good Naysayers Speak up! Or Forever Hold Your Peace!"

So, has a Soof song brought anyone else to tears? He paints such pictures, and with that voice, guh.
