The Source of Your Music

So, I was thinking about music (as you do) and I realised that a lot of the music that I own and a lot of my favourite songs, I originally heard as a soundtrack to a television show or a movie.

There's way more songs on my iPod and in my general collection that I've sourced from shows like BtVS, AtS, Roswell, Dawson's Creek, Veronica Mars etc and various movies, than I've downloaded after hearing them on the radio or through any other means. That may be because I have rather eclectic taste in music and the latest Idol output usually doesn't do it for me, but I really have found some of the best songs ever (yes, ever) as background music on Tv.

So I was just wondering, where does everyone else get their music from?

I also get alot of my music from TV shows and movies. Alot of the music used is really good.
My cousin also gives me a few band names and songs I listen to.
But mostly, I hear songs on TV shows and download them after that

I find my music when I am watching music videos. The other place that I find my music is when I go to the store and a CD with a interesting cover catches my eye but I have never heard of the band. I buy the CD (if I can) and find that the band is great or something like that happens.

I get my music from my sister, my friends, my cousin - people who love the same indie/underground music as I do.

TV shows are following the indie cult, but by time they play the songs I probably have already heard of it, so there's not much help there, plus I don't watch much TV either. It's good advertising for the bands featured though.

Spike v.s. Billy Idol, you are a brave soul I take ages to decide on buying a CD, and that's when I already know the music/band!

You're lucky. My friends and family generally have terrible taste in music, and because I live in Australia we are so behind on the whole music scene that unless the music is actually coming from an Australian band it takes months to actually get here. I would have missed out on so many good songs and bands if it wasn't for American TV shows. That said, we have a few decent bands over here, but mostly we're subjected to Human Nature and reject Idols.

Spike v.s. Billy Idol, I've done that before too. I also sometimes buy a cd if I decide I like the bands name. It's a fun way to discover new music.

I have a lot of music from TVshows and movies.
Sometimes I'm looking for songs that I heard in radio.
Sometimes friends tell me about some good bands.
I find many good band's names in internet (forums, profiles on LastFm...)

I honestly don't even pay attention half the time a TV show is playing music...unless I recognize the song. And if I hear a song I don't know on the radio, I'm likely to change it, unless I recognize the artist. So, basically, a lot of the music I like is either because I'm familiar with the artist and follow up on their music, or I listen to the same things as my friends or family. Always willing to listen to new songs/artists, though...give them a chance.

I get mine from TV shows too. They're always playing something I've never heard before and then i go and download a bunch from that artist.

But usually I go onto Blubster, the downloading program i use, and find a song i like, then it has other people who also downloaded that songs' playlists. And i search through their playlists. I always find a bunch of great new bands that way.

I usually find it through music threads on my message board or 'fandom' soundtracks people create.

That sucks. Try Pandora, though - it's a great way of discovering music (that goes for everyone else here too).

A lot of you have mentioned getting songs from TV shows - the Movies board was having a discussion about the lack of quality in movies these days, and how Hollywood is not reinventing itself the way TV is. Now every TV shows needs great music to even stake a claim of being hip, and I think it's great.

I found a lot of good music on Pandora! But usually I just try to keep myself updated on my favorite artists and their new stuff.
